It is a common stereotype that men are stronger than women. That is however, neither true in Macbeth nor “A Simple Plan”. Macbeth and “A Simple Plan” are similar in the aspect of manipulative women who forced their husbands to betray, lie, and murder.
Macbeth and “A Simple Plan” both contains scenes where the lady of the house convinces their husband to betray another. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth degrades Macbeth by questioning his manhood. “when you durst do it, then you were a man”(I:7:49, Shakespeare). The last thing Macbeth wanted was to not be considered a man by his own spouse. Not only did Lady Macbeth defile Macbeth’s honour, she specifically tells Macbeth that she refuses to accept him as a man until he does the deed. She forced the idea of betrayal into Macbeth. Lady Macbeth manipulated Macbeth to kill his king despite all the loyalty Macbeth has in the king. Without Lady Macbeth, Macbeth would have never gone through with the plans of assassinating King Duncan. In “A Simple Plan”, Sarah convinces Hank to betray his dear friend Lou. She forced the idea into Hank by telling him that no one would expect such an evil plan from an innocent citizen such as Hank. She repeats the fact that nobody would believe that Hank is capable of doing what he has done throughout the entire movie. Hank is a kind person who respected the law and valued friendship; he would have never betrayed Lou without the influence of Sarah.
Secondly, Macbeth and “A Simple Plan” involves scheming wives who convinced their husbands to lie. He even told Lou that the American Dream is hard earned, and not stolen. Further into the movie, Hank suffocated Dwight without any second thoughts. He then disposed of the body as if it was an accident. This massive change in his behaviour came from the devious housewife Sarah. Both kind hearted and pure gentlemen was turned into cold blooded murdered by their beloved wives.
Macbeth and “A Simple Plan” are very similar because the main female characters are strong and controlling woman. These powerful women are able to manipulate their husbands to betray, lie, and murder. Macbeth and “A Simple Plan” clearly have controlling wives who are the real mastermind whereas their husbands are merely puppets awaiting their wives to pull the strings.
Both characters in each story begin as innocent-minded individuals however, when they are exposed to valuable power and possession, they become greedy. Furthermore, Macbeth was known as a loyal hero at the beginning of the story however, this changes when he is informed about his prophecies. This selfishness is evident when Macbeth says “Why hath it given me earnest of success, Commencing in a truth? I am thane of Cawdor. If good, why do I yield to that suggestion/ whose horrid image doth unfix my hair /and make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature? (I,III lines 133-138)”. Through these lines Macbeth expresses the thought of killing Duncan, which demonstrates that he is greedy for control and the crown as he is willing to murder the current king. Macbeth is a Shakespearean tragedy that teaches readers about ambition and greed which resulted in tragedy. The play features many interesting scenes, references to the unknown, and several interesting characters. In 1998, a film was made from Sam Raimi based on a book of the same name, called A Simple Plan. Although the plots are not the same, characters and setting are very similar. The main idea of A Simple Plan illustrates important similarities to Macbeth. The characters have similar feelings, and experience equal losses.
Lady Macbeth’s wicked character has an extreme impact towards her husband. Lady Macbeth is responsible for influencing her husband to commit both crimes; she unleashes the dark side of him and motivates him to become an evil and horrendous man. In various parts throughout the story we find that Lady Macbeth strives beyond limits to be converted into a bitter and sour women. Lady Macbeth shows more ambition then Macbeth does in terms of gaining power regarding kingship. When Macbeth finds out about the witches’ predictions and the first two coming true “Glamis, and thane of Cawdor: The greatest is behind” (1.3.124-125) meaning that he got a taste of power, making him thane of Glamis and thane of Cawdor making him more ambitious for the power to become king. Proving that he will do anything for power he decides that he is going to murder Duncan. When Lady Macbeth receives the letter from Macbeth learning about the witches’ predictions and that two of them came true already, she becomes very ambitious towards gaining power. She doesn’t believe that Macbeth will murder Duncan, so she makes a plan for the murder.
Lady Macbeth negatively guides lots of Macbeth’s behaviour, for instance, when Macbeth hesitates to commit murder, she repeatedly questions his manhood until he feels that he has to do it to prove himself as the man that Lady Macbeth always mentioned; it is also one of the reasons that lead to Macbeth’s downfall, as well as the deaths of the other innocent characters in the text. “[Macbeth does] Like the poor cat i' th' adage? ”(1.7.46) says Lady Macbeth, when Macbeth is hesitating whether kill Duncan or not while he’s in Macbeth’s castle. Shakespeare has taken the stereotypical image of the women of the time and turned it on its head in ‘Macbeth’. Lady Macbeth is shown as a very powerful, strong woman. She has an evil about her that Shakespeare has used to make ‘Macbeth’ a supernatural play. Women were seen to be good and not as powerful as men, in ‘Macbeth’ Lady Macbeth is the dominate character and commands and persuades Macbeth to commit the murders and crimes that he does.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth tells the story of a general who commits a regicide in order to become king. Early in the play, Macbeth is conflicted as to whether or not he wants to kill his kinsman, the king. In the first two acts Macbeth is not portrayed as a ruthless killer; he is a sympathetic character who succumbs to the provocation of his wife and a prophecy foretold by three mysterious witches. In contrast, Lady Macbeth is a manipulative, immoral woman.

Macbeth is fighting for the honor of kingship even though he is not liable to inherit the crown and only becomes acquainted with the idea through a prophecy of three witches. Hank Mitchell, the protagonist of the movie, is presented with 4.4 million dollars in an abandoned plane that he and his friends are first to find. The journeys of both Hank and Macbeth follow a similar plotline that deal with character changes, conflicts confronted and a tragic outcome which seem to root from the pull of temptation.
While not the only contributing factor, Lady Macbeth does play a substantial role in the downfall of her husband. She is a like a catalyst for Macbeth and essentially pushes him to do what he would not have been able to do on his own. Macbeth himself highly ambitious and determined, but his wife is even more so. At first he refuses to kill Duncan but she persists and eventually gets him to do it. It is important to note here that Lady Macbeth pushes Macbeth forward by manipulating him. In this sense, she can be related to Cathy Ames from East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Also, being a woman, she is confined by the conventions of society which prevent her from doing much. At what point she even wishes that she were 'unsexed' so she could commit the murder herself. Because of this, she pours her ambition and desire for power into Macbeth. Again she accomplishes this through manipulation. For example, at one point when Macbeth is disagreeing with her idea of killing Duncan, she questions his manhood:
The Corrupting Power of Unchecked Ambition The main theme of Macbeth - the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints - finds its most powerful expression in the play's two main characters. In the play, Macbeth, the power of a woman is a strong force to be reckoned with. Many times in the play, the female characters have proven their equality with any man.
