Maychel Harris, a one-time struggling student who rose through the ranks from building services worker to administrator, brings a unique perspective to Sherwood as its new assistant principal. Harris most recently worked as an administrator for 10 years at Springbrook and is replacing Sandi Williams, who left Sherwood to become an assistant principal at Wheaton.
Harris grew up in Northwest Washington DC, attending public schools. At the age of 18, he went to work at [Paint Branch?] in building services to obtain dental insurance [and to help pay his way through college?]. This began his career working for MCPS, and this school year marks his 33rd in the school system.
Harris attended Johns Hopkins University to earn a criminal justice degree while continuing to work in the school system. It was while working as a member of a school’s security team that he realized he’d rather work with students than criminals. “I spent my day watching kids and watching the dynamics in schools,” said Harris. “I saw the value of teaching and that the right teacher and the right approach can determine whether or not the kids were engaged and if they got benefit out of the instruction.”

In the interview, I asked her what kind of relationship does she have with her students and she said that she puts them at the same level as here because she doesn’t like the idea one person being superior to someone else. She used a supporting leadership style by allowing her students to feel free to think outside of the box without any judgment while still knowing that she will be there to help if they need it. She also said that she adapts her leadership style depending on the student she is working with. She understands that some people need more help than others and ensures her students that she does not play favorites with any students. Trevino is a very team oriented leader and embraces problem solving skills in her teaching methods. She shows traits of the Transformational Leader by always reassuring her Student Leadership Team that she is not her for the paycheck. Instead, she is here to make sure that every student is prepared for life after high school. Whenever she talks to her students, you can tell that she is passionate and truly cares about each and every one of their personal well beings inside and outside of school.

Experience and formed opinions are the end results of these journeys; assumptions are either reinforced or shattered, but either way the truth is a little bit closer than before. Across America, young people are being short changed due to a broken education system. Bliss is just one example of the shared frustration felt by students. In an interview, Jeff said one of his key points is the fact that it's not just about his education, it's about our education. "If we embrace this, I feel as if we can make a serious change and a positive change. But if we just want to ignore and push this to the side then I expect to see the same problems again and again." Though he was not punished for his actions by the district, Bliss reveals that after dropping out of school and returning the next year, he takes his education very seriously and expects his teachers to do the same (Collins). “You got to take this job serious, this is the future of this nation… this is my country’s future and my education,” said Jeff. A video of the outburst, taken by another student, has since gone viral on various social media outlets causing a buzz throughout the educational system. Bliss expressed his own opinion about the changes he wants to see implemented by saying, “I want to see a teacher stand up and interact with the students, get involved, discuss, talk, question and dig deep into the subject,” in the interview (Klein).

In conclusion, I believe that I can offer a wealth of expertise and experience in contributing towards the continued development of a cohesive, dynamic and collaborative school that focuses on offering outstanding world class learning opportunities for all. A controversial issue in the criminal justice field is whether or not educational programs should be offered to inmates in jail while they are incarcerated. While some might argue that taxpayers should not be forced to fund these types of programs, others agree that it is extremely beneficial to not only the inmates but also the taxpayers. Not only are the inmates the people in society who need education the most, but studies have shown a significant decrease in the recidivism rate of inmates who participated in educational programs while incarcerated. Jails and prisons should increase educational programs to inmates because inmates need education more than ever, it is more financially efficient to provide educational programs and it significantly reduces the recidivism rate.
It is my belief that anyone with a desire to change the world would be fortunate to work in education. By sharing my vision with others, and building upon my skills while seeking constant growth, I strive to take an approach to leadership that fosters an effective, nurturing educational environment for the entire school community. By creating this type of environment, as well as through embracing and enhancing my leadership strengths, it is my goal to contribute to society by inspiring people to become better not only as teachers and students, but as compassionate human beings.
I want you to all work together and think about new ways to be proactive and continue to grow your CTE program, so that we'll help students connect with the programs and the jobs they need to realize their dreams. I want you to help our students see which jobs are in high demand in their communities and be able to obtain a foothold in them. I want you to help them see which programs give them the skills and education that they need to achieve their dreams. I also want you to help them understand what their imminent earning power might be in that given field. When parents and students see a job title and a salary, they can understand the purpose and benefit of it all. I hope you all take up the challenge and see what we can come up with. As newly elected board members, you all have the ability to do everything possible to help fill these young people’s insurmountable potential, whether that's making it easier for them to find and follow career pathways or whether it's doing everything possible to work with the great businesses of this community to by insuring that all of your programs are properly funded and never placed on the budgets chopping
Teachers and leaders work and communicate together to initiate changes that’s needed to build new ways of learning, sharing and accessing knowledge, then putting it to work in the lives of all students. At my school we have learned education, science, technology and hardworking devoted staff members are the key to preparing our students for a great global education and future.
