Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Twenty-seven years on and The Montreal Massacre still stands as the worst mass shooting in the name of misogyny. Shooter Marc Lepine acted his perverse fantasy to punish all of the feminists by killing fourteen nursing students at The École Polytechnique. In his suicide note, Lepine rails against feminism and claims that feminists “ruined his life.” He listed the names of 19 area women he intended to kill for the crime of just being feminists. His attack on The École Polytechnique began in the nursing school. Lepine separated male and female students from each other. He shot nine female students at close range, calling his victims “a bunch of feminists.” The gunman then roamed the hallways, going into another classroom
and the cafeteria, looking for more women to shoot. In just under twenty minutes, Lepine mowed down an additional twenty-four victims. Fourteen young women lost their lives that day, everyone else would go on to survive their injuries. Like most mass shooters, Lepine was an unmarried, young man with difficulty committing to a school program or career. His choice of The École Polytechnique was highly personal as the school had twice rejected his applications for lacking the required coursework. His father was an Algerian businessman who raged against women and beat his mother, a Canadian nurse. After the divorce, his father virtually abandoned the family. His mother was forced to return to her nursing career full-time just to support her two young children. Marc would only see his mother on the weekends while other families cared for him and his sister during the week. He took his mother's name and resented having Middle Eastern heritage. Somehow Lepine desired his father’s presence so much, he overcompensated by expanding on his own hatred for women. Instead of coming home and beating his wife the nurse, Lepine went out and killed nurses.
A non-guilty verdict in the murder trial of Bradley Barton accused of killing Cree mother of three Cindy Gladue who bled to death from an eleven centimetre internal laceration argues that the wound was the result of rough sex. Gladue known in Edmonton as a sex worker spent two night with Barton in an Edmonton hotel room in June 2011. This essay will argue the appeal that was warranted through looking firstly at feminist analyses of sexual assault and legal consent, secondly, the contexts of intersectional power relations/ interlocking oppressions such as Gladue being a women from a Cree nationality who works as a sex worker, thirdly the problematic notion of Gladue being the bearer
Not long after Dianne Lavigne’s murder on June 26th 1997, the perpetrators began to receive the penalties of their actions. Stephane Gagne, who was a shooter in both murders, was arrested on December 5th 1997. He pleaded guilty to Dianne’s murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He cut a deal with the prosecution where he received 140$ a month for privileges in prison and 400$ a month for his son. In exchange, he agreed to be the main witness for the first-degree murder trail against “Mom” Boucher for both murders in 2002 . Tousignant, who was the second shooter in the murder, was told by Boucher to lay low. Instead, he got involved in a drunken argument at a saloon that raised concerns of him being a loose cannon. Boucher took precautions to ensure that he would not be another snitch used in his trial and on December 6th of 1997 called “Touts” in. He was later found February 7th 1998 near Bromont fingerless and scorched with several bullet wounds . Boucher was first tried in 1998 for masterminding the assassinations a...
In the article “The Seven Minute Life of Marc Lepine”, we see Lepine as a victim. We cannot help but to sympathize with him because of the struggles he endured throughout his youth. He was in and out of the hospital for therapy with his mother and sister after being repeatedly beaten by their father for years. The movie “Polytechnique” depicts his life during the introduction. We gain an insight into his life. The audience sees that Lepine is lonely, quiet and holds a lot of suppressed anger, especially towards feminists. In his suicide letter, he expresses his reasons for hating feminists and writes how feminists ruined his life. This letter explains what turned his anger and hate into murder.
“On Sept. 27, 1990, Mehrdad Dashti, a deranged man carrying three concealed handguns, walked into a popular U.C.-Berkeley hangout. Twenty minutes later, he opened fire, injuring many people and killing one. Ultimately, the incident became an eight-hour siege during which 33 people were held hostage.”
John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo are two murderers that are known as the Beltway Sniper. Muhammad and Malvo killings are known to be random, which categorizes their killings as a killing spree. During the duration of their killing spree, they caused major panic throughout the United States. This notorious shootings that terrorized the United States took place in 2002. The shootings ended up taking the lives of 10 individuals and injuring 3 others (Blades, 2005, para.1). The shooting at the time it took place is considered unique because their weapon of choice to carry out their plan was a sniper rifle. What is unique about this case is that investigators and criminal theorist
The deadliest school shooting to have ever happened in the United States at a high school or grade school, happened less than two years ago. On December 14th, 2012, Adam Lanza, who was twenty years old at the time, shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, four times and then brought firearms to his former grade school Sandy Hook Elementary, and fatally shot twenty children and six adults. Then the shooter put his own gun to his head and fatally shot himself. All of the children were between the ages of six and seven years old, and all six adults who were shot and killed were females who worked at the school. Lanza's father believed that if he were there himself, his son would have had no trouble shooting and killing him too.
School shootings seemed like a new phenomenon, but they occurred for the majority of American history. The first school shooting occurred On July 26, 1764, when a Lenape Indian shot and killed nine children and the school master of the Greencastle, Pennsylvania school (Galvin): as noted in Appendix A. Since 1764, the number of school shootings rose exponentially. In the 1990’s, eighty-six school shootings occurred and between 2000 and 2014, 110 shootings transpired since 2000 (Killam,2008). The development of semiautomatic weapons lead to an increase in deaths. A study conducted in 1990 found through the years of 1986 to 1990; 71 people died, 201 wounded, and 242 people held hostage by school shooters(Galvin). While the area a school serves as one factor in the number of violent acts committed per year, school shootings have not been connected to this. The schools in Chicago dealt with more violent acts, but Sandy Hook Elementary, a small city school had relatively few violent acts committed by students.
In June of 2016, the deadliest mass shooting in the United States happens at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In the aftermath of Sunday morning when covering the shooting, News 13 a local news channel from Orlando used pathos in their news to create fear about terrorism to the audience. On the other hand, The New York Times used eyewitness videos and expert interviews to appeal logic.
Sometimes, in order to have justice in this world, violent actions need to be taken to be able to get a point across and fight for what is fundamentally right. In today’s society, feminism is viewed as a non-violent way of having the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. However, it was not always like that. In order to have the level of equality modern societies have today, daring and sometimes violent things took place. A case in point being the Suffragette movement in the early 20th century. Over the years, the Suffragettes faced many challenges and winning feats such as being granted their right to vote federally, but their actions and the actions taken by one of their most successful groundbreakers, Thérèse Casgrain, are the reason why women can now be treated equally in Canadian society.
Consequently, “In recent years, tragedies involving mass killings in the US, such as The Aurora, CO movie theatre shooting in July 2012, and the Newton, CT has intensified social focus on trying to understand the dynamics and contributing factors that underlie such events”(Towers 2). Both of these shooting left the public shocked and concerned. As an article says one of the main concerns was “concern with the publics understanding of the shooting specifically who or what did the public blame” (Joslyn, and Do...
In the article, clearly it's spoken a lot about LaDue, the young man who wanted to join the riot, it also discusses a lot about other school shootings that
April twentieth, 1999 was just another Tuesday for many people. But for the students attending Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado it was the day that two of their classmates opened fire on them. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, seniors at Columbine High School, murdered twelve students and one teacher and injured twenty-four others. After executing their plan, the two committed suicide. These two teenagers conducted, “the deadliest high school shooting in US history.”
SWOOSH. That’s all I hear in a gym full of 100 or more screaming fans and the sound of the buzzer going off as if it was never going to stop. As I laid on the ground gasping for air, I came to my senses that I just hit the game winning shot against Tates Creek high School with 3.7 seconds left. This shot was the shot of my career but who would of knew 7 years prior to that shot that I would of became a top rated shooting guard in the city of Lexington, Kentucky. My whole basketball career all I’ve known is to shoot a basketball jump shot, that was my duty, my job, my responsibility but never did I feel I was mechanically doing my whole life’s work wrong.
One spring day April 20, 1999 to be exact, a school named Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado was under assault by two of its own students. Within fifteen minutes of the first lunch period, two students carrying weapons killed thirteen and wounded twenty one classmates before they turned the guns on themselves, becoming one of the most disturbing school shooting in U.S. history. This generation comes from aggression, hate, and ignorance, the three principal factors that cause school shootings. High school is a place where bullying, teasing, intimidation, humiliation, disapproval, physical abuse and social isolation are an everyday occurrence.
...n character's life is her murder. Although he kills her in a fit of rage, and not in any premeditated fashion, he shows no remorse while she lies dead in the cellar. His only concern is the removal of her body. The Feminist critic would view this as an attack on the value of the wife's life. Of course there is no way of knowing how Poe wished the audience to see the wife, but it is very likely that she serves no other purpose than to link the black cat to the main character's demise. This view alone would offend the feminist critic who views the wife as a much more integral part of the story.
