Margaret Atwood is a famous author and poet born November 18, 1931, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Atwood wrote popular books and poems such as The Handmaid’s Tale, The Edible Woman, and “Two-Headed Poems''. Atwood used her book The Handmaid’s Tale to show her opinion on feminists and used events in her life and the world to help shape her writing style for her books and poems. Margaret Atwood published her book, The Handmaid’s Tale, in 1985. During this period, women were still trying to gain more rights. Atwood used her book to represent a world broken down by women after they attempted to surpass men in power. In her article, Shirley Newman said that Atwood described the Republic of Gilead as “one logical outcome of what she termed the ‘strict theocracy’ of the ‘fundamentalist government’ of the United States Puritan founding fathers,”(Newman). …show more content…

She purposely based it on this period where women were Handmaids, Marthas, or Wives; showing that women would be reduced to nothing again. While discussing her book Atwood said “‘If practical, hardline, anti-male feminists took over and became the government, I would resist them’”(Newman). Margaret did not classify herself as a feminist but stood for women's rights. According to Shirley Newman, Atwood said during an interview that her definition of a feminist was “‘A belief in the rights of women.as equal human beings”(Newman). She believed women and men should be equal and not one having more power or rights over the other (Newman). Margaret Atwood was born and raised in Canada. Atwood was home-schooled for a while and during her time she spent most of her time outside with nature. Atwood, although starting public school at eight and having less schooling, quickly excelled.
