Margaret Askew Fell Fox
In the seventeenth century, a commanding female public minister emerged during the radical religious movement of Quakerism. Margaret Askew Fell Fox was one of the founding members of the Religious Society of Friends, and was popularly known as the "Mother of Quakerism". She has been known less as a minister and more as a founder and provider of financial support then other young women. Throughout this paper I will refer to her as Fell Fox, name she acquired through marriages during her lifetime. Through her struggles and triumphs, radical actions and beliefs, and her desire to worship God, Fell Fox had a significant impact on the world around her. In this essay, I hope to share how Fell Fox’s life, writings, and actions contributed to her radical contribution to life in seventeenth century England.
In 1614, Fell Fox was born in Lancashire, England. She was born into the landed gentry, a level of society with both good education and breeding. In her late teens, she married an older man, a highly respected judge, by the name of Thomas Fell. Fell was politically involved in the society and several times was a member of Parliament. During their marriage, Fell inherited a house from his father and he and Margaret lived at the estate. The estate had been named Swarthmoor Hall by Fell’s father. During that time, Fell was often away from home on court circuits. Fell was well known in the region for his hospitality to travelers, and accordingly, the Hall was open to travelers. Fell Fox followed her husband’s desire for hospitality.
In June 1652, George Fox came to Swarthmoor while Fell was away on a circuit. (Fox was later credited with being the founder of the Quakers.) When Fell returned home, Fell Fox and their nine children were no longer attending their community Anglican Church. Instead, Fell Fox had deeply involved her family and herself in the “Principle and Persuasion” that was introduced to her through Fox. We have later learned that the moment Fell Fox met Fox, she changed her religious alliance. From the copious use of examples in Winthrop's work, and the concise detail in Rowlandson's narrative, one can imbibe such Puritans values as the mercy of God, place in society, and community. Together, these three elements create a foundation for Puritan thought and lifestyle in the New World. Though A Model of Christian Charity is rather prescriptive in its discussion of these values, Rowlandson's captivity narrative can certainly be categorized as descriptive; this pious young woman serves as a living example of Winthrop's "laws," in that she lives the life of a true Puritan. Therefore, both 17th century works are extremely interrelated; in order to create Winthrop's model community, one must have faith and closely follow Puritan ideals, as Rowlandson has effectively done in her A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.

He explains that though extraordinary opportunities reveal themselves in many ways, they all have the same effect: they allow the individual to get ahead. According to Gladwell, sometimes these opportunities build up until they are no longer single accidents. He illustrates the concept of gifted programs to support his claim. Teachers select promising students for the programs in hopes of maximizing their potential, and unsurprisingly, these students learn more and advance above their classmates—an advantage that continues to accumulate year after year (Gladwell 29). However, a study by Bedard and Dhuey reveals that these students are often perceived as more intelligent than their peers simply because they are more mature (28). The students that aren’t as mature are consequently denied an important, critical opportunity in their education. Gladwell presents the Canadian Hockey League system as another example: after young players are separated into teams according to their skill level, the most talented players receive better training and more practice time (25). Although it appears that this process is fairly based on ability, Gladwell emphasizes that hockey coaches make the same mistake that teachers do in the classroom—they unknowingly choose the most physically mature players (24-25).
The Sovereignty and Goodness of God is a primary source document written in the 17th century, by a well-respected, Puritan woman. This book, written in cahoots with Cotton and Increase Mather, puritan ministers, tells the story of her capture by Indians during King Phillip’s War (1675-1676). For three months, Mary Rowlandson, daughter of a rich landowner, mother of three children, wife of a minister, and a pillar of her community lived among “savage” Indians. This document is important for several reasons. First, it gives us insight into the attitudes, extremes, personalities and “norms” of the Puritan people we learn about in terms of their beliefs, and John Calvin’s “house on a hill”. Beyond that, despite the inevitable exaggerations, this book gives us insight into Indian communities, and how they were run and operated during this time.
In this play the character blanche exhibits the theme of illusion. Blanche came from a rocky past. Her young husband killed himself and left her with a big space in her heart to fill. Blanche tried to fill this space with the comfort of strangers and at one time a young boy. She was forced to leave her hometown. When she arrives in New Orleans, she immediately begins to lie and give false stories. She takes many hot bathes, in an effort to cleanse herself of her past. Blanche tries also to stay out of bright lights. She covers the light bulb (light=reality) in the apartment with a paper lantern. This shows her unwillingness to face reality but instead live in an illusion. She also describes how she tells what should be the truth. This is a sad excuse for covering/lying about the sinful things she has done. Furthermore, throughout the story she repeatedly drinks when she begins to be faced with facts. All these examples, covering light, lying, and alcoholism show how she is not in touch with reality but instead living in a fantasy world of illusion.
Many authors like Aldous Huxley have come to state that “ignorance is bliss” in their own manners. In A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, this message is passed on down to the audience through the characterization of Blanche DuBois. Blanche is a character who had her fall from grace. Coming from a rich family, she lost all of her wealth; and, thus, came to live with her sister, Stella. However, mentally, she still lives in the past. In other words, she’s ignorant of the present. This ignorance comes to be the foundation of her character.

In Tennessee Williams' play, A Streetcar Named Desire, Williams uses the suicide of Blanche's husband to illuminate Blanche's insecurities and immoral behavior. When something terrible happens to someone, it often reveals who he or she truly is. Blanche falls victim to this behavior, and she fails to face her demons. This displays how the play links a character’s illogical choices and their inner struggles.

Oscar Wilde had once said, "Illusion is the first of all pleasures." This is ultimately true in the case of Blanche DuBois. Throughout the play of "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams, the illusion of Blanche DuBois creates the emotional, tragic, and often extreme circumstances of the play. Succumbed to grief, Blanche has lost touch with reality. Beneath her illusions of social arrogance and sexual propriety, Blanche DuBois is a deceptive and insecure individual. Williams' includes Blanche's greatest vulnerability, her inability to face reality, along with her haunting past and cruel, animalistic treatment to become the primary cause of her promiscuity, ill-minded behavior, and ultimate downfall. Blanche DuBois lives life through illusions to escape reality.
