Event Management Paper: The Malice at The Palace The events of November 19, at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan, during the game between the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers, was a moment that left “ a long black stain for NBA Basketball “ (Smith,2004). The altercation, commonly known as the "Malice at the Palace," resonated far beyond the Palace, debate, and scrutiny arose as a result of the player-fan interactions, the Palace and NBA stadium security, and crowd control measures and policies. As the Event Director at The Palace, most importantly, ensuring the safety and success of all events held at the arena is the focus, this incident demands comprehensive analysis and action. Security personnel and local law enforcement intervened to disengage and evacuate the remaining spectators (Pinus, 2009). Both coaches expressed their dismay at the turn of events, with Brown describing it as "the ugliest thing I've seen as a coach or player," and Carlisle stating, "I felt like I was fighting for my life out there" (Associated Press, 2004). Commissioner David Stern was embarrassed by the incident and has taken a direct course of action. Stern emphasized that the actions of the players involved exceeded the professionalism and self-control expected from NBA players. He asserted that players must not enter the stands, regardless of any provocation from attendees. Stern also placed blame on the fans who engaged in violence, stating that they shared responsibility for the brawl. He vowed to redefine the bounds of acceptable conduct for fans attending NBA games and to permanently exclude those who overstep those bounds (Smith, 2004; Sheridan, 2004). In light of these events, it is evident that the incident at The Palace has far-reaching implications for the NBA, its players, fans, and the league's reputation as a whole. Immediate action must be taken to address the root …show more content…
By addressing player tensions, improving fan behavior management, enhancing security preparedness, modifying stadium layout, and implementing comprehensive crowd control measures, The Palace can mitigate the risk of similar altercations and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees at NBA games. Changes that will be made to prevent this type of incident from occurring again. To improve the safety and security of the Palace, the following changes are proposed to be improved. The priority improvement is enhanced security measures. With enhanced security measures and additional training for all staff in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crowd control, the staff will be better equipped to manage high-tensity situations. Furthermore, assigning additional security and implementing additional security checkpoints during high-risk games such as future games with the Pacers will prevent prohibited items from entering the arena. Additionally, the enhanced presence will help influence the spectators to follow the guidelines. While the NBA has not implemented a Code of Conduct, our team will develop a set of guidelines outlining expected behaviors and outcomes for violating the expectations. Through community outreach and signage, fans will be educated on the new expectations. In addition, to help encourage appropriate interactions between
The next day, March 17, the Canadians were scheduled to play the Detroit Red Wings at the Forum in Montreal. The mood of the spectators was fowled even more by the fact that the Wings were a point behind Richard's team in the standings. A crowd of nearly 800 protestors had already gathered around the Forum by game time. Due to these manifestations, extra police forces were called to the scene. Officials pleaded with Campbell, asking him not to appear at the game. He ignored them and quietly made his way to his seat. The fans noticed him and threw peanuts, eggs and programs at him.

Saints and Sinners: Irony and Symbolism in Kempe’s “The Book of Margery Kempe” Throughout history there have been many cases of women who possess strong powers and a passion for God, especially in the Middle Ages. One woman that fit into that category was Margery Kempe, a fifteenth-century visionary, who was a controversial figure in the Christian faith. Margery insisted that Jesus talked to her, while many people thought that she was being possessed by the devil. During the time of the Middle Ages, many stories of women saints were exposed with many differences from Kempe’s life, however there were some surprising similarities as well.
The motivation of people can sometimes be crazy, and sometimes, ridiculous to us but to them, it can be as important as a lifeline. Take Aengus for example. His motivation may seen ridiculous to some, but he probably spends his whole life looking for the glimmering girl. Or you could see Walt Masters as another example. His motivation rides on a single promise to a man named Loren Hall, whos claim was about to get jumped.
and not to bring them to my games.” Sterling’s recorded conversation immediately invoked a series of protesting reactions from a great deal of public figures within and outside the basketball field. Five days after the recording tape was released, on April 30th 2014, Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, announced that Sterling would be banned from NBA games for life, and most likely would be forced to sell the Clippers. Silver stated, “We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views. They simply have no place in the NBA.”
The Book of Margery Kempe is a spiritual autobiography dictated by the titular Margery Kempe. To this day, there is still much scholarly debate as to whether Margery should be considered a genuine spiritual mystic, a madwoman, or simply a fraud. Throughout her life, Margery had visions in which she talked to Jesus, Mary, and various saints. In many of these visions, Jesus very directly gives Margery advice regarding how she should live her life. Interestingly enough, Margery was and illiterate laywoman and so her slow evolution into a religious enthusiast garnered much suspicion from her contemporaries (and from modern readers as well!). The fact that Margery most often expressed her religious fervor through fits of crying, weeping, screaming,
Suspense is a 1913 film that portrays the story of a tramp intruding into a family’s home, where a mother takes care of her child while her husband is away. The plot is a common one that had been used previous times before the film’s release, such as in The Lonely Villa (1909). However, through taking advantage of the single frame shot, the filmmakers were able to create a masterful aesthetic of two separate stories that turn a basic plot into a complex story. The film created an inventive way of illustrating stories within cinema by allowing the audience the chance to consume more narrative in less time within just one take.
The tribal police had to pull twenty or thirty adult Spokanes off the court. Coach was passionate about that game, he was furious when the referees gave 4 of his players technical fouls to please the Indian crowd. He cursed and screamed and was thrown out of the game. After the game, Coach went to see Junior in the hospital and apologized for putting him in the game, and that he should have cancelled the game completely because of the anger of the Indians that he left the reservation. He cared about his players and didn’t want them to run 50 laps of the gymnasium, he cared about their feelings while also being serious about letting them win.
...ent behavior in order to win the game. Whereas, “sports violence can be seen as either an example of laudable competitive drive present in worthy participates or an underhanded attempts at rule bending” (Raney & Depalma, 2006). Moreover, decades of media exposure may have led to an increase in the acceptance of violence. Is media coverage exploiting sports violence and aggression for ratings? It’s unclear if fans are becoming desensitized and/or imitating the violence witnessed through the medium of media. Regardless, it’s abundantly clear the changes need to be made in light of the negative effects. Identifying and examining media’s role in the public’s acceptance of aggressive behavior in sports may aid society in minimizing the violence and aggression as much as possible surrounding sporting events to make sporting events safer for both players and fans.
The NBA should develop a differentiation leadership strategy. Events that the NBA has organized are becoming irrelevant when compared to its rivals’. For example, the MLB’s All-Star Game has an impact on post-season results. The MLS’s All-Star game features the league’s best against top European soccer clubs. The NHL’s All-Star Game features a ton of scoring in a sport that typically has low scores. There is no novelty factor for the NBA during its All-Star Weekend. Only the NFL’s Pro Bowl is worse than the NBA’s All-Star Weekend in terms of entertainment value.

With the 'unknown certainty' of terrorist actions and fan behavior, it is impossible to ensure a risk-free environment at America's sporting venues. Incidents will happen and emergencies will arise. It is a matter of how one prepares, responds, and recovers to mitigate the consequences of emergencies at a sporting venue. Sport venue managers need to be aware of risk assessment methodologies to detect threats, identify vulnerabilities, and reduce cons...
In the text, "The Book of Margery Kempe”, transcribed by an anonymous priest and translated by Lynn Staley, Margery Kempe incited a notion that she was a part of something greater than herself through the transformation of her identify by her performance after her first childbirth, how she dealt with the scared through her crying performances, and how she taught and persuaded those around her to follow God through her religious performances. Firstly, Kempe’s identity transformed after the birth of her first child, representing that she was a part of something greater than herself because of her ability to transform herself into a devote woman of God. Kempe had found herself attacked by illness after her first child was conceived, and the devil began to appear in her life and convinced her to betray her devotion to religion. She was able to transform this mindset, however, after she had a vision of Jesus.
Anton Chekhov said “In displaying the psychology of your characters, minute particulars are essential.” (Chekhov) These particulars are not always given to the reader with a description, the author may put clues about the personality of a character through describing other things pertaining to the character. An example of this is, how the use of literary devices to describe a character’s home may give the reader insight into the character’s personality. In both the poem Dead Souls written by Nikolai Gogol, and the novel The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the literary devices used to describe character’s homes gives the reader an indication of the characters personality and convictions.
