Male and Female Ways of Thinking
It has long been thought that men and women have fundamental
difference in the way they think, but this was always considered to be
down to the hormones. Recently it has been discovered that although
the hormones do play a role in the behaviour and views of the
different sexes, the brain also plays a key role. It has been found
that there are many ways which the male brain varies from the female
brain. This challenges the equal rights and opportunities have long
been struggled for.
In the various studies that have been performed, many conclusions have
been drawn. Some have been suspected for some time. These include the
fact that men’s brains are about 10% larger than women’s. This doesn’t
seem to matter much, as men’s bodies are on average 8% larger than
women’s, but there is still a small size difference. However, the
major findings are in the purpose rather than the size. One of these
results is that women have many of the segments of their brains
connected together, while men’s are separated. This allows women to
multi-task, while men have much more specialized thinking. It is
thought this is why women tend to see things from various angles and
men are more straightforward. It is also thought that this is the
reason behind the higher numbers of ADHD, autism and dyslexia in men
and also why women can recover quicker after strokes, as their
activity can be transferred to other parts of the brain. However this

it might be more beneficial for them to be taught separately, at least
while they are learning basic skills. However, while this might be
better for the mental side of children’s development, psychologically
and socially separate schooling could stop children reaching full
maturity.
So this matter is still undecided. Logic tells us to use this
information to become more efficient, dividing genders into what they
are suited for, while emotionally we want equality for genders no
matter what. I personally think that given the right initiative men
and women can achieve the same things, but they should be encouraged
to go into the fields that they are naturally better at. It would b
foolish to waste this new information, but we can’t completely
disregard human feelings.
Connell: Chapter 4 “Sex Differences & Gendered Bodies”: I found this entire chapter quite intriguing, but I really appreciate the way that Connell approaches the ways in which males and females differ, and yet she also points out how there is no significant difference in brain anatomy and function between sexes. I found the statement by neuroscientist Lesley Rogers incredibly interesting, she states, “The brain does not choose to be wither a female or a male type. In any aspect of brain function that we can measure, there is considerable overlap between females and males” (p.52). This statement when paired with information about the affect social processes have on the body is mind boggling to realize, as Connell states, “biology bends to the hurricane of social discipline” (p.55). It is unnerving to think that I am merely a product of my society.

Introduction The topic of gender differences must understandably be approached with caution in our modern world. Emotionally charged and fraught with ideas about political correctness, gender can be a difficult subject to address, particularly when discussed in correlation to behavior and social behavior. Throughout history, many people have strove to understand what makes men and women different. Until the modern era, this topic was generally left up to religious leaders and philosophers to discuss. However, with the acquisition of more specialized medical knowledge of human physiology and the advent of anthropology, we now know a great deal more about gender differences than at any other point in history.
Education was sex segregated for hundreds of years. Men and women went to different schools or were physically and academically separated into “coeducational” schools. Although others are convinced that social conditioning is the cause for the differences between the male and female, it is very unlikely that biological differences play no role in behavior. The male and female brains differ not only by how they work, but also on the size. Since the second World War there has been a steady increase of women on the workforce across all the different types of careers there are in the United States. Some careers have seen more of a rapid change than others, a few of the career fields that have not really had much growth in gender diversity have been Engineering and Technology. Both of these fields have always been more male dominate throughout the history of their existence. The problem is that both of these careers demand a constant stream of new innovative ideas to fuel advancements in different types of technology. Those advancements are also very important to the public’s day to day life, as both of these fields are all around us every day. There is no better way to get new ideas than to bring in someone who has a different thought process than you. That is why colleges and companies need to try harder to bring in women to these careers rather than overlook them. With that being said if someone is not right for the job, then they’re not right for the job, the problem is that many companies are choosing male engineers over female engineers. If the careers in these to field want to keep having great advancement, they’re going to need all the great minds that we can get, and stop turning so many away.
