How many women do you know have a problem with their body? Now, how many women do you know compare themselves to other women? Maybe they say, “I want to look like this or I wish I didn’t have this?” Now imagine if that person was your wife, your sister, your mother, or your daughter, do you think they should feel that way about themselves? No one should feel like they are less than or aren’t good enough. Unfortunately this is what the media promotes, causing women to develop self-perception issues. The cause being the media showing one visual that women attempt to conform to. I will first concentrate on the eating disorders and other unhealthy methods women use to conform to beauty standards. I will focus on how this affects women’s perception of themselves, the risks they put themselves at, and the lack of media coverage on the side effects of trying to be the beauty they promote. I will then pinpoint the need for media to eliminate body standards completely. The lack of a body standard to live up to will simply promote healthy living despite how women look. Part of the beauty standard set is not in control of the women because of different aspects. With promoting a simply healthier lifestyle will decrease the need to conform and increase all self-perception as beautiful. The American beauty standard of “thin being in” is primarily the focus of white women when fulfilling the standard. White women are exposed to beauty standards through the media and because white women follow the latest in popular culture, “U.S. trends in feminine beauty as they are impacted by art, magazines, fashion, and other external sources,” impact their self-perception. (Sekayi, 468) The media that continues to constantly circulate and reiterate women’s flaws that they want to change. As a result, white women turn to dangerous methods to conform to the standard. This causes white women to be “more dissatisfied with their weight and more likely to diet.” (Baugh et. al., 105) Along with diets, white women also are found to suffer from eating disorders.
