Martin Luther grew up in a time when there was basically one religion to look upon. Luther was born on November 10, 1483, in Eisleben, Germany. He was raised Catholic by his family that was held together by his father, Hans. Hans was a miner, and he worked his way up to the middle class by leasing mines and furnaces. With the money that he earned, he bought his family a house, and he became a well-respected citizen of their new hometown, Mansfeld. At seven years old, Martin began his schooling to fill his father’s dream of becoming a lawyer. At school, he learned the basics and was taught Latin. The students were not only to learn how to speak Latin, but they also had to speak the language at all times. At age thirteen, a new school boarded young Luther. He was sent thirty miles north to the city of Magdenburg. His time spent there was short. The year that he attended the school, he learned of his ambition to serve God. Luther spoke fondly of the Brothers at the school. They showed Luther what it was like to witness God’s power. Martin finished off his boarding school years at St. George’s School, located in Eisenach. Luther had many great memories of St. George’s, including one of his teachers, Johann Trebonius. Luther enjoyed Trebonius’ teachings because of the equality that was displayed between the students and the teacher. The Civil Rights Movement is one of the most important events of the history of the United States. Although many people contributed to this movement, Martin Luther King, Jr., is widely regarded as the leader of the movement for racial equality. Growing up in the Deep South, King saw the injustices of segregation first hand. King’s studies of Mahatma Ghandi teachings influenced his views on effective ways of protesting and achieving equality. Martin Luther King’s view on nonviolence and equality and his enormous effect on the citizens of America makes him the most influential person of the twentieth century.
Meditation is an important psychological practice that protects the brain against aging as well as enhancing an individual’s ability to learn new things. This practice achieves this through sharpening focus, lessening stress, lowering blood pressure, and relieving chronic pain. Generally, it helps a person to experience greater calm, connect with deepest feelings, and challenges tendencies of self-judgment. Consequently, meditation leads to open doors for actual and accessible happiness for an individual. According to Salzberg (2011), meditation is basically training an individual’s attention in order to become more aware of inner workings and external incidents (p.7). After becoming more aware of inner workings and external incidents, a person can choose his/her actions towards things that are visible. While each global religion incorporates some kind of thoughtful exercise, meditation in today’s world is usually practiced separately from any belief system.
Paragraph fourteen of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is the paragraph that makes the strongest appeal to the reader’s emotions by providing vivid examples of how hatred, racism, and discrimination negatively affected the lives of African Americans. These vivid examples range from stories of him explaining segregation to his children to the police brutality that was taking place throughout the south. Dr. King expresses himself in a way that forces the reader to visualize and deeply feel these events. His passionate use of rhetoric creates an emotional connection between the reader and the African Americans experiencing these injustices.
Andrew Jackson was a controversial man. He was greatly admired by many, but despised by others. Andrew Jackson was raised by his father and also lived along with his brother. His mother died shortly after giving birth. He grew up poor and right in the mist of the American Revolution. He fought in the Revolutionary War at thirteen years of age. He went on to become a lawyer and then moved to Tennessee where in met his wife. Later in life he became a delegate or the Tennessee Constitutional Convention, then a United States representative, followed by serving as a Tennessee senator. He later became a judge of Tennessee superior court. He then became a major general for Tennessee militia where he wins over many of the colonist at the victory of the New Orleans war. He becomes a great conqueror in the eyes of Americans people. However, high class people do not appreciate his unruly attitudes. Then it all comes down to the presidency. How he received the honor, what he did with it, and what people thought about his actions.
The famous speech of Martin Luther King The famous speech, “ I Have a Dream”, was held in 1963 by a powerful leader of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. He was born January 15, 1929, the son of an Atlanta Pastor. Martin Luther King Jr. always insisted on nonviolent resistance and always tried to persuade others with his nonviolent beliefs. In 1963, King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and almost 200,000 people attended his speech. All his listeners were Civil Rights supporters who rallied behind him and the people who watched his appearance on television.
Andrew Jackson had many ups and downs of his early life. He is born on March 15, 1767 in Waxhaw, which is on the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. His father died in a lumber accident 3 weeks before his birth. This left his mother and extended family devastated along with Andrew Jackson and his brother, fatherless. There is little education offered in the area he is born and there is even less after the British invasion of the Carolinas in 1780-1781. Andrew Jackson and his brother both join the army and in the closing year of the war he is captured by the British and taken into prison along with his brother. When he is imprisoned he refuses to shine a British guard’s shoe and is slapped across the face with a sabre leaving permanent scars. His brother and himself were stricken with small pox and grew extremely ill while they were captured. His mother arranged a prisoner exchange for Jackson and his brother and they were soon released. Jackson’s brother died and his mother left him to help others aid the wounded soldiers in Charleston. She soon developed cholera and died quickly. Hans Luther wanted to give his children better education than he has himself growing up. They started to teach Martin as soon as they could. Even if he was at home he was always learning. But in school because the schoolteachers were ignorant, he received fifteen whippings one morning at school. Martin referred the name of "school" to "hell and purgatory". When the schoolmasters at Mansfeld were through pounding Latin into Luther with a stick, he was getting ready to go to Magdeburg for school. Because Luther was so poor to have money for his own expenses, Luther had to sing in the streets. It was common for Luther to see other students as poor as him standing in front of wealthy citizen houses. Sometimes they were invited to come in for some food. He stayed in Magdeburg for about one year before moving to Eisenach and going to a school known as The School Of St. George. Ursula Cotta heard Luther singing in the street for money. So she and her Husband, Conrad, invited Luther to come into their beautiful home and share its comforts with them. Then in about May of 1501, Luther enrolled as a student at Erfurt. Then in 1502, he took the degree of Bachelor of Arts and three years later that of Master of Arts.
