Manchester United won the impossible dream by winning the English Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League in the same season. This was a dramatic win. This incredible victory was a combination of skill along with the great leadership and inspiration from the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson and the support from the fans. It was epitomised by the “never say die” attitude instilled in the team. In winning the Champions League, which is considered the most prestigious club competition in world football, it was a personal achievement for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United with a truly global impact. The build up to the final was sensational, but nothing could compare with the drama and theatrics of the final game played against Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain. In the 3 additional minutes of stoppage time, Manchester United made history, by scoring two late goals in quick succession breaking the German hearts. The euphoria and emotions of the win were indescribable. This victory clearly silenced any criticism against the team or manager and unanimously recognised Manchester United as a force to reckon with. It was incidental the final was played on Sir Matt Busby’s birthday, who was a legendary football manager of the club and a survivor of the Munich air disaster, which added even more emotion and purpose to the game. Sir Matt Busby and Munich will always be linked with the history of Manchester United. The FA Cup final proved to be the easiest trophy of the treble winning season, where Manchester United outplayed Newcastle United and won the game comfortably 2-0. The FA Cup is the oldest competitively contested cup competition in the world. We can look back today, at the remarkable moments of 1999 and reminisce about the triumphs achieved and hope it may be achieved once again under ‘The Chosen One’ – David Moyes. Even with the consistent disappointments of the current season, losing all hope of winning any trophies and qualifying for the champions league next season. . One must draw inspiration from that incredible season and not let the Manchester United spirit of “never say die” fade away. It would be encouraging, to see all fans and supporters exercising patience and undue support, as history has a way to repeat itself. David Moyes should be given a fair chance to demonstrate his capability and inspire the team to its best potential in creating history.
