For this media assignment, I chose to create a DVD cover to an action film. Therefore, my target audience is teenage boys whose ages range from 13-18 because they take up a very high percentage of the demographics of people watching this genre of films. Since my target audience is high school boys, the main character in my movie, Bryan Radley, is 16 years old. My target audience, high school students, will be able to relate to the problems Bryan faces at school and the emotions he feels towards his teachers, his peers and his crush named Avery. By making my movie relatable by my target audience it appeals more towards them and helps them engage with this movie. I focused my formal elements of my DVD cover to appeal towards boys because although there are also girls who enjoy action movies, there are more boys than girls who watch action movies, so by making the DVD cover to appeal to boys, I get more people to watch my movie than if I directed it towards girls. The main purpose of my media creation is to persuade, and then entertain, and then inform. In the following paragraphs I will be explaining my reasoning to why I have chosen to put my purposes in this order. The main purpose I created this DVD cover is to persuade my target audience and others to watch my film. There is no reason to create a film and spend millions of dollars if no one is going to watch it. Producers create films hoping to receive a profit from how many people watch it. Therefore, it is crucial to the producer of the movie to make sure people watch the movie. They do this by persuading the audience to watch their film. I believe that the main reason to create this DVD cover is to persuade so I made this purpose more dominant then the others. Boys like to look at cool pictures and they enjoy doing it. Putting cool photos on the DVD cover makes them feel like when they watch this movie, they will be entertained by the intense scenes of stuff blowing up. On real DVD covers, nothing happens as a coincidence. Everything is carefully planned out and placed in specific places to entice the consumer to purchase the film. Therefore, while creating my DVD cover I continually thought of my target audience and the placement of each element to ensure that the film will be tempting to buy. As a last step to determine whether my DVD cover would be liked by my intended audience, I asked my brother if he wanted to watch this film pretending that it is an actual movie. He said yes!

In this project, we were told to analyze two pieces of pop culture and report back the ratio of men versus women, racial minorities versus whites, homosexual couples versus heterosexual couples, adults over 40 versus adults 18-40, and the number of whole women versus the number of parts of women’s bodies. The pieces of media that I chose to analyze were The Goldbergs and Modern Family. I believe that the target audience for The Goldbergs is people who grew up in the 1980s because this show is supposed to be set during that time and references many things that those people could relate to. In addition to this, they tend to feature older people as the main characters in order to draw in their obvious target audience. It seems as though the target audience for Modern Family is young adults to adults. They feature more minorities and things that the young generation tend to relate to more. Both of the target audiences are made quite clear if you really pay attention to the programs.

Going to the movies is an experience that everyone can enjoy, and while most people have an idea of what genre of movie they are partial to, there are some movies that will appeal to almost any crowd. I recently took my two nieces, ages ten and thirteen, to see the 2014 musical Into the Woods, and in the audience there was a large group of teenagers, a couple families that had brought their preteen and teenage children, and even some adults that had gone to see it for their own enjoyment. There are numerous aspects of a movie that can catch a person’s attention, and the film producers of Into the Woods knew exactly how to draw in the desired crowd. In order to do this, the filmmakers used both ethos and pathos to appeal to their intended preteen, teenage, and adult audiences.
In his essay, “It’s Just a Movie: A Teaching Essay for Introductory Media Classes”, Greg M. Smith argues that analyzing a film does not ruin, but enhances a movie-viewing experience; he supports his argument with supporting evidence. He addresses the careful planning required for movies. Messages are not meant to be telegrams. Audiences read into movies to understand basic plotlines. Viewers should examine works rather than society’s explanations. As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.

The media has changed significantly over the past decades. Technology has modified our abilities to expand our communication network, and it allows companies to spread their commercials over many different continents. Research done by Roberts (1993) shows that adolescent and children are often very influenced by media that involves sexual or violent conduct.
