The Magna Carta, written and signed on June 15th, 1215, is a relevant historical event that highlights the consequences of abuse and exploitation of power. This event was accentuated through the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, The Third of May 1808 by Francisco Goya, and The Virgin of Mercy with the Family of the Catholic Monarchs by Diego de la Cruz. At the time the Magna Carta was written and signed, King John was the king of England. He wasn’t praised by his barons because of his selfish actions. King John lost major territories in France only after a few years of being king. He raised taxes extremely high to fund his attempts at retrieving back his lost lands. When he got the chance to do so, he led his barons into a war with France in 1214 to try and capture Normandy, but he was unsuccessful. …show more content…

The barons, who called themselves the Army of God, were led by a man named Robert Fitzwalter who marched himself and them to London. King John tried to get Archbishop Langton (who was consecrated by Pope Innocent III) to host a peace talk. This resulted in the creation of the Magna Carta, which was signed in Runnymede. The document contained clauses that basically provided justice among the barons and implemented laws that the king had to follow to prevent abuse of his power. King John didn’t follow the negotiations and had Pope Innocent III annul it shortly after it was signed. This once again caused rebellion and the Army of God showed their support to the son of the King of France, Louis, whom they wanted as king.
