One small act can change a person’s life forever. This should have a big effect on you because one kind act can change the attitude of a person in an instant. This effect could be good or it could be bad depending on your attitude towards them. If you do a good deed you will have the good and I like that person vibe and you could have them go from suicidal to making them feel like they are important and worth something in life. Or you could be a jerk about it and change their attitude and look on life forever into being rebellious and mean. Flannery O’Connor wrote the story The Life you save may be your Own the fate of the characters Mr. Shiflet saved his own life by leaving Lucynell in the diner; Mrs. Crater saved her own life by setting up Lucynell and Mr. Shiflet, and the title means you don’t always have to do the best thing for other people some time’s you do it for yourself. Flannery O’Connor wrote the story The Life you save may be your Own and one of the characters Mr. Shiflet saved his own life by leaving Lucynell in the diner and left her there. This seems like it is contradictory and it is because he left this girl in a diner by herself and she couldn’t talk to have anyone tell her where he went. Mr. Shiflet saved himself because he wasn’t happy with her he was pressured into getting married by Mrs. Crater and he did it so he could have the car. This was an act of saving himself because he could have stayed with her and been unhappy for the rest of his life or he could have left and be a happy guy who didn’t have a care in the world. “He became depressed in spite of the car… Give it to her when she wakes up I’ll pay for it now… I can’t wait. I got to make it to Tuscaloosa.” On one side this was a bad thing to do becau... ... middle of paper ... ...nnor wrote the story The Life you save may be your Own the fate of the characters Mr. Shiflet saved his own life by leaving Lucynell in the diner; Mrs. Crater saved her own life by setting up Lucynell and Mr. Shiflet, and the title means you don’t always have to do the best thing for other people some time’s you do it for yourself. I know that in my essay it looks like the only thing this story is about is trying to get rid this girl because no one wants her, but I’m pretty sure that there is more to the story than that. This is a really influential quote for the title, but I feel as though the story could have been a little bit stronger when it comes to the details. There wasn’t really much that happened in the story until the very end. This quote really makes you think about saving lives and what you are doing for yourself and what you are doing for other people.
With this quote, Mama is considered the protagonist, given that the story revolves around the insurance check that she is getting and the concern about what she is going to do with that money. Containing some type of meaning about life, this quote represents the importance of going about life day by day and not living based upon material things, and in this case, money. I find myself
The theme of this novel is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death. The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to, even right up to the end."
So, over all, this helps you get a better understanding that ethical dilemmas happen for all people, in all walks of life, in many different situations. It shows us we must pay attention to our actions and the actions of others around us. As long as we follow the rules, and ask for a little direction when we don’t know what to do, we will all be better off in our careers as helpers.
...o everyday use, such as Mama and Maggie have rightly done. Both of these short stories express the importance of standing up for what is right, regardless that one’s action may go unnoticed or that one may be faced with the difficult decision of choosing one daughter over the other. A person’s integrity and character develops every time a person stands up for what he or she believes in. Standing up for what is right is a good deed, and people should always stand firm for what is right because despite the possible losses, there is much more to be gained. .
In conclusion, the characters NightJohn and Sarny in the book NightJohn by Gary Paulsen demonstrate that it is important to put others’ needs before your own. Both NightJohn and Sarny put themselves in dangerous situations, but by doing this they were able to benefit others. By living our lives putting others’ needs before our own we can become selfless and more understanding people and affect the world around us for the
In the text “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” by Flannery O’Connor, a common mood emerges from the somewhat humorous yet unfortunate work. A mood of grotesqueness among the characters and overall story as it presents itself, generally, making the audience feel quite uneasy and uncomfortable while reading it. Grotesque is a literary style, which comically and somewhat repulsively represents a distorted character or a series of twisted actions or thoughts that embody a character. The text creates a grotesque mood simply because the actions carried out by the characters resemble an extreme sense of despair and uneasiness, yet the way in which it is executed is somewhat funny and jocular to the reader, therefore creating an awkward overall mood
In “Hills Like White Elephants”, the girl doubts between two decisions: keeps the baby and break up with the guys or gets an abortion and continues with the guys. This situation seems very familiar to this society, where people dates for fun not for marriage. In “The Story of an Hour”, the woman grieves about the death of her husband, however, at the same time, she realizes the freedom that she will have for the rest of her life. Unfortunately, she only enjoys the freedom that she has from the death of her husband for an
The plot of this story revolves around a decision that two characters, Lane Dean Jr. and Sheri, are forced to make. Lane and Sheri are both Christians who are not an official couple, but clearly haves feeling for each other, sitting in a park bench analyzing the choices they must make. Sheri “ was serious in her faith and values” (Wallace 217) and already has a stereotype towards her on how she must be a good person. Sheri and Lane although not a couple or married, become pregnant. With Sheri being very smart and serious about school abortion is the decision she is leaning towards with an appointment already set. As Lane and Sheri sit at the “ picnic table at the park by the lake”...
There are countless people who aspire to help people in their lives. However, if you think about it, nearly every career helps others in some way, shape, or form. Teachers, scientists, policemen and various other careers aid people in different ways. I, like many others, have always known that I’ve wanted to help people. Yet, I also want to do more than that. I want to help others, but also save others- emotionally or physically, mentor others, inspire others, and be there for others during their most vulnerable times. This is who I am- and I have always been this person. In first grade, I ran a lemonade stand at my school for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; I got my third grade class to raise money for starving children; and I put up with bullying throughout middle school because I befriended a girl who had trouble making friends on her own. The quality of pure selflessness and care for others that I have always possessed would allow me to do something great with my life- it just took me some time to figure out what.
In my mind this particular short story has a very interesting meaning behind it. This meaning is one that many younger people such as myself would benefit most from. I think that the whole point of the story is that you shouldn't just rush along and always be in such a hurry.
You can tell a lot about a story by its title. Some might say that this is judging a book by its cover, however a title is basically an overview of the entire story, summarized in less than ten words. Flannery O’Connor’s (1925-1964) story, The Life you save May be Your Own, has a gargantuan title. From this title, you can infer that the ending of this story is a life changing one. This story has a very grotesque theme. However, it takes place in a very well light area, which shows a lot of contrast to the dark theme. In this story, its starts off with a man who has had an exciting past meet with a family who has most certainly not. He seems nice, but throughout the story, the characters show their true colors. By the end, the story takes a sharp turn from blissful to outrageous. There are three reasons why the title of Flannery O’ Connor’s story, The Life You Save May be Your Own, relates so well to the text.
mid-1900s before she passed away. One of her famous stories, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own,” represents people who have dishonest or discreet souls. In this story, O’Connor uses Tom’s character as an example of how appearances can produce a misperception. She characterize him as evasive, meticulous, and self-assured. All of which makes up Tom’s personality.
The lessons are numerous and range from trivial to profound, but there’s one that's had the most impact on my life. Fortunately, I was born into a unconditionally loving family with good health and parents that I feel comfortable talking to under almost any circumstance. Until I got to really know my friends, I was aware that not everybody’s lives were like this but never really understood what a life without those privileges was like. But then my perspective changed when I found out that a couple of my friends have terrible relationships with their parents and suffer from depression and anxiety. Another one of my friends suffers from chronic migraines and has been hospitalized three times in the past year. All of my friends are incredible individuals, and knowing in detail of what they withstand on a daily basis has made me more empathetic to the people around me. I think we all forget sometimes that other people are people, we subconsciously go into this state of mind thinking we’re the center of the whole world. But in actuality, that is not the case; everyone else has their own unique lives and issues they’re dealing with. So what I’ve learned by knowing of my friends’ distinctive stories is just to be more cognizant of others. It's difficult to have that state of mind all the time, but in doing so I have better relationships with
The irony of the story is that her husband is alive, but she is dead when he reaches home. The tragic death of her husband help her to grasp the beauty of life and the fact that she does not have much more time to live it. In an hour of time she comes to peace with herself and wins her "battle".
For instance, it was an extremely sunny day in Ghana, West Africa, and I had gone out to the well to fetch water. It was while carrying the bucket of water on my way back that I noticed my neighbor’s children fighting over the insufficient amount of food that they had to share. My family and I were not rich but from what I saw, I knew that we were better off than other people I knew. I carried the bucket of water inside the house and came back outside to call the two youngest children that were fighting over the last grain of food. I shared my food my food with them and though it was not sufficient for all, feeding the younger ones alone was better than not helping any one of them at all. There was only little that I could possibly do but by sharing, I had helped them in a great way, even if it was just for the time being.
