Mayella Ewell Mayella Ewell is one of the many misunderstood character we've been introduced to. While reading To Kill A Mockingbird, Mayella's personality stood out to me. Her diverse personality intrigued me from the start. The soul of my shoe contains that stand as an analogy for mayella. I used egg shells to represent her relationship with her father. Mayella's father, Bob Ewell, is an abusive alcoholic. Jesses implied when Atticus Finch stated, “ ..when a man spends his relief checks on green whiskey, his children have a way of crying from hunger”. With an alcoholic as a father, Mayella is constantly having to do and say things with caution, as if she's walking on eggshells. The eggshells are broken in order to show she has before not acted with caution, which led to harsh consequences. The rock placed on the soul was to represent the amount of uncomfort she feels. Mayella is constantly having to deal with her portrayal as the town trash. And when she isn't dealing with that, she is caring for her younger siblings. The cheap material that is layered on the outer show represents her “cheap trash like” reputation. We were introduced to this theory when Atticus tells Scout “The Ewells have been a disgrace to maycomb for three generations”. On top of the material there are two bandages. These represent the damage that has been done to her. I chose to place these on the outside rather than the inside, to reveal that she's had a crowd throughout all her tragedies.
