Shakespeare uses motifs in many of his works to add more depth to his writing. His play Macbeth includes various motifs such as blood. Blood is one of the most important motif in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and can be seen throughout the entire play. In Macbeth the motif blood symbolizes guilt, mental illnesses, and insecurity/uneasiness. In Act 2 Scene 1, Macbeth is alone in his castle before he kills Duncan. While he is by himself he has a hallucination of a bloody dagger. Macbeth sees the dagger and tries to grab it but there is nothing. He believes that this hallucination is a sign of the murder he is about to commit. Macbeth in act 3 scene 1, hires murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. During the murder, Macbeth is in the hall of the royal palace for his coronation banquet. After the mission has been completed the first murder goes to Macbeth to tell him the news. The murderer enters and stands near the door with blood on his face that he says is Banquo’s. The first murderer begins to tell Macbeth that they succeeded in killing Banquo but his son Fleance has escaped. Macbeth was once confident since Banquo died but is insecure again because Fleance is still alive. Macbeth tells the murderer that they will continue to discuss this tomorrow since he has to tend to his guests. Macbeth starts off with a toast to his guests for good appetites, digestion and good health. Lennox then invites Macbeth to sit at the table but he starts to see the ghost of Banquo sitting down. Macbeth sees the ghost shaking his gory locks at him, which shows Banquo’s head with gashes and covered in blood. The guests at the banquet were confused at Macbeth’s actions and began to stand up to leave. To try and salvage the banquet Lady Macbeth starts to explain to their friends that her husband has had this mental illness that comes and goes ever since he was a child. The witches ask Macbeth if he would rather hear them say it or their masters. Macbeth chooses for the masters to come and explain what they are performing. Once the witches summoned the spirits, thunder is heard and the first apparition was shown as an armored head of a warrior. The apparition tells Macbeth that he should beware of Macduff. Macbeth responds to the apparition admitting that Macduff is one of his fears. The second apparition appears as a bloody child. The second spirit tells Macbeth that he has to be violent, bold and firm because no man born of a woman will harm him (IV, i, 77-81). When Macbeth hears the second apparitions message he becomes arrogant saying that there is no reason to fear Macduff, but will still kill him so he can conquer his fears and sleep well. The final apparition appears as a crowned child with a tree in his hand. He tells Macbeth that he should be brave and proud because he will never be defeated until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill (IV, i, 90-95). Macbeth becomes more confident that no one can defeat him because he believes that a forest cannot get up from its roots and fight him at Dunsinane
