Ashley Coello Professor A.J. Lash SYG 2010/Contemporary American Social Problems 4 April 2014 Mass Media Each year the evolution of technology continues to grow more and more advancing with time. Media not only plays an enormous role in society but it’s become a part of our individual being and our lifestyle. The issue of the media is that it has interfered with one of the most important elements regarding any type of relationship that being communication. Its not only communication but the media has placed a hold on societies life, instead of being productive we choose to watch television not for just a show but for a full season in one sitting or instead of completing our math homework were able to go and plug the questions into a search engine. The extent of this matter has affected the United States whole heartedly in so many ways. It’s become impossible to not communicate and not come in contact with the media. According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2007, the average adult watched 1,613 hours of television, listened to 177 hours of recorded music, and watched 61 hours of home videos. Aside of technology there are forms of paper media we still use as a nation including the newspaper, magazines, and back to technology having use of internet. The media shows the reflection of this nation wanting a need for more leisure time less in interacting with one another. Technological developments have increased in media choices. I feel this problem goes global in so many different aspects. Everyone is affected by the media even without having technology. For example media distracts us from being productive and doing what we need and then across the world those countries without the media, people in need are not known of, the necessity ... ... middle of paper ... ...de to advertisers. For example commercial television and radio depends on its revenue and then in effect were promised the advertisements products. Media appeals to every class. Of course the higher class has more of advantage involving mass media. Since the very beginning of new ways of communication, ideas, knowledge, and profit have mixed. Media doesn’t necessarily need to be watched it can be read as well. Journalism is also another way media is used. Journalism has been used as an independent institutional source of political and social power that may watch and track the actions of other higher powers such as religion, economics, and politics. Conflict theorists say the media is controlled so those whom control the media are able to manipulate what is real by changing the things we see, hear, and read on a daily basis. Work Cited Page
Today in the late 1990’s we can not escape advertising it bombards us from all types of media and every aspect of our lives. It is a multibillion-pound industry that stereotypes genders and tells us what we could become if we use certain products.
Throughout the years, media has advanced along with technology. They now range in sizes, small to large, and weight, heavy and light. The means of communication we have used evolved from newspapers to televisions, social media, and the list goes on. They aid people in keeping us connected and keeping them informed of new products and of the environment. Media is an important part of the lives of neighbors, friends, family members, and the rest of the world. It is quite often oblivious to all of us, the effect that media has on us. However, where ever we look the effects of media have altered the coarse of living. The clothes we wear, the sports we play, the music we listen to and our political opinions, are all aspects that are influenced by the media.
Media, in its largest sense, hypothetically is one small page in the large "book of life". However, nineteenth century society has based an entire chapter of their lives on what happens in every medium used for communication. Through the creation of radio and of television in the late 1940's, and the modernization of newspapers and magazines, specifically, American culture has devoted themselves to a mass communications lifestyle in which they base most of their well being upon.
The rise of media in our society has many effects on the consumers of the media. Many people propose the question: is this media making us dumber? Today there are a lot more forms of media available to people today. Through the media outlets of television and news, internet and user-generated content, and social media, people have many options as to where they receive their media. As a whole, the mass media dumbs down society, through their attempt to keep up with the changing of times and reach large masses of people. It is up to the consumer of the media what type they want to partake in. How do media compete in such an environment? The only way to compete is to go with it. To become it, and to help it. New forms of mass media is happening, will happen, and will not stop because we are a constantly changing society. The media tries to put a new spin on media that combines older media techniques with a new more advanced form of media that attempts to reach all of society. Even though they are effective at reaching mass crowds of viewers, and reaching people who may not have ever engaged in issues, they dumb down society by limiting the thoroughness of information presented.
In the past couple of decades, media has been emerging to become a major part of human civilization; it certainly has changed and shaped our lifestyle, culture, and future. Media brings variety of things to our lives, both positively and negatively. It has made our lives more entertained, resourceful, engaged, connected, updated, and abundant. It is nearly impossible to find someone living without a smart phone, laptop, tablet, and or television. People are so connected to media and technology for various reasons, and one being the access to media content. It is harder and harder to see an individual carrying a newspaper with him or her; instead, we see people read news on their devices and television. Furthermore, people can also access to

Stereotypes is a big issue within the media industry. Representation within the media is to show someone or something, using a process of depicting, descripting and symbolization. Stereotypes, as described by Stuart Hall, is the “production of the meaning of the concepts in our minds through language which enables us to refer to either the ‘real’ world of objects, people or events, or indeed to imaginary worlds of fictional objects, people and events”. In his research Hall has suggested that there is two systems of representation, the first system regarding direct associations of events, people and objects that have certain mental representations and concepts that people have in their minds. Meaning is therefore

What is the media in contemporary America? Media is the essential source of information about what is going on in America and the world. The media is where the vast majority of the people receive their information and news. The manipulation of the media can promote the death of freedom in modern America. The media is a great tool for information, but people should not give nearly all of their faith in them. The media evolved from an information channel to an entertainment source. Nearly every single media is revised by some high power such as the government. Most small children are becoming worse due to the influence of the media. Over the years, media has become more manipulative toward their viewers, trying to impose a one sided story in which they only want the people to listen to. The most power in the United States would go to the government because they are the top commanding what needs to be done. This being said, the government can control the media to only view what they want the people to see, limiting the truth and a one-sided opinion. In the novel It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, he depicts fear will compel the people to abandon their freedom to be secure from any harm. The manipulation of the media is greatly to blame, distributing fear to the people so the government can be in control of them.
Media has become a powerful source of knowledge, and a great breakthrough in human history. Who can regret that media is a daily need in our lives. Media has the ability and control to adjust to all levels of knowledge in people. Media helps us to escape from our daily lives and our problems in times of stress. Thou Media as proved to be beneficial by educating, entertaining and informing us, it has also have its downfall, to cause many bad influences to the younger audience. Media has influenced us to conduct bad behavior, breed violence among teens and fear to the public, thus causing a lot of negative conflicts among ourselves. Television, Music, Internet, and more, are just some of the media exposure that needs to be censored and controlled. Media needs to be restricted, so that it doesn’t expose certain content to the wrong audience. Therefore media should be censored, so that we are able to protect our children from certain media exposure.
If one asked “What is media literacy?” a majority of people would be puzzled. Some would say that it is the ‘written’ part of media that is not usually seen or a written layout of how media should be produced. The bulk of people would say they have no idea what media literacy is. People in today’s society should be informed about media literacy. Society should be informed of what media literacy exactly is and how it applies to the field of communications.
