Media multitasking involves using various technological devices at the same time - including texting, watching television or listening to music. Various studies have been conducted in order to establish whether or not “heavy media multitaskers” are more capable at filtering out unwanted and distracting stimuli, versus those who are “light media multitaskers”. It may be likely to think that those who are “heavy media multitaskers” are perhaps better able to filter out any unnecessary external stimuli, as they try to consolidate their attention on focusing on the relevant information in front of them. However, a study by Ophir, et al. (2009), disputes this theory. The students who participated in the study varied in terms of their media multitasking We strain our attention limits by trying to do more than one thing at a time. Not only are we susceptible to becoming distracted whilst dividing our attention, but our performance on given tasks is also impaired. It is believed that we multitask to receive some sort of adrenaline rush or to please our senses by giving them continually new experiences (Foehr, 2006). These impulsive traits were also identified in a study by Sanbonmatsu, Strayer, Medeiros-Ward, and Watson (Sanbonmatsu et al., as cited by Chen et al., 2016), as well as the challenging appeal and reward that multitasking has to offer. A media multitasking phenomenon has emerged in the last few years, whereby individuals attempt to engage in the dual task of driving and using a phone.
