Throughout history, women have been oppressed and seen as subservient to men. Gender differences denied women the right to education, among many factors that men had. Women lived their lives to be wives and mothers while men went to school, held careers, interests passions and individual lives outside of the homes women so rarely left. Mary Wollstonecraft expressed her abhorrence for this injustice in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Later in the same year of 1792, Anna Barbauld responded by attacking Wollstonecraft with her “The Rights of Woman.” Both women present a clear, though opposing argument allowing the reader further insight of the oppression plaguing women in the late eighteenth century. At the time Mary Wollstonecraft wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, females were extremely limited in their education, careers and life choices. Women were educated in coquettish arts such as to sing, paint, and play music, or essentially to entertain. A more adequate education for women would be more advantageous in a myriad of aspects. She argues that either women and men are too fundamentally different, or society has been very biased towards the latter (Wollstonecraft 213). Mary Wollstonecraft lived in a time where women had no right to vote, no right to education beyond what their mother or governess taught them, and basically no right to individuality or an opinion. They were considered possessions and virtually had no mind of their own. She realized that this was a problem of society and openly voiced her opinions on the matter. She wrote the book A Vindication of the Rights of Women in response to a literary response to the society's so-called proper behavior of a woman and what her rights should be. But her opinions were brought on by more that the ability to think for herself; she suffered much during her childhood and throughout the years to come. Wollstonecraft dealt with the beating of her mother and sister, death of a close friend, and even a nervous breakdown of her sister. Her own experiences in her life inspired her to write a book that would cause her to be criticized harshly for her radical views.

A change in feminism is shown between Wollstonecraft’s essay and Young’s essay. As women first demanded rights, they were coming out of complete dependence on men. Wollstonecraft and other activists fought for the basic right of education for women. As women gained liberty, they began to oppress themselves in the Third Wave of feminism. Wollstonecraft focused on the basic rights of women in her paper, saying “They must be permitted to turn to the fountain of light, and not forced to shape their course by the twinkling of a mere satellite” (Wollstonecraft 5). Here Wollstonecraft is saying that women need to be given the opportunity to get a good education, not just be taught by what their husbands tell them, so they could be their better selves.
Mary Wollstonecraft was as revolutionary in her writings as Thomas Paine. Fanny Blood played an important role in her life to opening her to new ideas of how she actually sees things. Mary opened a school with her sister Eliza and their friend Fanny Blood. Back then for them being a teacher made them earn a living during that time, this made her determined to not rely on men again. Mary felt as if having a job where she gets paid for doing something that back then was considered respected than she wouldn’t need a man to be giving her money. She wasn’t only a women’s right activist but she was a scholar, educator and journalist which led her to writing books about women’s rights.
They should be able to have a financial independence and not always rely on the men to support them. This would make the women better socially speaking, and they would, as a result of having independence and financial stability, be able to be better mother figures in their children’s lives. Education would be a huge factor in giving women equal opportunities as men. Education is extremely important to be able to do more advanced skills that are required as you grow up and move out of the house without always needing a man to depend on. With equal opportunity for women to get an education just like a man’s, they will be able to, for example, be a better mother to their children, because they will not spoil their children but they also aren’t going to tyrannize over them. There needs to be better support systems for women as well to be able to learn household tasks such as changing the tire on the car, reroofing the home, or cutting wood for the wood burning stove. With the help of a proper school education and the education of these household tasks, women would be at a much greater advantage than they are sitting in the home cooking, cleaning, and watching the children. Mary Wollstonecraft was a self-educated, radical philosopher who wrote about liberation, and empowering women. She had a powerful voice on her views of the rights of women to get good education and career opportunities. She pioneered the debate for women’s rights inspiring many of the 19th and the 20th century’s writers and philosophers to fight for women’s rights, as well. She did not only criticize men for not giving women their rights, she also put a blame on women for being voiceless and subservient.
