Magic in The Descent of Innana and Sappho
In the ancient text The Descent of Innana and the lyric poetry of Sappho, language is viewed as magic. Not only are the words themselves acting as magic, as in an invocation, but other things manifest themselves as magic throughout the works. The most common throughout the works of Sappho is that of love. Sappho also shows us the magic of everyday life in many of her poems. Finally, the writing down of the works performs a magic all of its own; the magic of continuation. Through the writing of their works the story of Innana and the poetry of Sappho will live on forever.
The most obvious use of language as magic is in The Descent of Innana. This text is actually all about language as magic. It originated as a ritual that was reenacted along with group participation as part of a religion. Innana is the earth goddess and in this ritual the story of the past is invoked to reproduce the happenings in it and guarantee the passing of one season to the next. The words also held the power to unite people in the cause. At certain times, the priestess would say a line such as “my lady abandoned heaven, abandoned earth, to the nether world she descended. Innana abandoned heaven, abandoned earth, to the nether world she descended. Abandoned lordship, abandoned ladyship, to the nether world she descended (Descent 790)”, the audience would have chimed in on the repetitive parts of the lines. It is also possible that, due to the repetitive nature of the ritual, people memorized the ritual and would recite along with the priestess. This shows how the ancient people bound themselves together through language, they had a common ritual, which they took part in and knew the...

...s could also have eternal life. This is another way that these works are sacred magic. The Descent of Innana is one of the first written pieces of literature we have. Sappho is one of the earliest lyric poets that we have a record of. These works are an example of the idea of the magic of writing itself coming to life. The idea that something can be written down and outlast the writer is truly something the Greeks would have held as magical.
As you can see, the writing of ancient Greeks shows sacred magic in many ways. There is magic in it’s most literal form in the ritual of The Descent of Innana. Magic also manifests itself within these texts. There is magic in love, everyday life, and in the writing of these texts, which brings about eternal life. Seen in this way, it is easy to see why people would agree that these texts hold sacred magic.
Literature shows us the changes of our society from time to time. It also gives us an idea about people, culture, politics, gender traditions, as well as an overall view of previous civilizations. As a part of literature, poetry introduces us to different cultures with different perspectives. Ancient Egypt and ancient China may differ in terms of culture, politics, economic stability, tradition, or even in religious belief. However, in poetry, especially in love lyrics both Egyptian and Chinese poems portray common area of describing women, social attitudes toward love, sexuality and the existence of romance or selfishness in relationships. . If we look at the Egyptian poem “My god, my Lotus” and the Chinese poem “Fishhawk”, we will see both poems have similarities in describing relationships. Also, they have the similarity of imagining the lovers and their expression of love toward each other. However, both poems have some significant differences in terms of representing female sexuality, gender disparity and the display of love.

The poets integrated ?metaphysical conceits? as focal parts of these poems. Along with these, they used effective language as a basis for their convincing arguments, they included subjects of periodical importance (e.g. ?courtship? and ?religion?), and use very clever structures that are manipulated in order to make the poem read in the desired way. The very clear indication of the theme in question was strongly aided by the way in which the personas portrayed the emotions they felt and the way they showed their attitudes towards the subject. Considering all these factors, the poets made critical arguments to the mistresses in order to alter their views, thus changing their minds, on denying the poets the sex that they desired so strongly.

Elements of a myth, tale, and epic are intertwined and combine to form the story of “Ibonia”. The main character, Ibonia, has connections to the Gods which is central to a myth, these divine qualities are demonstrated through his marvelous birth and ability to speak while in the womb. The story can also be characterized as a tale, due to Ibonia representing the everyman and everywoman and undergoing change on an individual level as he navigates his rite of passage. As the story progresses, Ibonia also becomes an epic hero, as he travels from the familiar to unfamiliar on his rite of passage journey and ultimately introduces the concept of marriage to the earth. An epic hero is making a move towards humanity and leaving behind his Godly attributes and connections, often dying in the process, as he faces his own limitations and the ever-present death-dealing forces. However, during this process the hero leads society to the future. Ibonia is on a
The word myth derives from the Greek mythos, which has a range of meanings from "word," through "saying" and "story," to "fiction"; the unquestioned validity of mythos can be contrasted with logos, the word whose validity or truth can be argued and demonstrated. Because myths narrate fantastic events with no attempt at proof, it is sometimes assumed that they are simply stories with no factual basis, and the word has become a synonym for falsehood or, at best, misconception. In the study of religion, however, it is important to distinguish between myths and stories that are merely untrue. The term mythology denotes both the study of myth and the body of myths belonging to a particular religious tradition. The first part of this article discusses the nature, study, functions, cultural impact, and types of myth, taking into account the various approaches to the subject offered by modern branches of knowledge. In the second part, the specialized topic of the role of animals and plants in myth is examined in some detail. Some say that in Ancient Greece, Greek myths evolved over many years like history, passed down for generations. They were stories of human kings and heroes with supernatural powers, or various prayers and rituals for specific gods. The Greeks believed their gods were a lot like humans. They believed their gods were able to have children, feelings, and live their lives the way humans did every day. However, each god had a specific duty. They each were in charge of a different aspect of life. Aphrodite was placed in charge of love, beauty, marriage, and vegetation. Many temples were built in honor of her and other gods, and each city was usually a patron to a particular god. Ceremonies were performed for the worship of the gods, and the people of the towns distributed gifts to shrines. Aphrodite had many statues carved in worship of her.
The earliest myths are found to exist during the archaic period. The Greek word “Mythos” describes words or speech and can also mean a tale or legend. Myths have continually been to be passed down for traditional purposes. Elders would tell these magnificent stories to inspire and teach young children about gods and heroes. Mythology was important
The thing the Greeks are best known for, is their gods, and stories about them. The stories explained how things became. For instance, one story said that before the earth was made, there was a fight between a god, and a giant. The god killed the giant, and the parts of the giant became the earth. His teeth became the rocks, and his hair became the grass. His hands and feet became mountains, and his toes and fingers became trees.
Further, the context in which the myth was written must be taken into account when reading the story. Bronislaw Malinowski in his essay “The Role of Myth in Life” says that “The text, of course, is extremely important, but without the context it remains lifeless” (Malinowski 201). The context that needs to be addressed when reading the myth are the cultural and sociological components that surround a mythological text. This context, consisting of the understanding of the culture in which the myth exte...
But plenty of these stories answered many philosophical questions the Greeks had. For example, Mythology was able to give people the answer to questions such as: Where do we come from? Where do we go after we die? Why do certain natural events happen? It helped the Greeks understand and adapt to a way of life and a reason to live. But our ideology has changed a lot since then, new religions such as judaism, christianity, and plenty more. It started off with a wide variety of Gods and olympians, but after a while people started to make up their own poems and myths about new people and gods. After the myths were made eventually new religions would pop-up from different places and the New Gods would be introduced to different people. Eventually this created monotheism which is the belief in just a single God hence Christianity, Judaism but it's not that Mythology has died off. More that Greek mythology is slowly dying down but not being forgotten. These religions that are new have myths as well, for example the story about Jesus Christ in the Bible and many of the other exploits from it. Myths grant meanings that teaches people who they are and where they belong on Earth, but above all, it gives somebody a reason for life and takes away the isolation and meaningless of it
The earliest literary embodiment of the Greek myths is in the poems of Homer. Here the tales appear in their simplest and most naïve form. The Gods are be...
Greeks had used writing since c. 1400 BC, but it was not until the late 8th century BC that their literature was first written down. Greek literature began in Ionia with the brilliant epics of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey. These mature products of a long tradition of oral poetry brought together a vast body of divine and heroic myths and sagas that served as a foundation for much subsequent Greek literature. The epic view of humankind had a lasting influence on Greek thought; indeed, it has been said that later Greek literature is but a series of footnotes to Homer.
Some interpreters analyze myth stories on the basis of psychology, some analyze them historical and social background of their time. Grave’s interpretation in his books ‘The while goddess and The Greek Mythsadds’ to the historical and social also that of seasonal because it expressed worship of nature and natural forces. (1). Many of modern fantasy writers use the ideas from ancient mythology. Fantasy is one person’s created or written of a supernatural occurrence anthropologists consider the stories of our culture’s mythology. Many people do not believe the garden of Eden but still contains many important truths about the nature of God, humanity and reality (2). Myths spring from shared language culture and environment. So, we can find myths elements used by modern fantasy writers, about some other trickster figures. But myth has at least a metaphysical reality and approach and on other side it should be real in the culture the place where it started. Mythology is powerful we should respect other cultures and different world views because the views are the products of their experiences. Fantasy is a type of imaginative thinking which is totally controlled by the thinker’s wish or feelings. Fantasy is a form of dreaming, many regard it day dreaming as the form of fantasy and dreaming at the time of sleeping also treated as fantasy. From the practical point of view fantasy helps a frustrated person to depict himself as achieving his goals. (3). Myths often merge with legends, tales etc., Myhs cannot be say as untrue. They abid the belief of any other reality. But fantasy is unreal or fairy stories. A post modern fantasy differs from modern fantasy in the words between ‘real world and un real world’. In these two words the second one is purely fantasy or mindscape. There are all just the basic differences. Because there are common myth ideas which shared by tales
Language is a part of our everyday lives, and we can describe the meaning of language in many ways. As suggested in Gee and Hayes (2011, p.6 ) people can view language as something in our minds or something existing in our world in the form of speech, audio recordings, and writings or we can view language as a way of communicating with a group of people. Language can be used to express our emotions, make sense of our mental and abstract thoughts and assists us in communicating with others around us. Language is of vital importance for children to enable them to succeed in school and everyday life. Everyone uses both oral and written language. Language developed as a common ability amongst human beings with the change
Language is nothing but a media which expresses feelings, ideas, experiences and even pains properly to others. Cultural background is the origin of language. Language is one of the channels which promote human relations and human affections. Language always unites the people and sometimes language itself diverse the people. Without the language we cannot imagine the existence of human beings on the earth. Language is a system of words that people used to express thoughts, feelings each other. The word ‘language’ derived from Latin “lingua” which means ‘tongue, speech’. The word sometimes used to refer to codes, ciphers and other kind of communication systems. For example computer programming.
