Sam Houston was a great man in our history. He stood up for what he believed was good for the Union not the North or the South. When Sam was rebuked for providing the winning margin for his opponents he said “I know neither North nor South; I know only the Union.” He also said everyone “…must stand firm to the Union, regardless of all personal consequences.” He was fiercely ambitious, yet at the end he sacrificed for principle all he had ever won or wanted. He was a Southerner, and yet he steadfastly maintained his loyalty to the Union. He could be all things to all men—and yet, when faced with his greatest challenge, he was faithful to himself and to Texas.

Written by Randolph B. Campbell and edited by Mark C. Carnes, Sam Houston and the American Southwest tells the story of the life of Sam Houston. Sam Houston, born in 1793 in Tennessee, was a soldier, lawyer, and also one of the founding fathers of the state of Texas. This biography of Sam Houston goes on to describe the life of Sam Houston in topics such as presidential elections he ran in, wars he has fought, friends and rivals of Houston, his personal life, marriages, wins, defeats, and changes he brought upon the United States of America. Sam Houston was liked by the majority of people, he looked up to Andrew Jackson who was his general when Sam Houston joined the army in his 20’s. This book goes into depth to portray to the reader of the type of person Sam Houston was including his strengths, weaknesses, and the fact that he was an alcoholic and despite all that, he was a very intelligent and noble man of U.S. history as we now know.
Sam Houston was as legend reports a big man about six foot and six inches tall. He was an exciting historical figure and war hero who was involved with much of the early development of our country and Texas. He was a soldier, lawyer, politician, businessman, and family man, whose name will be synonymous with nation heroes who played a vital part in the shaping of a young and prosperous country. He admired and supported the Native Americans who took him in and adopted him into their culture to help bridge the gap between the government and a noble forgotten race. Sam Houston succeeded in many roles he donned as a man, but the one most remembered is the one of a true American hero.
Sam Houston and the Allen brothers created a great historic city with many cultural attractions. It has hot weather, but that doesn’t stop Houstonians from enjoying their city’s many attractions.

Sam Houston was one of the most important person in the entire history of Texas. If he did not participate in the war Mexico might not have won. There would have been a lot more casualties and the war might have been longer. Sam was a brilliant leader who led Texas to victory. This essay will be a biography of Sam Houston and will go into detail about what made him such a great leader.
Houston is one of the most famous historical figures in Texas history. Many students will have some knowledge regarding Sam Houston since majority of the people in Texas know what Houston is mostly known for. The book, Great Americans: Sam Houston, is an informational book that provides the background information and how he was considered a great American. This book is great for elementary school readers since it provides concise information about him in an easy to understand way. The book mostly goes over Houston’s life and accomplishments prior to him becoming the General that lead the Texas army. It is only pages 13 to 21 where to book mentions his involvement in the Texas Revolution and accomplishments in Texas. When it does talk about the Texas Revolution, it only mentions his involvement in the battle of San Jacinto (arguably his most important battle) where his small army faced off against the large Mexican army and the won in an instant. To me, I think the book could have provided more background information about Houston during the Texas Revolution because he was also a part of other important battles, but since this book is an introduction to Sam Houston it just provides what is most important about him. The book also does a great job on providing information on Houston serving as the president of the Republic of Texas. Student’s will get the necessary information they need to know about Sam
Margaret Lucas Cavendish was born into a wealthy family located near Colchester, England. Margaret was the youngest child of eight children and was loved just as dearly as the rest. She like most her siblings took on education with a governess and learned what they needed to get by in the world. Unlike her other siblings Margaret showed signs of admiration towards reading and writing, but more towards her writings. While in her youth she managed to write sixteen of what she called her “Baby Books”, the shortest of which consisted of 50-75 pages of written work. It was at this point that she found her passion for the written word.
