No society remains immobile, even if some human beings resist changes. The advances in technology and the emergence of new beliefs allow people to have a broader imagination. Thus, numerous new interpretations of ancient works, whether they are plays, folktales, or poems, permeate around the world. These renditions re-tell the original stories in contexts that adjust to modern world. What was regarded serious in the past becomes mockery nowadays. William Shakespeare, one of the greatest English play writers, has a profound influence upon different societies globally since the fifteenth century, for his plays inspire many contemporary artists to present new scopes reflecting their societies. Considered as one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, Macbeth has a completely disparate interpretation in the movie Scotland, PA, which translates the original play into a black comedy. A Scottish royal and general, Macbeth the protagonist undergoes a demonic transformation in personality, in which he unethically takes the crown by murdering numerous characters. The director of the movie alters the plot while maintaining the basic semblance of power, ambition, and masculinity from Shakespeare’s work. In the movie, the alteration of the process Macbeth usurps the power of Duncan, including his internal and external incentives, gives the audience a fresh perspective on one of the English classical plays. Let the Evil Spread Macbeth takes place during eleventh century in England and mainly Scotland where horrendous and supernatural incidents occur. The appearance of three witches at the outset envelops the plot with an ominous atmosphere. The film Scotland, PA is an excellent adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece Macbeth because it makes the play more relatable to more modern times. The director took the plot of the play, but put it into the 1970s, being a much more relatable t...

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth has always been considered one of the literary worlds most celebrated tragedies. It is arguably the darkest and most gruesome of his plays. The protagonist, Macbeth, is the poster child for tragic hero, “a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy” (www.dictionary.com). And until recently we were satisfied with that… At the Cannes Film Festival in 2001, a low budget comedy was unveiled. It was called Scotland, PA. This film was written by a first-time director, Billy Morrissette, and depicts the familiar story in a surprisingly different form.

Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare's great tragedies. There's murder, battles, supernatural portents, and all the other elements of a well-worked drama and written in the 1600’s. This play is about a gentleman who is a warrior and he has too much ambition and greed once all this ambition and greed comes alive and then it elevates into a monstrosity, this is the cause of something he did against his own mind control and will, but to him he has almost a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ approach everything bad he does seems really good for him. The theme in this play is supernatural, in the Elizabethan times this would scare the audience but because the modern day audiences a more adapted to this is would intrigue and maybe bewilder them.
The essence of Macbeth lies not only in the fact that it is written by the universal talent William Shakespeare; the royal-conspiracy, the political unethical activity, the killin...
Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” explores a fundamental struggle of the human conscience. The reader is transported into the journey of a man who recognizes and acknowledges evil but still succumbs to its destructive powers. The character of Macbeth is shrouded in ambiguity that scholars have claimed as both being a tyrant and tragic hero. Macbeth’s inner turmoil and anxieties that burden him throughout the entire play evoke sympathy and pity in the reader. Though he has the characteristics of an irredeemable tyrant, Macbeth realizes his mistakes and knows there is no redemption for his sins. And that is indeed tragic.
I found responding to the play ‘Macbeth’ difficult because of the era it was written in. Shakespeare wrote the play between 1603-1606 when attitudes were completely different to the attitudes of society today, in particular, widespread belief in witchcraft. In contrast to today, when not many people believe in such things. They used to be feared. They were considered evil, ugly and vindictive. They did not belong to this world, they were ‘supernatural’, with supernatural powers. In the play the witches plant ideas into Macbeth’s head, which affects his inner soul. He changes from an honourable soldier to a vindictive murderer. We are introduced to Macbeth in the beginning when he is returning from the battlefield where he proved himself a brave, fighting leader of men. However, the witches expose his self-doubt which leads to sneaky, underhand murder. Duncan, when talking to a soldier in act 1 refers to Macbeth and Banquo as ‘They smack of honour both’, and later in the same scene refers to Macbeth as ‘noble’. Ironically by the end of the play Macbeth is killed as a traitor.
An audience's views while watching Macbeth, a tragedy by Shakespeare, being performed would have been greatly different in seventeenth century England as compared to twenty-first century America. All readers and watchers of the play would view Macbeth as the protagonist in Act I. He is a war hero and beloved by the King of Scotland. Throughout the play, viewers’ views on Macbeth change. Instead of being seen as the protagonist, Macbeth develops into the antagonist. However, the reactions to the play and viewer's disgust and hatred towards Macbeth depend on the time period of the audience. Englishmen in 1606 would have different views about Macbeth than modern viewers today because of the customs of England during that time and because of their sovereign, King James I of England and IV of Scotland. Two key death scenes show not only the change of Macbeth's character into the antagonist, but also the different way audiences from the two time periods would interpret them: the attempted murder of Fleance and the murders
William Shakespeare’s timeless work of art; Macbeth, is so intertwined in the fabric of our media landscape. The extent to which it touches so many people around the world, makes it a great piece to analyze because, every production is likely to be forced to be unique and entrancing. In 2006, Australian director Geoffrey Wright put together and directed a production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, but with a modern adaptation. In this essay, I will argue that the aspect of power in this film is shaped by the modernity of the film, the sexuality of the witches and Lady Macbeth, and the weapons that are used to commit the crimes. I will also analyze the cinematic choices made by Wright in producing the film.
