School uniforms are becoming a popular movement among schools in the United States. School uniforms have both pros and cons. After looking at several articles on the pros and cons of school uniforms, it seems that each side has many important aspects; however, it is questionable if there is really a “right” answer to forcing students to wear a uniform. It seems that the question should be, should schools make students and families go through the trouble of enforcing school uniforms? All schools, staff, student environment and communities are different. Each school will have to look into its own situation and decide what the real value of wearing a school uniform could be to their students.
According to Richard Daughterty, school uniforms

Pessimistic people say that uniforms are not responsible for decreased violence, that students will find another way to compete, and that uniforms have no direct bearing on academic achievement. For an example, students could still compete with their clothing. Even though their clothes are all the same color and look alike does not mean all the clothes cost the same. This is an example of a high school student school uniform cost. The cheapest outfit would probably be around $30. You would need at least three complete outfits for the week. The only downside is that parents would have to wash clothes more often. (Kalkstein, Yasmine L.) One student could have bought his polo shirt or a button up collared shirt, khakis, and dress shoes at Walmart, but another student could go to Dillards and buy Polo Ralph Lauren clothes. He bought the same thing as the other student, but it is a different brand and from another store. His school uniform could cost anywhere from $150 to $200, so school uniforms do not keep students from competing at whose clothes are better (Brusma, David …show more content…
This will allow them to decorate their school uniforms in whatever way they can and stop the possibility of envying what other students have. The students would be happier and every teenager loves a good challenge. School uniforms would help students get in contact with their inner creativity and help them to style their uniforms. They could decorate their school uniforms in any way they want as long as it is not a huge drastic change. It can be as simple as wearing different ties everyday, adding random buttons, or bedazzling them. My reflection on the controversial issue regarding if more schools should start using uniforms is a positive one. Some choices regarding the uniform dress code would cause students to be happier. School uniforms would help all students express themselves and their personalities in different ways. School uniforms give schools the opportunity to have some structure and control regarding how the school is represented if students wore them. I feel that by allowing students to have some say so in expressing themselves it might lead to students making better choices both socially and
As unnecessary, to most students, as it may seem, school uniforms can actually carry a lot of potent. According to a bulletin produced by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, it stated that “When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork.” Students do not have to emphasize on what to wear to school each day; they tend to focus more on their education rather than to learn who is wearing the latest fashion trend. Students may start to digress to a point where they are even clueless about what they had learned during their entire school year. It is saddening to realize that these students would prioritize their clothing over their education instead. Providing uniforms to the students would have a tremendous effect over these students and the school systems. Students would not have to spend great amounts of money on clothing in order to receive the praise or attention of their friends and/or family; vice-versa, students who don’t have the money to afford the latest clothing will not have to suffer the gossips of their poor taste of
Today, there are numerous controversies about wearing school uniforms. Some people believe that wearing uniforms can help to eliminate unproductive behaviors, while others believe that wearing uniforms help individuals in developing their identity through liberal expression. In the article “Disadvantages & Advantages of High Schools Adopting Dress Codes,” Maria Ocadiz, effectively presents the pros and cons of wearing school uniforms.
Hence the fact that although there are some cons pertaining to this issue, after doing a significant amount of research I have come to the conclusion that the positives outweigh the negatives. I think that wearing school uniforms will bring a great sense of satisfaction to the all parties. It is up to us to do what is right for our children. If we have found one solution to eliminate the problems that most students are facing today, such as bullying, costs etc., why not take advantage of it. We all want what is best for our children. School uniforms might not be the solution to mend students’ academic reading, writing, and math proficiency, but it aids in addressing part of the problem with regulations and attendance.
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms in pre-K through high school levels is an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be adopted. Opposition is always a factor when trying to make changes. Taking all things into consideration, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents.
Whether people like it or not, uniforms are here to stay in modern society. They are seen everywhere, from schools to policemen. Uniforms are a requirement for life. In professional work settings and careers they are expected. On this basis, why wouldn't they be used in a school setting? School uniforms prepares children for their futures. Parents and elders are filled with pride when they see the future generations in clothing that highlights their intelligence. Any issues with them, such as expense, expression, and their actual classroom effects, are easily solved. More schools should require uniforms. As it is, the trend is growing with one in five schools wearing uniforms (“Are School...”).
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
“We cannot forget that reinforcing economic differences drives students further apart when schools should be drawing them closer together.” There are many problems in public schools with no uniforms. The use of school uniforms could eliminate some of these problems. Although school uniforms may take away a child’s individuality, there are more benefits than disadvantages to having school uniforms in public schools because school uniforms lessen the money spent on the latest fashion trends and school uniforms provide a positive school climate. A school uniform should be a simple outfit.
Bill Clinton once said, “People will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require students to wear school uniforms.” Public schools across America are searching to improve safety, school belonging and also help parents save money & students save time getting ready. One way to improve these issues would be to implement a uniform policy. The adoption of school uniforms policies will reach what public schools across America are searching for.
Studies have been done on how school uniforms create a better and safe environment for students and teachers. However there is contradictory about this issue because of the lack of information and other changes that might have happened at the same time as the uniform policy was being integrated. This may be difficult to single out one change that was added to the school system. Schools are believed to take away opportunities for the students to realize diversity and socioeconomic gap between students as stated by (Fossey and DeMitchell). Authors with both sides of the argument for and against school uniforms who were key components to the forming of this article are Keith A King in “Should School Uniforms be Mandated In Elementary Schools?”,
While many private schools mandate uniforms for their students there is an ongoing debate on whether public schools should follow in the footsteps. Public schools see many benefits in adapting uniforms. Having uniforms in schools creates a safer learning environment for students. While creating a safer learning environment it also reduces violence in schools. Implementing uniforms will also increase the focus on learning and education.
Currently in America an on going debate continues regarding a uniform policy suggested to public and private schools. This develops into a controversial issue because valid argument exist on both sides. Giving this issue much thought has lead me to believe that making school uniforms mandatory would help the school systems. School uniforms would help unruly classrooms, also students would not have to buy expensive clothes and students would not get killed over tennis shoes. Schools that have adopted uniforms have reported several advantages.
Uniforms provide students with school uniqueness. Students will stand out in field trips and other school activities feeling a sense of belonging. A bond will then form and unite more students together.
Introduction: The motion brought before the house today is “All schools should enforce the wearing of school uniforms from primary 1 to secondary 4.” This is a topic that is hot on the lips of educators, students and parents. School uniforms are a specific set or group of school-standardised clothing. If we look at America, only private and non-government run schools that institute the wearing of school uniforms. In Hong Kong, most schools require their students to wear school uniforms. My team is definitely in favour of schools having their students wear school uniforms. My teammates and I will demonstrate to you that the benefits brought by the wearing of school uniforms far outweigh any perceived disadvantages. Our first main argument, which will be explained by Brian, is that enforcing school uniforms in all schools will lift school spirit greatly. Justine will discuss our second argument, being that school uniforms reduce the amount of bullying. The fourth speaker, Ray, will debate about casual clothing distracting students. Finally, Joyce will summarise our arguments, convincing you, without a doubt, that school uniforms MUST be enforced in all schools.
