Why do you want to become a master's level social worker? I want to become a master’s level social worker because I would like to work in the healthcare; hospital setting after I graduated. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), a master’s degree in Social Work is often required for social work positions in health care. Health care social workers most often work in hospitals: anything from pediatrics to oncology. The social worker caseload includes people who need to come to grips with difficult diagnoses, locate resources, and make life’s immense decisions. While the focus is not necessarily the mental illness, the master level social workers sometimes diagnose or treat concurrent mental conditions (NASW, 2011-217). Therefore, this is the reason I want to become a master’s level social worker. What areas of social work are you most drawn to? I find myself mostly drawn to mental health/health field since I am interested in addressing problems such as addiction, abuse, or mental illness. These are empathy, active listening, and social perceptiveness. Empathizing is both an intellectual and emotional process that makes it easier to understand and help others solve their problems (John, 2012). I supposed most social workers are empathetic by nature because social workers help clients cope with problems such as poverty, abuse, addiction, unemployment, educational problems, disability, trauma, and mental illness. Likewise, social workers provide individual, family and group counseling, case management services connecting clients with resources and service providers, and other services to empower clients to meet their own needs. Therefore, if the social worker lacks empathy, she/he would not be able to connect with people in
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. The Masters degree of Social Work (MSW) is a degree that defines who you are and where you are going career-wise. If you are getting a Masters Degree in social work you are most likely going into the field of social work. This deems the question of why I want to go into the specific field of social work. A main reason for me to go into the field of social work is that social work fits my set of values moreso than any other field I am qualified for. Social work is a profession inherently about helping people improve their lives. That kind of work is noble and something I would like to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to do things and have a career that would help people and empower their lives. I believe helping people is the only way I can have a clear conscience and sleep well at night. My personal values center around helping people but also about helping people help themselves and improve their own lives. I do not want to treat people who utilize social work services as charity cases or as victims. That is not fair to those people and strips them of their humanity. I hope I can utilize my career as a social work to do as much good as possible in the United States and in the world.
I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

My current job as a Behavioral Intervention Specialist for Bakersfield City School District has motivated me to pursue my masters in social work. Working with troubled students on a daily basis has allowed me to see the great need for social workers at schools. Many students are not successful in school due to their emotional and social issues in their daily lives. I want to be a professional social worker so I can better understand behavior, trauma, and learn of more ways to assist the students at my school. I truly feel The Master of Social Work (MSW) program will prepare me to help create that change in the schools that is desperately needed.
Being able to empathize with clients to understand and identify with their experiences, even if they do not describe their thoughts or feelings explicitly to you. A good social worker can empathize with a wide variety of people, understanding their choices and feelings even if, as a social worker you do not agree with them. I need to be emotionally attuned to individuals ' needs, and will also have to be able to help them identify and articulate their feelings. An angry person, for example, might be struggling with feelings of inadequacy that fuel anger. I consider myself to be a highly empathetic person, therefore, I will be better equipped to detect
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
Being that I am a sexual abuse survivor, I have a particular affinity towards other sexual abuse survivors because I can relate to their challenging situations and life long process of healing. I believe that this will help me connect with them accurately and more effectively. Aside from working with survivors of sexual abuse I have an interest in military social work, gerontology, public welfare, corrections and justice, community development, and international social work. ( apparently I cant narrow these down LOL
I am interested in this because I care deeply about others and want to make a positive impact on the world. Going forward I plan to peruse a Master’s of Social Work, and then become a medical social worker in a hospital setting. I have limited experience working in the medical field, but I believe this is an area I will enjoy working in and one in which I can apply social work skills and knowledge to assist patients. Although I am excited about this type of work, I am also open to other experiences and
Working with people, helping others to achieve their day to day living has always been my passion. When my close friend and his family were going through some hardship in their life, thus when I realized that helping others was not just about assisting with personal care, giving out medication, patching up wounds or broken skin and assisting to the toilet. As there had been some issues with alcohol and drug misuse, the social work team had to intervene to ensure that the health and safety of the family was maintained. The professionalism, commitment and the positive outcome from the involvement from the social work team made me realize that ’this is what I have always wanted to be’. Doing a social work degree at university will equip me with the right knowledge, skills and support to go and achieve my ambitions.
