Europe was a place in need if inspiration around the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Marco Polo is one of the most well-known heroic travelers and traders around the world.
In 1214, Marco Polo was born into a wealthy Venetion family in Venice Italy (Marco Polo). He was the son of Niccolo and Nicole Polo (Hoyt). He also was an only child (Hoyt). His mother raised Marco, until she passed away sometime during his childhood and an aunt and uncle then raised him (Marco Polo). They were wealthy and he learned many important things like foreign currency and appraising (Marco Polo). His father and Uncle Maffeo returned to Venice in 1269. It was only then that fifteen year old Marco finally met Niccolo, the father he never knew he had (History.com).
Marco’s father and his uncle journeyed in China where they joined a diplomatic to the court of Kublai Khan the Mongol leader whose grandfather Genghis Khan, had conquered Northwest Asia (Marco Polo). Khan had expressed his interest in Christianity and asked the Polo brothers to visit again with 100 priests and a collection of holy water (History.com). Khans Empire, the largest the world has ever seen, was large to those living within the borders of the Holy Roman Empire (Marco Polo). The Polo brothers described it being unfathomable (Donn).
In 1271, Niccolo and Maffeo Polo set out for Asia again, but this time they brought young Marco with them (Marco Polo). Unable to recruit the 100 priests that Khan had requested, they soon turned back because of the hard journey (Lewis). The Polo’s journey took place on land, and they were forced to cut through challenging and harsh territory (Donn). Marco Polo had a long fulfilled life. He is still popular today for his travels and everything he did, and saw. He became great friends with Khan, and he is now known as one of the most heroic travelers ever.
