While the Maple Counseling Center intake form appears quite lengthy, the majority of the questions can be answered by placing a check mark in the appropriate box. This enables the client to reflect on his/her behavior without requiring a detailed response for each question. From there, the practitioner will be able to ask appropriate questions and follow up on areas of concern during the intake meeting. still being accessible to all clients. The Maple Counseling Center does a good job of making the language on the intake form accessible to the majority of clients. While some clients, depending on education and literacy levels, may struggle with words such as “euphoric”, “fluctuate”, “compulsive”, methamphetamines”, “opiates”, and “sedatives”, these terms can be easily explained and clarified by staff members. Additionally, if a client is unfamiliar with a couple of words, it will only prohibit him/her from answering that particular question. Each question that the client is required to answer stands alone and can be understood out of context from the other questions.

The intake process may vary based on the clinical setting from structured to unstructured models, each with the same core and theme of collective information that is customarily gathered. The effectiveness of the initial intake interviews are a reflection of balance between gathering information and developing a therapeutic working alliance (Whiston, 2009). Furthermore, “Research indicates that to become effective in intake interviewing so that a working alliance is fostered, counselors need to follow guidelines and receive training to obtain accurate and valid information” (Duley, Cancelli, Kratochwill, Bergan & Meredith, 1983). Training to be a therapist or counselor is stressful and involves significant shifts in identity, self-knowledge and confidence. Most of these changes appear to be linked to starting work with clients (Edwards & Patterson, 2012). The practicum or clinical experience portion of a therapist or counselor’s training is arguably the most important part of the program. It is also one of the most stressful and overwhelming times in a therapist trainee’s academic career. Trainees’ clinical internships involve multiple challenges; developing competence with clients is only one challenge that beginning practicum students face. To some extent I feel comfortable being a non-professional counselor. I obtain the characteristics of being a good listener and being able to empathize with others.
