Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian of Hindu faith who was the leader of the Independence party fighting for freedom from British rule for the people of India. Gandhi is someone that you can admire because of all of his humanitarian achievements. Gandhi had strong values and was a person who knew what he believed in and he stood up and wasn’t afraid to have his say in for what he believed in, he accomplished a great many things in his life. There are not too many people in the world that stand up and make a memorable positive change in the world.

Gandhi was working in South Africa as a legal representative for Indian traders, whilst working in this role Gandhi experienced racial discrimination, rather than let it beat him he decided to stand up and fight back against racism. Once Gandhi returned to India the British government was paying the famers very little and they could only grow cash crops, Mahatma Gandhi thought the rules unfair, so he set up non-violent protests and strikes against the British Government, after a little time the British signed an agreement to allow for a better range of crops and pay. Mahatma Gandhi was also famous for an historic event called the ‘Salt March’ in 1930. The British Government enforced a salt act that stopped Indians from receiving and selling salt which also had a large tax. Gandhi wanted to put a stop to this so he started a march that was 388 km to produce salt from seawater this was part of the civil disobedience act and the first time in history there was a challenge to British authority. Gandhi made a speech explaining that India could not be part of the war to free from Hitler because India itself was not under free rule. Once World War 2 ended, the British discovered that India and its people had grown more independent and it was no longer possible for English rule to work as India had became its own country.
Evaluate the significance of this person for the religious tradition to which they belong Mahatma Gandhi followed the religion of Hinduism, which is not an organised religion but follows a belief system that all Hindus should seek understanding of knowledge and truth which they believe is the only reality. Gandhi followed his religious beliefs to the best of his ability but at times he did break some rules. Gandhi did what he knew was right and lived with integrity to practice his religious beliefs. When protests became violent Gandhi called them off because he didn’t people getting hurt.
