With only playing nine hundred fifteen games, having six hundred ninety goals, one thousand thirty three assist, and two retirements from hockey, you can say Mario Lemieux was a successful player. During his professional hockey career, he had many obstacles, including cancer and many injuries. Also he created a foundation to help people who have cancer and their families. He has made a big impact on the city of Pittsburgh, because of how much time, money, and effort he has put towards the city.
Born on October 5, 1965 was Mario Lemieux, but he was not born Mario Lemieux. He was born Joseph Roger Mario Lemieux. Mario is from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His parents are Jean- Guy and Pierrette Lemieux. Everyone has a nickname, so Mario is no different, …show more content…

One of his first accomplishments was in the 1984-85 season he was rewarded the Calder Memorial Trophy. That same year he was the first rookie to be named the all-star game most valuable player. In the 1987 season he was the Chrysler-Dodge/ NHL performer of the year. In the 1990-91 season he missed fifty games because he had a herniated disk. As soon as he recovered from that injury he lead the penguins into their first ever Stanley cup win. Also in 1990 he was recognized as the all-star game MVP. The 1991-92 season also had him missing many games but also winning the Stanley cup... In 1992 he got the Con Smythe trophy. In 1993 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 1993 he received the NHL Plus/Minus award. 1996 was the year that he got the Hart Memorial trophy. It would be cool to be inducted into the hockey hall of fame and that happened for Mario in the year 1997. On November 19, 1997 the legendary number sixty-six got retired. In the year 2000 ESPN named Mario the hockey player of the decade. In 2001-02 season he was named the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Also in 2002 he was an Olympic Gold Medalist. He is acknowledged as one of the best players of all time. To know that you did something that nobody else has ever done in history must be pretty cool. He created the Mario Lemieux foundation, the main cause of this foundation is to raise money for medical research projects. He has also co-founded athletes for hope. They have given Pitt medical center a five-million-dollar gift. He has also created the Austin’s playroom initiative. He created that when his son Austin was born prematurely and spent a good bit of time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and there other children didn’t have a fun place to play while they were visiting him. Their biggest success was the opening of Austin’s playroom and the Lemieux sibling playroom at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. They also have Austin’s military playroom in military hospitals. They have thirty Austin’s playrooms and three military playrooms. They have also given three million dollars to Pitt Cancer institute to establish the Mario Lemieux center for blood cancer, at the Hillman Cancer center. The foundation pairs up with ROOT sports and the Pittsburgh Penguins every year and all of the proceeds go to the Lemieux foundation as well as the Austin’s playroom project.
