In 1965, radical human rights activist Malcolm X gave a speech regarding tactics freedom fighters should consider using during the violent area of the civil rights era. His speech declared that people of color should be respected as human beings, and if they were not, he and other activist intended to bring this right into existence “by any means necessary.” This quote insinuated that Malcolm X and his followers were ready and willing to use any tactics available to gain human rights, including violence. Since Malcolm X’s 1965 speech, this speech has been recreated and recited in churches, protests, and rallies. Ethical fading is known as “the erosion of the ethical standard in which a person becomes used to engaging in or condoning unethical behavior.” BP and Transocean’s need to make multi-billion dollar profits blinded them to the ethical implications. The company culture’s instinct was to benefit them in every situation possible, instead of serving those who work for the company. Tendencies such as ethical fading explain the company’s culture because it helps explain why leaders amongst BP and Transocean did not take any initiative in resolving maintenance issues within the oilrig. There never was a leader(s) to help guide the two companies to success within their oilrig maintenance. If the company had an appointed liaison or leader to communicate between the blue-collar workers and the companies, there would have been more dialogue to create feasible solutions. Additionally, there seemed to not be a focused, educated, and organized group of leaders between Transocean and BP to build working relationships between the two companies while seeking the best for employees and business. If these positions were already in place, the appointed leader(s) did not do a good job in sustaining relationships with either companies or the workers of the rig.
