In 1620, one hundred and two Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower, hoping that they would make a new start in America. The Pilgrims came from England, and after many days of searching, they found the Cape Cod Harbor. Once they found an area with the necessities of living, they settled and named it Plymouth Colony. While on the Mayflower, the Mayflower Compact was written and signed by the men on board. This document provided structure for self-government, and it was the origin for American politics today. U.S. History began with the Mayflower Compact because it is the foundation of how America is governed throughout its history.
The way in which a country is governed is one of the most important ways of how a nation is defined and where its history
begins. America is defined as a democracy, which the Mayflower Compact initially started. The purpose of the the document was to keep order and establish a civil society in the Pilgrim villages. The Mayflower Compact states: “...do by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God and of one another, Covenant and Combine ourselves together in a Civil Body Politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute and frame such just equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Offices from time to time...” (Mayflower Compact, 1620). The Mayflower Compact helped unite the Pilgrims by giving them a political voice and allowing the people to make decisions (Reference). This made the people satisfied and comfortable with the way everything was running, so the ideology carried into the 21st century, as we still have a democracy today. Although there were many settlers before the Mayflower arrived to America, the Pilgrims were the one who really contributed, made an impact, and helped shape the government that we have today. In conclusion, the Mayflower Compact was the start of U.S. History because it was the backbone of the laws and government in America. It allowed for a civilized society, where everyone’s voices are heard and opinions are taken into account. When the Pilgrims were on the Mayflower, they were very separated by religion and despised the other culture. However, the Mayflower Compact united the Pilgrims and gave them a connection to bond over. Also, without the Mayflower Compact, the American government today could have a different structure, and might not even be a democracy. Therefore, the Mayflower Compact was the key document that defined the United States and its history.

American history is so much more interesting now than it was when I was growing up! I have just finished reading Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick. First of all, I was surprised to see a book on this summers New York Times Best Seller List about a subject so long ago. I would have thought the story about the Pilgrims had been told enough times no one would bother writing another book. Philbrick has written an enlightening account of the 17th century events that shaped our country. It was a story that is well written and enjoyable to read.
Although the English were not the first Europeans to explore or colonize North America, their settlements along the Eastern seaboard became the thirteen colonies that later formed the United States. England relied on private trading companies to establish a presence in North America. Two of these groups, the Virginia Company was the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. “ The Jamestown colony was modeled after a military expedition, transplanting about 100 hardy Englishmen into the Virginia…”(Smith 3). And the voyage of the Mayflower, bringing people to Plymouth, Massachusetts.” ...1620-1647 describes this journey and provides a glimpse of the settler's life in what became New England.” (Bradford 5). The Mayflower Compact, signed by some of the earliest settlers of Virginia including John Carter in 1620 was an example of early self-governance in that they established a “frame such just and equall laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices..for the generall good of the Colonie.” They had left Great Britain with the intention to care for themselves and govern themselves. The Mayflower Compact is one of the earliest examples of people coming together to govern themselves and take control of their future and well-being as a colony without Great Britain. Many others followed suit after them in a manner very similar.4
To govern is to control, influence, or regulate. The very basis of our country and state’s
While on the Mayflower, the settlers came to the realization that there would be no civil authority on the new land for them to follow. Resulting from that realization was the Mayflower Compact, it was designed to be their rule and guide to life on the new land. This was the first American State Paper; it provides the original statement of the principles of American democracy as we now know it. In addition it was the first self-government within the colonies and it regarded people as the source of power. The Mayflower Compact expresses four major ideas, a deep faith in God and his guidance, a deep loyalty to England and the king, a mutual regard for one another as equals, and the intent to establish equal laws to all men. It was the birth of constitutional liberty and became the official constitution of Plymouth Colony until Plymouth merged i...

The Mayflower Compact was signed on November 11, 1620 on board the vessel Mayflower. The Mayflower Compact was signed by forty-one men on board the ship. The main person responsible for this was William Bradford. He said the reason for writing this is he was afraid of mutiny, and another reason was he thought they needed a form of self-government. This document was the first colonial agreement that formed a government by consent of the governed. The compact gave the settlers a plan to frame and enact laws for the general good of the organized settlement.
“Of Plymouth Plantation” was written by William Bradford during the journey of the pilgrims to America. The pilgrims left willingly to escape religious persecution from the Church of Britain. Once they reached land, they were so overjoyed with the fact that their voyage was success that they kissed the land once they arrived. Yet, the pilgrims were also frightened by the Natives, who were already on the land, due to their stature and intimidation. A defense system was built to protect themselves from the Natives but once they were proved to not be dangerous, the Natives and pilgrims worked together through the tough and long winter to survive. Out of this friendship was created “Thanksgiving” when the pilgrims and natives came together for a feast
