Destiny, Everybody has one, but when an individual tries to determine their own at all costs, certain significant events can get in the way of their ability to do so. Throughout life, individuals undergo significant experiences that can increase their desire to determine their own destiny but it can become difficult to achieve this destiny if it is at the cost of other individuals’ well-being. During the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is presented many times with opportunities to further his progress at the cost of others and, in the end, this leads to his ultimate demise. This scene is where Macbeth’s driving ambition is first witnessed, the reader is shown how easily Macbeth can be inspired to progress his life, even if it means murdering other people. In act 1 scene 7, Macbeth contemplates the drawbacks that killing King Duncan could have, but is immediately silenced by lady Macbeth who swiftly convinces him to follow through with this deed by dangling the glorious benefits that it might hold for him in the future in his face. This shows the reader the impact that one significant event has on Macbeth’s attitude and desires, all it takes is a hypothetical prophecy and some convincing for him to abandon all his morals and begin murdering people he admires in order to benefit himself. Macbeth feels the pressure of his own dark desires early on in the play during his first visit with the witches, this experience marks the beginning his journey into the abyss of determining his own destiny and it demonstrates how easily some individuals can be influenced when tempted with glory. As this journey continues, Macbeth finds himself trapped in a cycle of impulsive murder and covering his own tracks, he feels obligated to take action in order to maintain his rise to the top and perfectly illustrates how this mentality can quickly turn into a tragic downfall of a powerful and potentially successful individual at the hands of those they impacts with their actions. Many valuable lessons can be taken from this masterpiece by William Shakespeare, one of which being the importance of not compromising the relationships individuals have with their peers for personal gain. While it is important for individuals to take control of their own lives, their determination should never reach the point of damaging the well being of others if they are also interested in living a healthy, happy, and successful
