Products and service are created to appeal to a certain market. Creating a strategy with consumers in mind is a target market. To take marketing a step further market segmentation can be utilized. Target marketing is the term for directing marketing endeavors toward consumers. Breaking down of the market into smaller groups with intention of promoting products or services is identified as market segmentation. Market segmentation divides broad markets into smaller segment groups such as female, male, adult or children. Market segmentation occurs using factors that fit into four categories such as; geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral.

Starbucks Corporation is one of the world's largest coffee roaster, marketer, and retailer of coffee. In 1971, three entrepreneurs, Jordan Bowker, Zev Siegel, and Jerry Baldwin opened first Starbucks store in Seattle, WA. In 1982, Howard Schultz joined Starbucks as a marketing director. He came up with the idea to make Starbucks a coffee house chain but Starbucks founders rejected the idea and he left the company in 1985. Later, Schultz started his own coffee bar named “Il Giornale”. In a couple of years, he was able to buy Starbucks Corp. from its original owners. He renamed his coffee bars "Il Giornale" as Starbucks. In 1987, Starbucks opened its first store outside the Seattle in Vancouver and Chicago. Segmentation is the process of identifying different macro-groups of customers (i.e. segments) based on their common characteristics. The process of choosing a target segment, on which to focus marketing activities on, is a process named targeting.
To begin with, it is crucial to appreciate the meaning of segmentation and targeting because these two terms lay the foundation for this report. Consequently, segmentation is dividing a market, into groups of consumers with homogenous traits in order to provide each group with the desired product. What is the meaning of targeting? It is where an enterprise evaluates every segment with an objective of identifying segments with promising business opportunities. Considering the nature of the product in question, it sufficed to mention that liquor- filled chocolates are to be sold to adults.

Starbucks Coffee Company coffeehouses are famous for a meeting place to enjoy a flavor-filled coffee or tea along with a delectable treat with good friends, family, or coworkers. Starbucks sell premium coffee roasts for any person’s preference along with a wide menu of hot and cold drinks and treats to satisfy any customer (Starbucks Coffee, 2014). The value Starbucks sets into the economy, workplace, and in the products is visible in the mission statement. Year over year, Starbucks has been able to increase their revenues. No matter how the economy is doing, Starbucks has efficiently managed its cost structure by adapting and diversifying its product line-up allowing for increased profitability.

They started as retailers of ground coffee tea and spices with a single in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. Starbucks is named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and their logo is inspired by the sea-featuring a twin-tailed siren from Greek mythology. Starbucks had always wanted to inspire the human spirit. They believe in serving the best coffee by growing the coffee under quality standards. Starbucks believes rendering good services to customers is very significant to the success of the company. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks now has more than 20,000 stores in over 60 countries and they offer some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. In regards to the corporation’s balance sheet, it is necessary to place an importance on liquidity ratios to demonstrate the company’s ability to pay its short term obligations such as accounts payable and notes that have a duration of less than one year. These commonly used liquidity ratios include the current ratio, quick ratio, and cash ratio. All three ratios are used to measure the liquidity of a company or business. The current ratio is used to indicate a business’s ability to meet maturing obligations. The quick ratio is used to indicate the company’s ability to pay off debt. Finally the cash ratio is used to measure the amount of capital as well short term counterparts a business has over its current liabilities.

Each segment must be unique, have common needs, and respond in a similar manner to marketing efforts. Target market is the group of potential customer that has been selected by business to focus its marketing efforts towards. This is the group the business wants to sell its products/services to. Positioning refers to the image created in the minds of customer of its product or brand. It is a perception created in the minds of the consumer relative to that of its competitors.
Segmentation is a marketing strategy that involves separating a wide target market into small groups of customers who share the common need of using or purchasing the product that needs to be marketed. Market segmentation strategies are utilized to identify these groups of consumers and strategies are designed and implemented to make the product or service appeal to them. Support and also the product will be strategically placed in order to successfully achieve the ultimate marketing goal. Businesses and organizations may come up with different type of strategies involving different products and catchy phrases depending on the product or the target segment.
According to IBIS World Report the major players in the US coffee and snacks retail market are Starbucks and Dunkin’ Brands at 36.7% and 24.6% market share respectively with other competitors occupying the remaining market share of 38.7%. The industry is at the mature stage of its life cycle, has low barriers to entry and intense competition and rivalry between the players.
