Recommended: Why we should volunteer
Every year my employer office volunteer services to several organizations such as Meals on Wheels in which is the site that I decided to volunteer at. Several of my co-workers and I, volunteered our services in helping to package and deliver meals for senior citizens. Meals on wheels association of America was founded by CEO Ellie Hollanderer, is the oldest and largest national organization that supports more than 5,000 community-based senior nutrition programs across the country. My experience as a volunteer at Meals on wheels was very enjoyable and will be remember able because, I was able to prepare hot healthy meals for senior citizens. Everybody either have or will have aging parents including myself. I hope that my experience
will also help me to better understand the needs of senior citizens so that I could continue to volunteer when I can in helping them receive adequate services.
This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.”
...e school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc… For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer in the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me. The party was a huge success and a lot of fun. I look forward to organizing more volunteer opportunities for my friends and I.
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
Just a month ago, one of Greer, South Carolina's most devoted community members, Mrs. Alice Bernette, passed away. Mrs. Bernette, or Mimi as her close friends and family called her, was a passionate shcool teacher for 15 years at Crestview Elementary School, a committed volunteer for Meals On Wheels,
In our learning through service class, our group project was to help a local food bank at Milford. The group was divided up depending on the amount of assistance that other people at the food bank need. I observed many things at the food bank which corresponds with the film “A Place at the Table”. In the film, I noticed that social programs or charities volunteers are rather lacking, there were not a lot of volunteers. At the food bank, there were quite a handful, but not enough to keep with the influx of work the food bank needs to finish for the day. I know that working at the food bank is quite gloom and happy, the prior knowledge I use to choose the community address that I think should be addressed the most is based on the coverage of
From the various things I did to fulfill my required service hours, the most meaningful service I completed was through a program called Buddy Baseball. The Rockford park district in the summer organizes this program for the disabled children in the area so that they are able to participate in a sport. The park district runs this program to try and help the disabled children feel as though they have a more typical childhood. The kids have the opportunity to experience being on a team and playing with their friends without the aid of their parents, which the kids seldom get to experience. Because of this, I believe that this service best exemplifies the theme of the option for the poor and vulnerable.
Another service that I have done has been to volunteer at the West Campus Hospital gift shop. It was a great experience for me; if I had the time I would make the effort to volunteer again. For people that is good at socializing with others and love organizing I would recommend volunteering at the gift shop.
Meals on Wheels follows a food service system which involves: purchasing food ingredients to the production facility, preparing the recipes, making the recipes, storing of chilled and frozen products, and then sending the meals out to be delivered. This means that the planning process is one of the most crucial steps when obtaining materials. The production planning team is responsible for estimating demands, as they are constantly viewing how many clients need what food, during which days (Forster, 2016). The production team is in constant communication with the chefs and dietitians to determine the exact amount of materials coming in (Forster, 2016). Usually, the production team is responsible for orders of 2 sets of
Up until a few years ago I never thought that one of my grandparents would be in a nursing home. I had always been lucky to have them healthy. However, this changed about a year ago when my grandfather had a mini-stroke, which caused him to require extra care my grandmother could not provide. Watching my family deal with my grandfather made me aware of the care and services the elderly need and has made me realize how important it is to volunteer at a local nursing home.
Being involved in many community organizations, I have assisted people from all walks of life.. For example, one week I volunteered at a senior bingo night at a retirement home facility, and the next week, I wrote letters to our troops. The National Honor Society has also given me the opportunity to give back to my own school. Last year, our organization did a gardening project in my school's courtyard revitalizing the landscape
The site I volunteered at was Cradles to Crayons in Boston, MA. This group provides children up to age 12 that are living in low income and homeless situations, with essential items they may not be able obtain otherwise. This includes clothes, shoes, school supplies, toys, books, and more. This helps these children at home, in school, and at play. Their overall mission since being founded in 2002 is to give children in need the most important basics of life. Their approach revolves around the idea of people helping other people. Better off communities are paired up with poor communities and those who have spare items donate them, and they are given to those in need.
The reason I chose to work on senior citizen issue, because my grandmother is living by herself on social security benefit. While I was talking with her, I found she doesn’t need only money to live, but she needs help on house keeping issues like maintenance, and especially a need of someone who visits her once a while. If my grandmother felt this way, I guess there are many seniors in Atlanta, who might share the same feelings. There are many organizations currently active in and around metro Atlanta to look after seniors, but success is a little. There is a constant need of volunteers who dedicate their time and efforts in helping seniors, doing maintenance work, and delivering foods on festivals like Thanksgiving and Christmas as we...
want to go the extra mile and help out the people in need. Visiting the food
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
