Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He was born in Atlanta, GA. He was also raised in Atlanta. King’s birth name was Michael King, but he decided to change it. He became the second child to his parents. King’s parents had 3 kids, including himself. He was the middle child; he had an older sister and a younger brother. He was excelling in studies. He took part of debates which made a name for himself by speaking to the public. Young Martin was very affected by the racial segregation that he found out by hanging with his white friend, but the kid’s mother told the kid to not play with King because of his skin color. King’s family had only 4 people in it. His mother, Alberta Williams King. His father’s name was Martin Luther
King Senior. His older sister was named Willie Christine King. Last but not least, his younger brother, Alfred Daniel Williams King. King was valued and dedicated to his education. He excelled all studies in elementary, middle, and high school. Although King was excelling in his studies, he had skipped the ninth and twelfth grade. He went to Morehouse College at age 15. Martin was inspired by some people to make the world a better place for everyone. One of the people that influenced and inspired him was Ghandi. In addition to this, he was inspired by Marcus Garvey. Many people are inspired by MLK and what he did. MLK announced his “ I have a dream” speech in Washington, DC. He gave his speech on August 28, 1963. One of the sentences in his speech was “ I have a dream that one day my four children will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” He delivered the speech around massive of civil rights group gathered around. He has inspired people all around the world. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He died in Memphis, TN. He died at the age of 39. He was assassinated by a sniper as he stood on the balcony of his hotel room. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy continues all around the world. Loads of people are inspired by him. We celebrate his birthday as remembrance to him. He is considered one of the most important people today. He is the reason why there is no segregation.
On April 4, 1968 shortly after 1800 hours, Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot while standing on the hotel balcony of his second story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee (Saferstein, 2014). King was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers strike and was on his way to dinner when he was shot in the head and neck area. King was rushed to a Memphis hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after 1900 hours. Martin Luther King Jr. was only 39 years old when he was assassinated (History, 2017). Forensic specialists stated that the bullet struck him in the jaw and severed his spinal cord.
