It is evident that in society how the media is playing a major role in influencing the formation of gender stereotypes in the minds of children and adults. Effortlessly a person might come across a TV show or an article which is targeted toward a specific race and ethnicity by depicting stereotypes of others. While surfing the internet, I came across an article on a blog known as Elite Daily. Elite Daily is known as a sexist blog targeted towards young men. The site used gender stereotypes in order to put men on a pedestal. Many of their published articles are based on stereotypes such as men love sports and sex, while women love to sit home and clean. The article I am particularly referring to is called “Things Every 20-something needs to Realize” which was published early august 2013. This specific article is identical to many on articles on Elite Daily that is designed to exalt men and degrade women. The article was written in order to bring awareness to 20 year olds about how they should approach life. It was unfunny, judgmental and hateful. The article was so banal and misogynistic that its approval surprised many. The article had quotes such as “Ladies: your teeth are for chewing, and we don’t like to be chewed...........if you can get her into bed before date 3, then you’ll get bored with her by week 2” (p2). The article was clearly stereotypically developed by a male in order to influence the perception of the reader. While I was in search of a similar but different article to the latter I came across an article called “The Top 10 Things I (Apparently) Still Need To Remind Myself at 30 Years of Age” on a blog known as 20 something’s. 20 nothings is a feminine blog designed to uplift women by giving them daily advices to ...

...ause it could give children wrong stereotypical information, which could lead to development of a wrong idea about their culture and society later in their adulthood. These effects could be reduced by making strict laws that prevents hateful articles from publication, or at least a law that requires editors of blogs and magazine to carefully approve only accurate and appropriate information for the general public.

“The Proud Family” is a children’s program that runs daily on The Disney Channel and on Saturday mornings on ABC Kids. It is a TV-G rated program. The show is about an African-American family with the last name Proud. There is a mom, dad, three kids, and a grandmother. The main character of the show is the oldest daughter named Penny Proud who is probably in junior high. Also, some of Penny’s friends are in the show. All of the characters in this show are stereotyped by many things such as race and gender, including Penny.
The usage of media is huge in nowadays. People rely on different kinds of media to receive information in their everyday life because they are thirsty for the diverse and informative content. However, inaccurate portrayals of people from different races always appear in the media and audience will exaggerate those portrayals by their inflexible beliefs and expectations about the characteristics or behaviors of the portrayals’ cultural groups without considering individual variation (Ting-Toomey and Chung, 2012); in fact, it is also called as stereotypes. According to a study by the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University (Stein, 2012), racial stereotyping continues to occur in media and the mainstream media's coverage of different cultural groups is full of biased reporting, offensive terminology and old stereotypes of American society. It specifically emphasizes that majority of the stereotyped characters in media will only bring out the dark side of their cultural groups which many of them might not be true, especially for the portrayals of black community: African American.
When you think of American history, do you think of war, slavery, or segregation? Something that these have in common is gender equality. Gender equality is something that has been an issue in America since the first day it was inhabited. This is a problem in America. A more particular time period would be, World War II. During this time, women were being used to do men’s jobs and duties but, they still had to have a feminine aspect to them. These stereotypes result in controversial issues, which in turn, affect adults and children. The TV shows, internet, and social media are sources that expose children, as well as the adults, to stereotypes. Examples of those stereotypes are religion, sexism, and race. This essay discusses censorship and the way in which social media and consumer products affect and model an appropriate societal ‘literacy’ or view in particular regards to gender and race, to young children. For many years, racial and ethnic stereotypes have been portrayed on multiple television programs. These stereotypes are still illustrated on a day-to-day basis even though times have changed. Racial or ethnic stereotypes should not be perpetuated on certain television programs. These stereotypes provide false information about groups, do not account for every person, allow older generations to influence younger generations, create tension between groups, and affect people in many ways.
Stereotypes are a side of our everyday life. We tend to hear stereotypes every day and everywhere. On a daily basis people are exposed to some sort of misrepresentation of gender; in the things individuals watch, and often the things that are purchased. Women are often the main target of this misrepresentation. “Women still experience actual prejudice and discrimination in terms of unequal treatment, unequal pay, and unequal value in real life, then so too do these themes continue to occur in media portraits.”(Byerly, Carolyn, Ross 35) The media has become so perverted, in especially the way it represents women, that a females can be handled and controlled by men, the individual man may not personally feel this way, but that is how men are characterized in American media. Some may say it doesn’t matter because media isn’t real life, but people are influenced by everything around them, surroundings that are part of daily routine start to change an individual’s perspective.
Stereotypes In the Media Stereotypes play an important role in today's society and particularly in propaganda. According to the Webster's Dictionary, stereotyping is defined as a fixed conventional notion or conception of an individual or group of people, held by a number of people. Stereotypes can be basic or complex generalizations which people apply to individuals or groups based on their appearance, behaviour and beliefs. Stereotypes are found everywhere in the world. Though our world seems to be improving in many ways, it seems almost impossible to liberate it from stereotypes.
Stereotypes are communicated in such a way that “they are the language of ideology”. In terms of representing what real women and what real men are, the problem lies upon “whose reality it is, what reality and according to whom”. Paul Lester and Susan Ross have conducted a list of five reasons regarding why the media still uses stereotypes. Firstly, reporters do not take the time to view things differently or explore new issues. Secondly, advertisers require pictures that can be quickly and easily understood. Thirdly, those working in the media presume audiences will only accept certain images of a particular diverse group member. Fourthly, not enough people from diverse cultural groups working within the media industry. Last of all, culturalism, the belief that one cultural group is better or worse than another can control what is worthy of coverage. Though stereotypes in the media are often frowned upon, some forms of media still rely on it. Travis Linn has observed that comedies heavily rely on shared prejudices and stereotypes to sell it’s humour. Well, they do fail, but in a different way. In all the articles I encountered under the broadly titled ‘Women’ section, they featured a scantily clad woman and tended to give advice toward men. The photos featured in the women’s section had an emphasis on both the breasts and butt, further simplifying women down to just their body. Most headlines contained the word ‘sexy’ and referred to women as ‘babe’ or ‘our girl’, not only dehumanizing them but also pushing a sense of ownership. One particular article, written by a fellow woman, had the title Victoria’s Secret Model Throws First Pitch Like a Really Hot Girl which enforces everything that a feminist would despise. Clearly Corsillo, the article’s author, wrote the article with the intent for a male audience, even if she herself does not feel the same way. The few women that were actually interviewed included two WWE female twins who happen to be in relationships with famous wrestlers. Instead of interviewing them about their life stories, their questions centered on “tips on picking up women at the gym” or “what [their] stance [is] on working out with a significant other” (Rouse). Partnered with this article is a picture of the twins gazing at a male’s butt as he works out, enhancing heteronormativity but with a new twist. Another major factor that influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the television teach each sex how to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In the current television broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very small to adult audiences. In this broadcasting range, females are portrayed as motherly, passive and innocent, sex objects, or they are overlooked completely or seen as unimportant entities. Stereotyping women is not only rampant in the adult world; it also flourishes in the kiddie universe as well.
