In the novel Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco Stork, the main character exits his comfort zone and takes on some responsibilities at his father's law firm, through his interactions with various people he realizes being uncomfortable and trying new things leads to personal growth. Marcelo’s autism spectrum disorder caused him to be a generally shy and sheltered person who became very accustomed to learning at his own pace and always having help when he needed it whether it was emotionally or mentally. Taking on a job at the law firm meant Marcelo had to exit these comfort zones he became so familiar with and when self reflecting on his thoughts about his discussion with Wendell, Marcelo states “Despite hours of practicing at Paterson, initiating "small talk" is still a formidable challenge for me. Marcelo never had much to worry about besides a small job at Paterson taking care of the horses. Before Marcelo takes the law firm job, Arturo tells Marcelo that "The corporate world has its rules. The law firm has its rules…The real world as a whole has its rules. The rules deal with behaviors and the way to do things in order to be successful." (Stork 21). At this point in time Marcelo realizes he will have to adapt to the real world and take on the responsibilities given to him. Arturo explains to Marcelo that “Paterson adapted to your learning speed and if you needed more time you got it.” (Stork 22) and in the real world your responsibilities are to be followed on strict deadlines. Marcelo knew he was going to make a big change in his life and things were going to be a lot different. This makes Marcelo uncomfortable as he first starts his job but after feeling this for a while and learning as he went, Marcelo became a more responsible and reliable young
