vehicles are much more sophisticated and intelligent than they were years ago; car manufactures and the automotive industry research and development are competing to come with new technology every day in order to make the cars smarter, more intelligent and most important safer, and with the wide use of the smart devices like phone, tablets, laptops and other electronic devices, car automakers had to design and develop applications and programs to integrate and connect their cars to the drivers’ smart device as the driver expect to get assistant, be connected and access most of the car functionality using a smart device. Many innovations within hardware and software have developed to allow the driver to get an assistant on the highway throughout …show more content…
From this point there is a need to make sure the car in a good condition and it is safe to drive before start the journey and to give assistant to the drivers on the road in case of the car breakdown.
Therefor car manufactures introduced techniques and built-in notification icons in the car to inform the driver of the car condition before start driving; as an example, if there is a battery icon appears to the driver on the dashboard lights, it means the car telling the driver that there is something wrong with the car battery and the car inspection need to be done by mechanical expert to get further info about the battery condition; Still this techniques of giving assistant to the drivers have many drawbacks:
1. Complicity to understand the notification icons in the car.
2. Only accessible within the car.
3. The notification icons do not give any assistance in case of the car

Lately, telematics has been used more and more to mean “automotive telematics” which use informatics and telecommunications to enhance the functionality of motor vehicles such as wireless data applications, intelligent cruise control, and GPS in vehicles (K. Y. CHO, C. H. BAE, Y. CHU and M. W. SUH 2006). This definition identifies telecommunications transferring information as the key enabling technology to provide these advanced services. Automotive telematics is the idea of assisting the drivers, providing information about the car conditions, connecting the car with other roadside assistance and towing cars on the road, and integrating Automobiles as completely as possible. Automotive telematics includes putting cellular services, GPS/GPRS systems, weather displays, and many other technological ideas into Automobiles to serve all the desires of a customer.
The benefits of telematics are wide, as developing technologies can do more beyond just notifying the driver about the car problems through dashboard warning lights. The implementation of the telematics technologies in the car and through mobile applications added more safety to the driver on the road, assisting and help to connect the car to the service centres and car manufactures, and to connect the driver anytime to the nearest towing cars and roadside assistance on the road. A few advantages of the telematics
Even though all these features are helpful some are not too crazy about them. Some do not like my ford touch because of phone pairing troubles and more. Many older people do not like it because there are no knobs or buttons to manually turn things on and off in their vehicles. Then some think the system is just too complicated and hard to use and prefer not to have this feature in their vehicle. Then consumers are saying it is distracting to drivers it is almost like playing with a small tablet while operating a vehicle. There have also been consumer reports of freezing screens and system up dating issues and low satisfaction review ratings. Many individuals are disappointed in the system and prefer more standard features on their ford vehicles.
GM is also a pioneer when it comes to in-car navigation and entertainment systems. Starting this year, the company will install fast 4G mobile broadband in each of its cars sold in the United States and Canada[2]. Companies are keen on supporting research for smart cars; for instance last year, GM fitted 2800 cars in Detroit with devices that send and receive traffic and weather signals[3].
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
One of the most popular GPS systems is General Motor's OnStar system. OnStar not only offers the navigation aid like normal navigation systems, but also a wide variety of other features as well. It provides automatic theft notification which signals a call center allowing the vehicle to be tracked, automatic crash notification which alerts the call center when air bags are deployed, road-side assistance aiding travelers in finding the nearest repair center, and an in-vehicle emergency button which immediately contacts and OnStar operator. By stating your pin number to an operator, OnStar can automatically unlock your car if you lock your keys inside. It is backed by the company's policy of "hands on the wheel, eyes on the road" as well. OnStar has voice recognition as audio directions. In addition to the necessities of traveling, OnStar can help you find a hotel in the area you are heading, order flowers while driving, and even suggest certain restaurants you may want to eat at and make reservations while on the road.
The use of technology makes our daily tasks easier, such as a better sense of direction while driving via a GPS, safety features in our cars such as Auto Drive and Auto Park. These technologies have made driving an easier and enjoyable experience as well as reducing our chances of getting into accidents. The research presented in the following article “Driven to Distraction [in car technology]” provided surprising conclusions. Professor John D Lee from the University of Iowa states the following issue: “Technology is changing very quickly. Many of these things coming into the car were not designed to be used in it.”(Edwards 8). He proves that there are a lot of in car technologies in today’s society that can demand our full attention without us even knowing, and can lead to tremendous consequences that can become dangerous distractions on the road. Satellite navigation (GPS) makes our lives easier because it can give us the correct directions to a desired address. This is unlike the past where the navigationally challenged would consider it a nightmare to drive to a new location.
The usage of Haptic Interfaces on everyday devices has revolutionized the way that we will interact with computers and mobile devices for everyday usage. In this paper, I will contend that Haptic interfaces will be used in my Car Checker application, because it will be helpful with light, stimulating jolts of touch feedback in regards to buttons being pressed in the application and the vibrations that come with the application notifications. Before I will talk about the different reasons why haptic interface will be helpful in the car checker application, some background knowledge about haptic interfaces will be discussed in order to provide some context for the use of the haptic interface.
People around the world are constantly moving from place to place. Whether that place is work, a restaurant, or home, people require a means of transportation in order to arrive at a desired destination safely and efficiently. One of the most used means of transportation today are cars. Cars play an important role in the world’s economy by transporting goods and people. Automobiles have come a long way since Ford’s first Model T, and the auto industry plans to further enhance the technology and capabilities of the cars that drive on our roads. New technological advancements like rear-view camera, self parking, and auto braking have greatly improved the overall safety of cars today. However, one of the most talked about ideas are autonomous
Modern internet technology is introduced into new vehicles as a safety feature. One recent idea is having connectivity between vehicles. Ankeeta Patel of Parul Institute of Engineering and Technology presents the
Furthermore, silent alarms and enhanced radio communications with the dispatcher will allow the drivers to request for help in appropriate amount of time. A vehicle tracking device will too serve as an important indirect communication device when a driver is under distress and unable to communicate. Other minor changes such as improved lighting inside the cab to allow the driver to detect passenger activities and latches inside the trunk can also go a long way to ensure driver
As the market continues to grow for smart-phone and tablet computer apps, car companies are beginning to want a piece of the action so they can offer you a variety of cloud computing apps in your vehicle. Whether it is apps for finding parking at the local mall or GPS apps for directions, car companies like Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and Toyota are upgrading their cars to accommodate their clients' digital lifestyles. For example, Mercedes-Benz is developing a series of apps that use voice recognition software for interaction with Facebook and Twitter while you are driving.
Installed systems inside vehicles have become a process of differentiation to understand customers looking for cars with more than just the ability to transport people from one point to another. Introducing of information systems inside vehicles has enabled manufacturers to provide their customers with extra functionality, by means of improving the desirability of the the product towards satisfying customers and at the same time enabling new business style and models through the supplying of efficient services to customers. And this changes the existence of competition in the automobile industry

Over the last few decades, the use of cell phones has become a very common tool. Furthermore, Technology has certainly advanced, and the cell phone is becoming the most preferred mode of communication. The demand for a cell phone is growing every day. In addition, the use of wireless technology is affordable, and anyone can buy a cell phone at a reasonable price. They come in all shapes and sizes. They range from black to bright metallic white. American public use of cell phones is increasing everyday. As the number of people using cell phones increase, the use of cell phones while driving will also increase on our streets and highways. At the same rate, motorists still converse on cell phones and write text messages while driving. Motorist will also engage in other activities apart from driving. For example, drivers will text when driving, and they will dial numbers. Drivers will receive calls and converse with the recipient for long periods. Again, driving demands your full attention, and your concentration needed when talking on the phone. However, it means that the driver has to divert his attention to the conversation, which leads to less concentration on the road. On the contrary, one can therefore connect motorist’s accidents and cell phone usage while driving.
Imagine you are driving into an intersection after the light turns green. As you pull into the intersection another vehicle runs the red light and broadsides your car. If only there had been a device in your car that warned you about the vehicle’s approach, the collision may have been completely averted. In fact, this technology exists and is called Vehicle to Vehicle communication (MIT). Vehicle to Vehicle communication (V2V) is an emerging and transformative technology that has the potential to make driving safer, relieve congestion, and generally make road travel a better experience for all. Vehicle to Vehicle communication is a general term for technologies that facilitate ad hoc wireless data transmission between vehicles driving on the road and infrastructure alongside it, using dedicated short range communication (DSRC) technologies such as the 802.11p protocol, which was approved in 2010 as the standard protocol for vehicle based communication networks (IEEE). Using these protocols, vehicles share information as simple as location and speed or information as complex as electronic stability control data. These technologies may seem to be science fiction, but in fact they are being developed and deployed today by companies such as Mercedes Benz and General Motors. Initially, we planned to investigate the applications of V2V communications to autonomous vehicles only, but we later found that its applicability goes well beyond autonomous vehicles and shifted focus to V2V technologies more broadly.
