In Janet Lewis’s “The Wife of Martin Guerre”, Bertrande, the protagonist, is a sixteenth century woman who is thrown into a loveless marriage at the age of eleven, at the age of fourteen her mother dies, and once she has finally started developing feelings for this man whom she has been forced to marry, he leaves her in order to save himself from his angry father who he stole seed from. Several years after Martin leaves, Bertrande is introduced to a man who claims to be Martin Guerre, who is really an imposter. While socially and spiritually committed to her husband, she is physically committed and attached to the imposter. The imposter looks remarkably similar to Martin Guerre, but with a much sweeter, more kind disposition. (TEXT EVIDENCE HERE) The imposter is accused, by Bertrande, of not being the real Martin and thus once the real Martin Guerre comes back Bertrande leaves the man she loves and asks for forgiveness of the man who left her. At no point does Bertrande truly question any of it, it is the way customs work and she accepts this. She is a victim of her upbringing, a victim of circumstance, and a victim of social customs
The two texts examined within, present the opposing extremes of views regarding gay and lesbian marriage. The first text entitled Let Gays Marry by Andrew Sullivan examines the intricacies of same sex relationships and why homosexual couples should be allowed to publicly show affection for one another. The second text that will be examined is titled Leave Marriage Alone written by William Bennett. Bennett gives his views on why couples of same sex nature should not be allowed to engage in marital relations. These two authors, although very different, each has a view of the ideals of marriage, and how it should be presented to the public.

A History of Marriage by Stephanie Coontz speaks of the recent idealization of marriage based solely on love. Coontz doesn’t defame love, but touches on the many profound aspects that have created and bonded marriages through time. While love is still a large aspect Coontz wants us to see that a marriage needs more solid and less fickle aspects than just love.
“The Faithful Wife”, written by Barbara L. Greenberg, uses first-person narration to depict the style, language, and theme of the poem. By using first-person narration, Barbara Greenberg was able to portray events and ideas very persuasively to the reader. In addition, this first-person narrator creates dramatic irony concerning the title in reference to the body of the poem.
The Blitz Blitz, the German word for 'lightning', was applied by the British press to the tempest of heavy and frequent bombing raids carried out over Britain in 1940 and 1941. This concentrated direct bombing of industrial targets and civilian centres began on 7 September 1940, with heavy raids on London. The scale of the attack rapidly escalated. In that month alone, the German Air Force dropped 5,300 tons of high explosives on the capital in just 24 nights. In their efforts to 'soften up' the British population and to destroy morale before the planned invasion, German planes extended their targets to include the major coastal ports and centres of production and supply.

George Denis Patrick Carlin, one of the greatest political comedians of all time has been not only doing political comedy acts for years, but writing and speaking about this topic for many years as well. In his article “I’m Divorced From It Now” Carlin argues his point as to why he has lost hope in his fellows American’s and “divorced” himself from society. Carlin was a man of absolute faith, absolute patriotism, but as he aged and continued his studies on politics and religion, he slowly lost what he used to have and his views changed. His goal as a comedian was not only to bring laughter to the everyday person in his audience, but it was also to bring awareness to the current topics of the world that obviously unnoticed. This was not
Charles W. Chesnutt, in “The Wife of His Youth”, addresses the challenges biracial people face as their lives transitions “from slavery to freedom and freedom to slavery”. In the story, complexities arise when Mr. Ryder, a well-respected biracial man, tries to find his own true identity. Like other biracial in the community, he finds himself deciding whether to acknowledge his past or gain higher status in society by refusing to accept the past. After gaining freedom, Mr. Ryder worked hard to improve his life and he believes adapting the values of white Americans is only way to gain acceptance into the community. Biracial people fear that revealing their past may halt their progress in improving their status in society. However, through the story, Chesnutt implies that when biracial people refuse to accept their past, they are not being true to themselves. This prevents society from moving forward and
Famous children’s author Dr. Seuss once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind". Gay rights, at the moment, are one of the most publicized and well known controversial subjects of this decade. The sides clearly drawn one fighting for rights as simple as being married the other stating that it defames their religion and goes against the definition of marriage, being between a man and a woman. St. Paul once said, “Three things will last forever--faith, hope, and love-- and the greatest of these is love.” Throughout history, the power of faith, hope, and love have repeatedly proved themselves to be unstoppable forces that can overcome any challenge, such as the loss of a loved one. In the story “The Wife of His Youth” written by Charles W. Chesnutt, the main character, Mr. Ryder, meets Liza, a woman from his past, whose loyalty and fidelity cause a change of character. At the beginning, Mr. Ryder is portrayed as a more shallow man who has more or less selfish reasons for marrying another woman named Molly Dixon. However, throughout the duration of an exchange he has with Liza, a part of his

“It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married” (Procon.org), said Barack Obama the 44th and current president of the United States. The gay right movement started in 1969, riots, struggles, and problems followed after. In today’s society, it has been showed that people are opening up to gay rights. There has been effort in protecting the gays and discrimination against gays is now considered a hate crime and is illegal. However, gay rights still to this day struggle with state and federal legal circumstances. Same- sex marriage needs to be legal, couples who choose to be of the same-sex should be allowed to celebrate their commitment with each other the way heterosexual couples get to, both publicly and society acceptable.
