Realism has been formed from the root word “real”; depending on how the word is used realism can be sued in many ways. We often use the word realism when analyzing characters or objects in novels, stories, or even in movies. Realism is the mindset a person has in a particular situation at the giving time (for example if it’s snow outside, than, we know to dress for the cold weather because it’s snow outside; we don’t have to come outside to see if it’s cold).Realism can also be referred to realistic or realist meaning that things can be describes from a social, emotional, or a visual view; anything can be realism, realistic, or realist. Mark Twain uses realism in his stories because they are based on real things that could happen in life. Twain portrays his stories in such a way that all readers can get an understanding of the characters. Twain also gives his reader a visual that makes the reader want to know what will happen next. The reader can easily pick up on Twain’s characters in a social or an emotional view; his work gives the reader a clear vision by putting his work in detail, especially about the character’s emotions. Twains goes into depth with his stories; his narrative skills are great; he narrates in ways that make you think that you are one of the characters in the story. His narrative ways make you feel the character’s emotions. In Mark Twain story “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” Smiley was a character that represented the realist because he had a gambling habit (his gambling habit caused him to be the character that he is); he was a very deceiving character that lives by gambling. Smiley life was a game to him; he would bet on everything (gamble to smiley was normal). Smiley’s attitude about gambling makes him a realist because this was his life in a real-life situation to him. Smiley thought that he would win every bet until the table was turned and someone cheated him. Henry James “The Real Thing” is the perfect example of realism. Henry’s narrative skills portrayed the characters as if the story was actually happening. He tells the reader the situation of the story as the characters are experiencing the situation. The Real thing is what we see every day (real life). It seems as if the story was based on a true story.
Bret Harte's "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" is an excellent example of realism. Harte uses realistic characters that use everyday language with a hint of local color from California, which is where the story is set. The characters are put through real situations and faced with troubles that we go through day to day. Bret Harte lived through the California gold rush and was able to create a very realistic setting and characters. Since he actually experienced the culture and people of this time the words create a very detailed picture, and the characters come to life in your
Mark Twain’s use of humor in the story mocks and shines light on the issues of our society’s political system from back then that continue
Mark Twain is considered one of America 's most highly regarded literary icons. He upholds this status by utilizing parallelism to include bits of information about himself in the novel. Throughout the story, Twain keeps a sort of idol-influenced motivation
The increase in immigrants into America was one of the reasons. Realists endeavored to give a comprehensive picture of modern life by presenting the entire picture. The true definition of literary realism as defined by Encyclopedia Britannica is an approach that attempts to describe life without idealization or romantic subjectivity. Although realism is not limited to any one-century or group of writers, it is most often associated with the literary movement in 19th-century France, specifically with the French novelists Flaubert and Balzac. George Eliot introduced realism into England, and William Dean Howells introduced it into the United States.
Twain describes local customs and the ways that the characters behave to create a more realistic setting for the story. In the story the characters engage in behavior or activities that would be unusual for a regular person to do. For example, the narrator says:
Realism, in philosophical terms, refers to the concept that there is a reality beyond our perception. This means that how we see things and what we believe about them has no impact on the nature of said things. For example an individual may see an object as blue and another see the same object to be red, this is merely a disagreement between both parties about how they should label the colour. This wouldn’t mean that both parties are discussing different objects, this shows that no matter what individual’s beliefs or thoughts on the real world are only ever approximations and do not accurately capture reality. (O’Brien, M and Yar, M, 2008)
Realism claims that what we can review about our surrounding is established in the fact that they absolutely exist. What we believe about gathered information is what we think about the actual world. It states that there is an actual world that assimilates directly with what we think about it.
Realism started in France in the 1830s. It was very popular there for a long time. A man named Friedrich Schiller came up with the word “realism.” Realism is based on contemporary life. There is a very accurate and honest representation of characters in this style of art. Realism tries to combine romanticism and the enlightenment. Life isn’t just about mind and not just about feelings either, it’s about both feelings and reason together. As said in the na...
Realism occurs everyday, one may not know but its the reason why know not everyone gets to live their lives to a happy ending, its the reason why sometimes you can't get everything you want in your life. Realism is the attitude or practice of accepting a situation as it is and being prepared to deal with it accordingly. Realism is a trend which takes place in the nineteenth century during which literature depicted life "as is," and focuses on real life. This literary movement frequently depicted everyday life; it follows the rule of a phenomenal world and that nothing is added to your life. It is the reverse job of what a filter would do to all the troubles that one may encounter later in life. Realism is represented in Kate Chopin's short stories The Story of an Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings. In both the short stories, the main characters get to face a dream/fantasy that they’ve always wanted to encounter; something rare that lasted only for a short amount of time. The freedom that each character got was some sort of new freedom that they never experienced before. For example in The Story of an Hour, the main character Louise Mallards is feels oppressed because she can't live for herself. She realizes at the end that her husband was alive the whole time and that her short fantasy came to an end. She thought that it would last forever until the death of her but she was wrong. Another example of realism is A Pair of Silk Stockings, the main character of this story was Little Mrs Sommers. She finds fifteen dollars on the floor and this feeling of having this much money eventually controls her until its all gone. Her lack of being able to control herself and curiosity controls her and the money. W...
Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835 under the name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens as “the sixth living child of John and Jane Clemens” in the town of Florida, Monroe County, Missouri (Cox 7). While there his father operated a general store and tried fruitlessly to create an invention to bring him riches. Therefore, before long, the store failed and John Clemens moved the family to Hannibal, Missouri which Mark Twain would make famous. Little Sam, as he was called in his younger years, was never particularly close to him family with the exception of his mother who he greatly admired and looked up to. At this time Twain five siblings, his three brothers “Orion, Benjamin, and Henry, and his [two] sisters, Pamela and Mary” (Cox 9).
Literary artists refuse to be categorized, defined, and completely fathomed by any standardized paradigm, but a writer's work exhibits his or her personality traits. Though authors are incapable of being defined by mere personality traits, literary accomplishments, and literary criticisms, an author's personality can be used to sketch a limited definition of his or her literature. Mark Twain's literature manifests his personality's candor, graphicness, humor, and criticalness that William Dean Howells describes in "My Mark Twain." These attributes are evident in "Old Times on the Mississippi," The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," "Fennimore Cooper's Literary Offenses," and "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg." Howells' portrayal of Twain facilitates some understanding of Twain's fiction, but by no means is Mark Twain's literature as simple as four personality traits. The traits of Twain's literature transcend simple entertainment, and he enlightens the reader about the need to reform literature, religion, society, and the individual.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by the pseudonym Mark Twain, has been central to American literature for over a century. His seemingly effortless diction accurately exemplified America’s southern culture. From his early experiences in journalism to his most famous fictional works, Twain has remained relevant to American writing as well as pop culture. His iconic works are timeless and have given inspiration the youth of America for decades. He distanced himself from formal writing and became one of the most celebrated humorists. Mark Twain’s use of the common vernacular set him apart from authors of his era giving his readers a sense of familiarity and emotional connection to his characters and himself.
Realism is a literary style in which the author describes people, their actions, their emotions and surroundings as close to the reality as possible. The characters are not perfectly good or completely evil; they exhibit strengths and weaknesses, just as real people. The characters often commit crimes or do immoral things, and are not always just good or just evil. In a realistic novel, aspects of the time period or location are also taken into consideration. Characters dress in clothes that befit them, and speak with local dialects. Most importantly, characters are not sugar coated or exaggerated. The characters do things as they would normally do them, and are not worse or better then their real life counterparts.
The last realism value is the use of everyday speech patterns to reveal class distinctions. Everyone has a different way a speaking and one way of classifying that is of class. This element can be found anywhere in the book when a character talks. For example, “‘Yeah? Married two weeks and got the eye? Maybe that’s why Curley’s pants is full of ants’”(Steinbeck,1937,p68). This quote shows how one of the characters talks and it’s different from how people talk in 2016. It also shows how one class will talk differently than another
