The Islam religion has many different sects and provides for a diverse group of people and their viewpoints. In the article “Crisis of Faith” the author, Hasan Suroor, uses research and personal accounts to depict a major divide which is inspiring both converts and apostates in the Muslim community. Suroor writes about how the religion of Islam is losing its more moderate followers while attracting more and more extremists while Islam is a “growing religion with 1.6 billion followers across the world.”(Suroor) Unfortunately while the number of these moral followers of Islam decrease, the undesired population of the radical Islamists increases within the community. The loss of the moderate educated Muslims from the religion is due to a number of reasons. The primary causes being the inability to reconcile the opposing ways the Quran is being interpreted and everything from “religious bigotry to oppression of violence in the name of Islam.”(Suroor) …show more content…

Most every religion is focused on bringing good into the world and praising one or multiple gods. Islam is all about being a good person. However, Suroor believes there is currently a disconnect between these peaceful teachings and the violence that is being practiced based on different interpretations of those same readings. He goes on to emphasize that the focal point of this whole issue is the refusal of clarification of the texts. Those who are recognizing this trend have two options: stay in and be a part of a community that is not focusing on bringing goodness into the world; or leave their religion and constantly live in fear of the consequences of apostasy from Islam.
