Mcdonalds' Golden Arches
When fast food comes to mind, one fast food mammoth comes to mind: McDonald's. The imperial fast food giant can be linked visually to several images, but namely its trademark golden arches. Other visual images, primarily for advertisement purposes, are also stamped into the minds of Americans associating the idea of burgers and fries with the ubiquitous franchise.
However, the image displayed in the Time Magazine's September 30th 2002 issue, is an image that is hard to decipher and, most importantly, is an image that is hardly a likeness to the icons imprinted in the minds of fast food lovers across the nation. The catchy illustration invades an article tentatively titled, "Can McDonald's Shape Up?" The cartoon portrays an obscenely rotund Ronald McDonald pacing stressfully on a treadmill. The editorial cartoon is not for everyone to understand, yet it still seems to be generally humorous in its own context. At first glance, the cartoon seemingly pokes fun at the growing obesity in America. This observation is perhaps due to the rewarding conveniences of fast food.
Unfortunately, the observation is in error because the graphic is located in the Business section of Time Magazine, not the Health section. After reviewing the visual meticulously, the drawing proves to represent an issue that is not quite as literal as it may seem. The obviously struggling Ronald McDonald depicted in the cartoon is making an honest attempt to lose his weight, but he seems to have no real chance. It seems the harm is done for McDonald's; and regardless of its efforts, McDonald's can not catch up to its growing competition.

While different aspects can be observed from the editorial cartoon, one thing is clear, McDonald's has no chance. As the metaphorical "McDonald's" fights to regain its former glory, it is ultimately left running in circles with no chance of making it to the finish line. The message is apparent in the cartoon. Ronald McDonald, tired, worn out, and fat will inevitably end up in the same slump he started from. The perspective is conveyed plainly with the use of several visual metaphors and presentation. McDonald's seems to be losing the game it started itself.

The United States of America has long been considered a “big nation”, whether is has the biggest cities, houses, and on a negative note, biggest people. In 2003, Morgan Spurlock, a healthy-bodied film director, set on a quest to show America the detrimental effects of the fast food industry and raise awareness on the controversial issue. He produced the documentary “Supersize Me”, where McDonald’s meals were consumed for every meal of the day for thirty days. His film was released to movie theatres so that people could understand the devastating effects of McDonald’s on his body in a very short time span. At the end of his experiment, Morgan gained twenty-five pounds, developed a thirteen percent body mass increase, cholesterol skyrocketed immensely, and fat accumulation in his liver rose to. He became depressed and he only felt happy and in no pain when he was eating the fast food. By using ethos, logos, and pathos, “Supersize Me” became one of the most watched documentaries in the United States. Without these appeals, this documentary would not have developed the effect that it did.
Debate continues to who should be credited with inventing the telephone. In 2002, even the US Congress succumbed to the truth and “changed its mind” on the issue gave credit to the real inventor and rewrote history that the original telephone was in fact invented by Antonio Meucci. Bell was a cunning opportunist who took all the credit for a more brilliant scientist’s work. The House of Representatives voted to recognize telecommunications genius Antonio Meucci as the father of modern communications. Credit usually goes to the person with the patent and in the history books Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor of the telephone after Bell was awarded US Patent Number 174,465, Improvement on Telegraphy, on March 7, 1876.
In a society that is facing numerous problems, such as economic devastation, one major problem is often disregarded, growing obesity. As the American society keeps growing, so does growth of the fast food industry and the epidemic of obesity. In order to further investigate the main cause of obesity, Morgan Spurlock, the film director and main character, decides to criticize the fast food industry for its connection with obesity in America. In his documentary Spurlock performs a radical experiment that drives him to eat only from McDonald's and order a super-sized meal whenever he is asked. By including visual and textual techniques, rhetorical appeals, and argumentative evidences, Morgan Spurlock was able to help viewers know the risks of fast food and how it has caused America to be the world's “fattest country”.
A father can play many roles throughout a child’s life: a caregiver, friend, supporter, coach, protector, provider, companion, and so much more. In many situations, a father takes part in a very active position when it comes to being a positive role model who contributes to the overall well-being of the child. Such is the case for the father in the poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden. In this poem, readers are shown the discreet ways in which a father can love his child. On the other hand, there are also many unfortunate situations where the fathers of children are absent, or fail to treat the children with the love and respect that they undoubtedly deserve. In the contrasting poem “Like Riding a Bicycle” by George Bilgere, readers are shown how a son who was mistreated by his drunken father is affected by their past relationship many years later. Although both of these poems have fairly similar themes and literary techniques, they each focus on contradicting situations based on the various roles a father can play in a child’s life.

Alexander Graham Bell is the man most remembered for creating the telephone. Other than that he is a man who always had an obsession for communication. Buchholz emphasizes the before blaming fast food outlets and their products for the increase in obesity rates; one should make sure that their claims are valid. The primary cause of the increase in the obesity levels in the United States should solely be blamed on the change in the lifestyle of the citizens. Fast food outlets have been in existence since the twentieth century, and the levels of obesity have been on the increase in the twenty-first century compared to the twentieth century. While facing many setbacks and failed experiments over the two years, they still managed to successfully transmit human speech simultaneously on one wire. With great triumph with the telephone, Bell began to showcase his invention across Massachusetts and conventions, colleges, and meetings. I knew McDonalds was more harmful to than other fast food places, but I never knew about the lawsuit between McDonalds and it consumers. People around the globe have become accustomed to the high gleaming golden arches that make up the famous emblem for McDonald’s. McDonald’s has grasped the concept that culture flows from power. In this case, the American culture flows through the veins of this fast-food giant and the more that is supplied, the greater the demand. It is no secret that McDonald’s has become one of the world’s largest fast-food retailers. It has become a well known icon that has played a huge part in globalization, with chains located in many different countries… transforming the meaning of fast-food all around the world.
