It was another day shopping for clothes, nothing new, in fact I thought I was going to get something here and there, look else where and go home. As I was walking through a mall, I stumbled upon a store that I thought looked cool and casual. I thought to myself anything that was interesting enough to catch my eyes, had to be investigated thoroughly. As soon, as I walked in I new that I could easily begin to shop at the store for certain things I needed. Buckle is a clothing store that shares its store by selling Lucky Brand clothing. Now many people may disagree on the prices that are set on the clothing, however, in a society where being cool and individualism is valued, Buckle is the place to go. Interested in wanting to see what more the clothing line had to offer, I visited the Buckle website, noticing that everything seems to fit in place and markets what it is supposed to very well. The clothing line is for young men and women who want a change from their old shopping outlets to a more exciting, fun, cool and casual store. In the next pages we’ll explore what Buckle and Lucky Brand have in store for today’s youth and why it is marketed well.
Buckle and Lucky Brand are the product’s manufacturer and distributor. Young, middle class, men and women who are cool and spontaneous seems to be the main stream of consumers for the brands. The website is mainly focused on traditional American patriotism for the modern youth. The website, clothes and stores generally emphasize that in order for one to be cool, one must buy their merchandise. Luck Brand Dungarees are a perfect example of claiming to dominate the world of quality jeans. The word “dungaree” means a pair of sturdy, durable, twill-weave of cotton fabric made into jeans. Written on the dungarees (and on the website) are the Lucky Brand slogans “Americas Favorite” and “Wear us, be lucky”. I bought two pair of jeans recently, on the inseam of the zippers is the phrase “Lucky You” and I also found a strip of paper that once again notes that if the customer wears the jeans, he/she will be lucky.
Victorian Women were highly held back in their full potential. Their main role in the household was to “be happy - a sunbeam in the house, making others happy” (Hardy, E.J. 1887). On top of this, Women in the Victorian era were not allowed to display their sexuality or “tempt” men in public; they were meant to be submissive and meek (Causey S., 2008). The Victorian era lasted from 1837 til 1901, with women being punished everyday for crimes that are nowadays just part of living for a woman. Bram Stoker was born during this era and wrote his most famous novel, Dracula (Miller, E. unknown). One of the main discourses in this novel is that of Women and their Morality of the time.
First, Sister Aloysius accuses Father Flynn that he gave a wine to Donald Muller. In the play, when Father Flynn and Sister James are at Sister Aloysius’s office, Sister Aloysius tells Father Flynn that “there was alcohol on [Donald Muller’s] breath” (Shanly 33) and Sister James “did smell it on his breath” (33). After that, Father Flynn tells her the truth that “Mr. McGinn caught [Donald Muller] in the sacristy drinking alter wine” (33) and Donald Muller begged Father Flynn “not to be removed from the altar boys” (34). Father Flynn tells her that he was with Donald Muller in the rectory because he was scared that he will be removed from the altar boys because Mr. McGinn caught him drinking wine. After Father Flynn tells the truth Sister Aloysius still has doubt that he is lying and so she wonders if “it’s easier to believe him?” (35). “Dracula’ depicts what happens when Victorian women abandon their role as house-maker, house-wife and the ‘possession’ of their husband. Lucy is the ‘wanton’ women in this case, presented as subtly sexual with her flirtations to not one but three suitors, her sexual innuendos for example, about the size of one beau’s knife and continual requests for being kissed. In contrast, Mina is the embodiment of the perfect Victorian woman, the Gothic female. She is steadfast and reliable, and knows her role as a demure submissive fiancé. She personifies the new era of working women with a sensible job as a teacher, indicative of her intelligence.
Dracula brought the changes occurring in society between men and women into the light: “...he blurs the line between man and woman by demonstrating female passion,”(Punter 28). During Dracula’s time, the role of women was to nurture the families and provide structure within the household, while men’s role included stabling the family financially. Women were thought to have a natural mothering attribute, “ I suppose there is something in a woman’s nature that makes a man break down before her and express his feelings on the tender or emotional side without feeling derogatory to his manhood” ( Stoker 327) , which Mina shows often throughout the novel. Part of what makes a woman a woman is the fact she can have the ability to care for everyone. However, Mina is also the model portraying woman’s ability to have brains, “ [Mina] has a man's brain—a brain that a man should have were he much gifted—and a woman's heart. The good God fashioned her for a purpose, believe me, when He made that so good combination,” (Stoker 355). The thought of a woman being capable of having such intelligent thoughts was rare, as it was expected to be the man’s job. As is being the purser in the relationship, but in the beginning of the novel we are shown Jonathan being pursed by the Dracula’s brides. Stoker sets this interaction up in a way that shows the brides not only possessing manly qualities, but Jonathan expressing womanly qualities, as well: “ I lay quiet, looking out from under my eyelashes in an agony of delightful anticipation. The fair girl advanced and bent over me till I could feel the movement of her breath upon me,” (Stoker 55). The brides’ attempt to woo Jonathan, equivalent to the normal actions a man would take when in a relationship with a woman. Lucy enjoys the attention of her male suitors and even indecently jokes about polygamy, expressing a hidden want for sexual autonomy. Once Dracula arrives in England, Lucy becomes his initial target. Lucy’s sleepwalking shapes her into an ideal victim, as she is exposed in a vulnerable state in which her subconscious yearnings are more accessible and she is also physically available to Dracula. For her break of social protocol, she is transformed into a vampire, characterized by “voluptuous wantonness” (Stoker 231). She becomes even more beautiful in her undeath, in a state where she can embrace her sexuality, which enforces the belief that visible sensuality in women is unorthodox. Subsequently, Lucy is finally killed and reverted to her original, pre-vampiric state, when her fiancee, the male figure she was to be subordinate to, stakes her. This action cements a patriarchal figure’s control over Lucy once again, who only then, can be returned to a peaceful state of purity, while the other two prospective suitors watch as Arthur exert his dominance over Lucy. Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, published in 1897, explores various sexual erotic possibilities in the vampire's embrace, as discussed by Leonard Wolf. In doing this I will be able to explore the effects of the vampire's embrace in depth, and achieve a wider understanding of the variety of erotic undercurrents Stoker incorporated into the novel.
