She was a sex symbol of the 1950s. Her image is one of the most widely recognized in the world. Marilyn Monroe was a famous model, actress, and singer. She gained stardom for playing the dumb blonde character in her movies. Marilyn grew to become more than a skirt flying over her knees and a mysterious death. Perhaps one of the most celebrated actresses of all time. Marilyn Monroe was born, Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. She was the third child of Gladys Baker a flapper and negative film cutter for Consolidated Film Industries. Soon after her birth, she was placed with foster parents Albert and Ida Bolender. She was discovered while working at a Radio Plane Munitions factory during the second world war. While working at the factory she was photographed for the Yank magazine and the popularity of her photos launched her modeling career. On August 26, 1946 Marilyn signed a contract with 20th Century Fox, thus launching her acting career. During her time with Fox she was cast for 2 films; resulting in Fox not wanting to renew her contract. Marilyn returned to modeling until she was picked up by Columbia Pictures. Shortly after signing with Columbia, she was dropped, and returned to her modeling career once again. In 1949 Marilyn appeared in “Love Happy” and it was also the same year she posed nude for a calendar. In 1953 her career was further boosted when the nude photos of her were published in Playboy; making her the first center fold in the magazines history. Over the next two years Monroe made some of her most famous movies like “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “River of No Return”. Marilyn also, went on tour with the USO in 1954, traveling to Korea to perform for soldiers. Over the next two years Marilyn would become a major movie star. However, on August 5, 1962 Marilyn was found dead in her California home, from a barbiturate overdose. Till this day her death is still a mystery, some say that it was a accidental overdose, others think it was suicide, and some even wonder
