This past summer, Whole Foods Market was bought by Amazon for $13.7B in cash and many are wondering what a multi-billion dollar company like Amazon would want with a business such as Whole Foods (Petro 1). What makes this chain of grocery stores so special? As it turns out, Business Insider recently stated that the typical Whole Foods customer has over $1,000 per month in disposable income and the company has a strong private label business with its 365 brand (Petro 1). This is important to Amazon because it offers a different selection of products, as opposed to national brands that can be found at any retail store. This dynamic is something that Amazon has recently started to incorporate into their company in
order to appeal to a larger variety of customers (Petro 1). So what about this recent purchase has stuck with the public and inspired so much media attention? Many employees of this food market chain fear that in the coming years, Amazon will bring their increasingly popular “Amazon Go” into the store, eliminating all human cashiers (Aziza 1). While Amazon states that “There are no job reductions planned as a result of this deal”, many people wonder what the future may have in store for them and their jobs (Aziza 1). This purchase made by Amazon has stuck with me because my godmother works as the Customer Service Manager at the Whole Foods in Bedford, NH. Over this past summer, I have had many discussions with my godmother about her hopes and fears during this new transition, as well as hearing an inside opinion on this situation. While not only do I have a personal connection to this story, I also really enjoy the atmosphere of Whole Foods Market, as my family is a strong believer in eating as naturally and organically as we can. Hopefully as Whole Foods adjusts to this change, there will be nothing but good things in store for this company and their employees.

Is Amazon a bubble waiting to burst? The following discussions in this research paper will explore several key issues from its birth to its debatable future. Amazon is not a stranger to arguments revolving around questions of its longevity and success. When the systemic bubble of 1999 arrived Amazon’s corporate goal was to get big, to do it fast, and to establish a hold of new markets before any other competitor. During this time frame Amazon began branching out and selling anything and everything. With the burst of the internet bubble in 2000 and 2001, Amazon changed its goal from growth to aggressively making profits in all areas of their business. In 2001, Amazon’s founder and CEO stated in a Wall Street Journal article “We’ll ferociously manage the products we carry so that we sell only products that are profitable. The thirty-pound box of nails isn’t long for our world” (Elmer-DeWitt, 2001).

America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
