It is hard to imagine in the modern world that a country cannot feed its people, but in 1984, the Ethiopian Famine took over one million lives. There were many causes that contributed to the complications faced in Ethiopia. These problems received major attention in the global Community. The famine drastically changed people’s lives because of the lack of food and resources and affected Ethiopia to our present day.
The first and the most serious problem that causes by poverty are hunger, or preciously, malnutrition. We can find these kinds of problems almost all over Africa and some other underdeveloped countries. These were witnessed by thousands of people through TV, radio, newspaper, journals, etc. “In the early 1980s, the mass media dramatically brought us the picture of hunger from Africa – starving children, skin and bone, with their bloated bellies, too weak to even stand up.'; (Warnock p.1) At the same time, people living in more developed countries or wealthy states are enjoying different kinds of delicious meals and dumping whatever they don’t like. Low socio-economic status and its correlates, such as lower education, poverty, and poor health, affect our society as a whole. Inequities in wealth distribution, resource distribution, and quality of life are increasing in the United States and globally. There are many ways to fight this reality, and some a far simpler and more practically applied than others. One smart and simple change may be adapted immediately. It has the possibility to drastically impact the quality of life with those of lower socio-economic status. The proposed change would be to alter the list of foods covered in Americas supplemental nutritional assistance program ( or SNAP), as it could dramatically impact the health of those most likely to suffer from heart disease which is currently the leading cause of death in the United states (AHA). Currently “SNAP benefits can be used to purchase all food products, not including: beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco; any nonfood items; vitamins and medicines; foods that will be eaten in the store; or hot foods” (snap.org). The S.N.A.P. program should instead, be only available for use when paying for healthy foods because this policy change would provide better nutritional, medical and economic value to the U.S.
At any age, nutrition is vital to maintaining health and enhancing quality of life. However, achieving good nutrition can be especially difficult for the elderly, the fastest growing portion of America's population. Many factors, including physiological changes, changes in nutritional needs, illness and physical limitations, food-medication interactions, depression and loneliness, and food insecurity are common causes of malnutrition in the elderly. This paper will explore factors affecting elderly nutrition, provide suggestions for obtaining and maintaining good nutrition after age 65, and describe the services available to help the elderly meet their nutritional needs.
Located in the Caribbean on the island of Hispaniola is the small country of Haiti. Haiti is densely populated, with a population of 11,112,945, 75% of the population living in rural areas, and only about 25% living in urban areas. Lower urban malnutrition is due to a series of more favorable socioeconomic conditions, in turn leading to better caring practices for children and their mothers. It’s obvious that both rural and urban populations of Haiti suffer malnutrition because of the country’s economic policies. In the 48 poorest countries, an average of 2$ a day is made by each working person. Imagine living off 2$ a day in Canada, you couldn’t even buy a Big Mac and a drink for 2$. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, the average African consumes 2300 kcal/day, less than the global average of 2700 kcal/day. Recent figures estimate that 316 million Africans, or approximately 35 percent of the continent's total population, is undernourished. Although hunger in Africa is hardly new, it now occurs in a world that has more than enough food to feed all its citizens. Moreover, while Africa's population is growing rapidly, it still has ample fertile land for growing food. Hunger therefore reflects not absolute food scarcity but rather people's lack of access to resources—whether at the individual, house-hold, comunity, or national leve that are needed to produce or purchase adequate food supplies. The reasons people cannot obtain enough food are: several different historical patterns of in equality. These patterns include the in equalities between Africa and its former colonisers or contemporary financiers, and between Africa's rich and poor. It also includes in equality between members of the same households, where food and the resources needed to obtain it (such as land and income) are often unevenly distributed between men and women, old and young. Every morning when I wake up the first thought in my mind is usually: FOOD! I often lie in bed for a few extra minutes, planning out what I am going to eat for breakfast. Seldom as I go through this routine do I stop to think about those who are less fortunate than me. I often take for granted that everyone wakes up and eats breakfast. But this is far from true, not everyone shares the luxuries that we have in the United States. Some people wake up and wonder if they will eat at all that day, let alone eat breakfast. Why? Because food, like many other things, is unequally distributed throughout the world.
Based on the study of Paarlberg (2006), the problem of food crisis in Africa is growing worse. Their crop yields tend to be much lower per hectare than in other countries like Asia due to military conflicts which displacing farming populations and interrupt production and health problems affected the reduction of further availability of agricultural labour (Paarlberg, 2006). Besides food crisis, many problems and pollutions are caused by agriculture such as pollute rivers, lakes and water courses with artificial fertilizers and herbicides that easily washed from the soil and prolonged use of these results in soils with a low organic matter content which is easily eroded by wind and rain. Moreover, the greater amounts of fertilizers are needed every year for same production of yield crops. In addition, the usage of artificial pesticides and chemical can cause human having health problem and soil with poor structure and aeration and also the nutrient availability will decreasing. Hence, more and more pests and disease become difficult to control as they become resistant to artificial pesticides (HDRA – the organic organistion, 1998).
Food insecurity and poor nutrition is an alarmingly large problem for low income families, especially in developing countries. Many strategies exist to fight this problem, although not many of these address all the factors contributing to it along with all the possible solutions to solve it. In many cases, multiple strategies must correlate and work together so that all the determinants of this issue are addressed and can fight food insecurity from different angles.
