Whether it is listening to or creating it, music is a universally loved pastime. Over the years music has evolved in numerous revolutionary ways. There are many different genres to explore. Each decade has its own unique sound. The 1950’s is known for rock and roll. The 1970’s is fondly remembered for soul music. The 1990’s were a very creative and experimental time in music history. Many beloved artists started their musical journey in the 90’s. One prominent legend from the time is Mariah Carey. At the time she was universally loved for her strong vocals. Overall she has scored 18 number ones making her the second artist with the most number one singles, right behind the legendary rock group, The Beatles(“Mariah Carey’s Top 40 Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits” 2018). In total she had six of her albums top the Billboard 200(“Mariah Carey Chart History” Billboard). Her album sales are among some of the best selling in history. “Her best-selling album of her career is 1993's "Music Box" with 28 million and 1995's "Daydream" isn't far behind with 25 million, both are listed as one of the best-selling albums of all time” (“Mariah Carey celebrates 20 years” 2010). Mariah’s work was so loved that when she covered The Jackson Five’s song “I’ll Be There” her live recording went number one. (“Mariah Carey Chart History” Billboard). One of her biggest accomplishments is how successful her duet with Boyz II Men became. The heartfelt ballad One Sweet Day topped the billboard hot 100 for 16 consecutive weeks. She is credited with making melisma mainstream. Melisma is a singing style in which a group of notes is sung to one syllable of a text. Because of Mariah melisma is a common singing style that is often found while watching shows such as American Idol and The Voice. “...It was Mariah—with her jaw-dropping range—who made it into America’s default sound. The remix featured ODB, a rapper from the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan. In this song, she fused elements of pop and hip-hop. Since this collaboration, it has become common for many other pop artists to have a rap verse on their songs. Three popular songs on the Billboard Hot 100 today that use this style are “Finesse” by Bruno Mars and Cardi B, “Havana” by Camila Cabello featuring Young Thug, and “Pray For Me” by The Weeknd featuring Kendrick Lamar.
