Marketing of Tobacco Products
Marketing is a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and values with others.(Kotler, Armstrong, Saunders, Wong page 5)
One of the products that are exchanged through marketing is cigarettes. Tobacco is considered an inherently unethical product because is addictive, dangerous and causes environmental damage. Tobacco is also considered a pleasing product because its immediate satisfaction is high but sometimes has harmful effects in the long run.
One of the long run effects of smoking is that four million people are killed every year and is estimated that the figure will rise to ten million by 2030 if current trends remain unchanged. (Yach, Brinchmann, Bellet page 2). Early deaths of non-smokers reduce their contribution to society but the high-cost required by elderly from pensions, treatment and other benefits. Also, tobaccos duties are a major source of income for the government and so the government might want a high and inelastic demand for cigarettes. (Sloman page 85). That is the reason why governments resisted a total advertising ban on tobacco products and subsidized the production of low-grade tobacco in European community countries, in the past.
However the anti- smoking groups claim that the health costs caused from smoking outweigh the revenue benefits. The future medical costs of a young smoker could be about $13700, excluding inflation. Finally, shareholders do not invest their money to unethical investments, as mentioned above, so if tobacco companies want to continue be part of investing projects they must support the regulation of cigarettes.
Therefore, tobacco firms can use their power (political power) and their money to enforce sound ethics for the benefit of the society as a whole (since marketing is a social process) to keep in track with the rest of the industries so that they will continue to be profitable. After all, as Friedman said, businesses should… 'Increase its profits as long as it stays with the rules of the game.'

Questioning whether it is ethically right to defend something like tobacco sounds useless since we know the health consequences that come from smoking but the question is necessary. The film Thank You For Smoking touches on the topic of right and wrong. Instinctively, we would assume that taking the side of the tobacco lobbyists would be the wrong thing to do as it would seem like we’re disregarding the health effects of it but there are a few ways to justify taking that stance on the subject. The explanation of your decisions is what determines if what you did was right.
The question is, who should be held accountable? And what should be done? There is clearly no way tobacco will never be outlawed, but I believe there should be tighter restrictions on age limits throughout the world, and restrictions on the materials that are used in cigarette processing. Who is just letting cigarette companies continue to poison people and cause cancer risk? Throughout my essay, I will analyze the affects of cigarette use on the society of the world and the elaborate corruption that keeps cigarette companies in business.
All companies sell their products strictly to make money. A tobacco company sells tobacco for the same reason. No companies force the consumer to purchase the product. Tobacco companies do not make force people to purchase tobacco. The tobacco company may have a guilty conscience knowing that the product that they sell has led to many illness related fatalities, but once again the company did not for the product on the consumers. The tobacco company is not at fault for any of the illnesses, because the company did not make anyone go into the store, purchase the tobacco, and make the person use it. America is a free Nation. A nation of choice, but many Americans make choices that put their bodies at risk every day. This choice to use tobacco is one made daily by the user not by the producer.
Some actions should be taken on tobacco products because the risk of getting cancer is high. People vape everywhere in today’s society, blowing a massive amount of smoke that lingers in the air and could cause people nearby to cough or even children near it to cough. There needs to be a policy to ban cigarettes, it kills the smoker, in addition, it could kill the person exposed to the smoke from cigarettes. “The cigarette is also a defective product, meaning not just dangerous but unreasonably dangerous, killing half its long-term users” (Proctor). Cigarettes are not healthy in any way making it a defective product, it mainly kills the smoker rather than helping them.
Each year 440,000 people die, in the United States alone, from the effects of cigarette smoking (American Cancer Society, 2004). As discussed by Scheraga & Calfee (1996) as early as the 1950’s the U.S. government has utilized several methods to curb the incidence of smoking, from fear advertising to published health warnings. Kao & Tremblay (1988) and Tremblay & Tremblay (1995) agreed that these early interventions by the U.S. government were instrumental in the diminution of the national demand for cigarettes in the United States. In more recent years, state governments have joined in the battle against smoking by introducing antismoking regulations.
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
The text states that marketing is both an art and a science where constant tension exists between the formulated and creative sides. At its essence, marketing is about "identifying and meeting human and social needs". It encompasses both a set of actions which seek to identify customers' needs as well as a social process of establishing a relationship with the customer to buy their products; this relationship is vital to the long term success for a company and a critical part of the marketing equation (Kotler & Keller, 2006).

I do believe however that there is something that the tobacco companies can do to better their strategy as far as their ethics go. I think that they should, always be looking for the best interest on their consumers, as well as advertise strictly on the effects that the cigarettes and what the people are getting for their money.
The sale of cigarettes and tobacco is a multi-billion dollar industry, but is it truly worth all the problems that stem from their use. Health care costs are extremely high due to all the health problems associated with cigarettes and tobacco. Even though research has proven time and time again the harmful effects of cigarettes, and the rising cost of health care caused by cigarettes our government will not take a stand and stop all manufacturing of the horrible toxins.
