Marijuana Should Not be Legalized for Recreational Use I believe that the legalization of marijuana for recreational use would do more harm than good. Not only does it have the potential to cause dependency, but studies have shown that it can cause functional impairment in mental abilities, and that it is a “gateway drug.” I believe that these negative aspects far outweigh their positive counterparts. I do, however, believe that marijuana should be legal for medical use. Marijuana is already the most common illicit drug in the United States, especially among young people. On top of that, more people are beginning to believe that it has no adverse side effects. This, however, is not the case. While the information about the potential harm marijuana use can cause is freely available on government websites, the movement to decriminalize it is far more vocal. This is causing more and more young people to learn only the positive side of …show more content…
Marijuana, in the long term, negatively impacts brain development. A study has shown that people who began smoking marijuana heavily in their teenage years and continued throughout their life have lost, on average, eight IQ points between ages 13 and 38. Long term marijuana use also negatively impacts memory, learning capabilities, and the way that the brain builds connections between its different areas. These same effects remain, even if the person stop smoking marijuana as adults. Marijuana abuse also creates a host of physical problems for the user. Smoke from marijuana can damage the throat and lungs of users in a way very similar to cigarettes. These effects include coughing, an increased risk of lung infections, and more frequent lung related illness. Marijuana use during pregnancy is also increases that chances that the child will have brain and behavioral problems. These problems include a shorter attention span, reduced memory, and problem solving

First of all, some people feel smoking marijuana can get hyper, which providing them the emotion of happiness, and helping them to see the world from a different perspective. However, marijuana will cause a lot of healthy problems to human’s body. Marijuana has many physical effects on human such as rapid heart rate, red eyes and dry mouth. Because the chemical THC will enter into the body when people are smoking it, THC will enter through the bloodstream to the brain. In conclusion Marijuana has positive effects on both society and the wellbeing of individuals and should be legalized. It would be a logical decision for the government to legalize Marijuana due to the fact that firstly the government can monitor and tax Marijuana thus helping the economy. Secondly Marijuana can be used as medical therapy; thirdly there would be less youth and adults in jails and prisons. Point in fact the government would be able to manage all facets about Marijuana as follows price, importation and exportation and diminishing any drug cartels/markets. Additionally youth would not be prosecuted with possession of cannabis and fear an undetermined future. Lastly the positives incidentally outweigh the negatives over this concerning topic and thus a monumental decisions to legalize Marijuana.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse marijuana causes the user to feel euphoric by acting on the brain’s reward system. The euphoria is caused by the release of dopamine it to the user system. Other effects can include heightened sensory perception (e.g., brighter colors), laughter, altered perception of time, and increased appetite. Marijuana also inhibits the formation of new memories and causes coordination and balance to be degraded. These reactions are caused by binding the receptors in the cerebellum and base ganglia. Some believe marijuana is bad for your mental health and can be addictive. John Hawkins author of 5 Reasons Marijuana Should Remain Illegal, made good points about it affecting our mental health. Hawkins referenced a study done by Northwestern University; the study shows that frequent users of marijuana have a different brain structure than individuals, who don’t use it. Habitual use can lead to poor memory retention and may cause changes in the brain that can resemble schizophrenia. The report also shows that the younger a person starts smoking marijuana the worse the affects can be (Hawkins). According to Sabrina Richards author of Is Cannabis Really That Bad? Studies have indicated that individuals who are under the influence of marijuana show a greater chance of partaking in risky behavior. The effects of long-term use may cause extreme anxiety, panic attacks, and some believe it can even cause schizophrenia.
It reduces the IQ of an individual. People who smoke marijuana do not have a normal brain structure, and their memory is poor. According to a study at Northwestern University, the marijuana user’s brain has changes that make it look like schizophrenia. Marijuana has worse effects on the brain when people start using it while young. The cannabis destroys the neurocognitive performance of youth. It leads to psychological problems, increased moods, and anxiety. Marijuana impairs people’s judgment and leads to high crime rates. People who smoke marijuana are also less successful in life than people who don’t smoke. Many of them drop out of schools and even loose relationships because other people don’t want to be associated with people who smoke it (Hawkins,
Marijuana has a greater beneficial impact on society then many people realize. Marijuana should be legalized for medical as well as recreational purposes. This is a highly controversial issue that is being debated throughout the country. In essence marijuana is evaluated by the effectiveness of the drug. It is defined as the dried flowered clusters and leaves of a hemp plant smoked for the intoxicating effect. Whether it should be legalized or not is the real question.

People usually abuse marijuana by becoming addicted and smoking it just because instead of using it for their well-being. I went around and asked about ten people I know who have been smoking for at least five years. When I asked them if they had ever experienced memory problems, learning difficulties, trouble with problem solving and loss of muscle activity and addictive capability, they responded, “If anything, marijuana enhances my memory.” “I would not be able to learn in school if I did not smoke.” “The only problem I had, was being addicted to marijuana, but it was all in my head because when I finally stopped smoking, I had no withdrawal symptoms.” The only side effect that seemed to be accurate when asking these questions was the addictive properties. Although being addicted to marijuana mentally can be a problem, all of the many positive side effects of marijuana outweigh the one negative side effect that seems to be the most
It is important to be informed of what we are defending, and in this case it is to not legalize drugs. One may ask, what are drugs? Drugs are chemicals, that may affect your body in many different ways, whether it be good or bad. However, most of the time, it 's not always a positive outcome. Some drugs even leave lifetime damage to your brain and body. Although, there are many different ways to take drugs, some of the most common ways are; inhalation, ingestion, and injection. All three ways, however affect the body differently. You don 't always know what you are ingesting or injecting and even inhaling. Most of the time, because drugs are illegal, they are sold through drug dealers
