MEALS ON WHEELS: SAFE AND RELIABLE SERVICE FOR THE ELDERS

The concept of Meals on Wheels is most generally a paid programme for the elderly that are unable to hire cooks or are not able to cook for themselves. The programme offers to deliver cooked meals to their doorstep which will need to be warmed up or on occasion just needs to be defrosted.

• It started with the Women’s Volunteer Service for Civil Defence that provided food to people who had lost their homes during the wars or lost their basic civil amenities during natural calamities such as a hurricane or a storm.
• Often times these meals will be specialized according to the need of the elderly, and will be made according to the health restraints that may be imposed on the diet.

Australia: Australia is amongst one of the largest countries to offer these programmes exclusively and the country have well over 20 programmes running in each state, that offer these programmes. Many programmes also include volunteers to stay with the elderly until they have finished the meal.

United Kingdom: United Kingdom being the country of origin for the initiative or the programme blueprint, had the first service of Meals on Wheels carried out successfully during the IInd Wold War.
