Just last year, when i was in 9th grade, I had times where it was hard to be strong due to mental issues. It was really hard to be independent when I just wanted someone to be there. Although many times I was not the strongest and did some really dumb things like getting bad grades and getting into trouble. I finally got over it, most of the time it was on my own too. I realized that if i wanted my life to change then I had to do something about it, and not let others bring me down or tell me what i can and can’t do. Over the summer I became very independent and I am so much happier now than I was before. My story shows how people can be very independent. and the actions they take. The characters Mackenzie from The Confessional and the republican sniper from “The sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty both show independence through being strong when others try to bring them down, mentally and physically. In the short story “The sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, the republican sniper is very independent. He is on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge in Dublin, Ireland, waiting for enemies to approach, alone. He is then shot at and temporally heals himself. For example the text states, “Taking out of his field dressing, he ripped open the packet with his knife. He broke the neck of the iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid drip into the wound. A paroxysm of pain swept through him. He placed the cotton wadding over the wound and wrapped the dressing over it. He tied the ends with his teeth. ...Then he lay still against the parapet, and, closing his eyes, he made an effort of will to overcome the pain” (O’Flaherty 2). This quote shows how the republican sniper is shot by a enemy sniper and is able to temporarily heal himself even how painful it may be. He is physically strong enough to overcome the pain. Another example would be that the text states, “He was eating a sandwich hungrily. He had eaten nothing since morning. He had been too excited to eat. He finished the sandwich, and, taking a flask of whiskey from his pocket, he took a short drought. Then he returned the flask to his pocket. He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous. The flash might be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching. He decided to take the risk” (O’Flaherty 1). This quote proves that the republican is independent because he knows when he should and shouldn’t do something. In this case he chooses to take the consequences that come upon his actions of smoking and risking getting sighted by an enemy. No matter what he chooses to do, he is by himself and needs to defend himself in any matter. Both quotes show how the sniper is independent. Temporarily healing himself and taking the risk of being seen by an enemy sniper is very cautious and he would have to be ready for anything to come his way. In the book, The Confessional, Mackenzie (Mac) can show and be very much independent. Mac is a mexican american who moved to mexico and is having trouble with a “friend” at school and is often bullied by him. He doesn’t get the help he needs and decides to do things that aren’t very good. For example the text says, “‘You could have tried to understand me a little more,... Maybe if I felt you on my my side,” I say. “Maybe if you explained things to me and trusted me a little. I could, I don’t know, control myself!” (Powers 30). This quote shows how Mac feels that he is mentally independent. He feels as if no one is on his side and he does not know the right things to do because no one showed him. The text also says, “As a side note, Ritalin and cocaine-they don’t feel all that different. Same thing, different packaging. In fact, they’re so much the same, I stopped taking my meds a couple weeks ago traded them in for some coke-it’s reduced my debt to josh by, like, a third” (Powers 13). Also this quote shows how Mac feels that he is independent physically and mentally. Mentally, he does not see the bad consequences that doing cocaine instead of his pharmaceutical prescription and it could mess him up. This shows that Mac is also physically independent because he would have to be really quiet about it and not let it get around the school, etc. so he does not get caught with it. Also, he needs to be physically independent in case someone has a problem and he needs to defend himself. He needs to be able to control himself, especially when he does not know the effects of not taking his prescription. Both of these quotes show how Mac is independent. He feels alone and does not know what to do. He thinks that he can solve the problem by doing bad things like illegal drugs. He does not think twice of this new problem which later gets him into even more trouble. The republican sniper from the short story “The Sniper” fits the independent character trait best.
He doesn’t go only through physical pain or only emotional pain but both. For example the text says, “When the sniper reached the laneway on the street level, he felt a sudden curiosity as to the identity of the enemy sniper whom he had killed… The sniper darted across the street. A machine gun tore up the ground around him with a hail of bullets, but he escaped. He threw himself face downward beside the corpse. The machine gun stopped… Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”. (O’Flaherty 5) This quote shows how even though the sniper already won the battle between him and an enemy sniper, he was curious enough to risk getting shot at my something else (the machine gun) and see who the person he shot and killed was. It turns out that the person he shot was someone relatively close to him. Due to this critical information he is now facing many physical and emotional pain independently. Even though Mackenzie is very independent with the way he solves his problems, the sniper is clearly more independent. He goes through so much more without the choice of wanting to give up, unlike
Mac. Physical and mental struggles can really mess with someone, but Mac from The Confessional and the republican sniper from “The Sniper” are very independent in the way they control their problems. The sniper shows independence by being able to go through physical pain and temporarily heal himself. Mackenzie shows independence by not feeling like his parents are on his side and that they do not care for him enough to show any affection. Although Mac is independent, the sniper is more independent because he is able to go through more struggles that were most likely to cause him to be less independent. This is important because it shows how real people can be independent in the real world.
“The Sniper” and “The Most Dangerous” Game are both different stories, written by different authors. Liam O’Flaherty is the author of “The Sniper”. He was born on one of Ireland’s Aran Islands, in a large family. Since the Aran Islands have a tradition of oral storytelling, Liam O’Flaherty’s house was full of different kinds of stories. He also wrote about Irish peasant life and captured the struggles of the Irish Civil War. His best known novel is “The Informal”, and it talks about a betrayal set during the Irish Troubles.
As a socialistic society we live in we find ourselves in positions were conflicts arise between friends or family. 'The Sniper'; was written by Liam O ' Flaherty to express a subtle yet powerful opinion on such a conflict. With references this essay will analyse the short story bringing to light the structure used to contribute to the theme.
After watching the movie and then reading the book American Sniper I noticed a few different things. Comparing the two and thinking about the similarities and differences. There are not many differences from the movie American sniper and the book American Sniper except that the book talks about his childhood life more. The comparison between the two is interesting because Chris Kyle wrote one while other people directed the other.
The author writes, “It was dangerous. The flash might be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching. He decided to take the risk” (10). The Sniper realises that what he is doing is risky, but he disregards the warning from his brain and continues on. The Sniper knows what the enemy looks for as he lights his cigarette anyway. The author says that “The sniper darted across the street. A machine gun tore up the ground around him with a hail of bullets, but he escaped” (14). There are people out there ready to shoot him but the Sniper decides to go out and see who the other soldier was. As bullets rain down on the Sniper, he courageously rushes on, even though his life is at risk. The Sniper’s bravery is exposed in his ability to stay calm and keep his composure until the job is
"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful thananything that bleeds. Don 't wait until you break. - Laurell Hamilton" This is oftentimes the sentiment felt by soldiers who have served in active duty and have been witnesses to tragedies that leave them emotionally scarred. The Clint Eastwood directed film, American Sniper is amovie that features the real life tragedy of American soldier, Chris Kyle, who served in theUnited States military as a Navy Seal, which is an elite group (Kenny, 2014 and Treitschke,2015). His story is unique in that he himself suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), but as he worked to recover, he valiantly served again by helping fellow soldiers withPTSD ("Chris Kyle," 2013), and was senselessly gunned
In the movie American Sniper by Clint Eastwood we find ourselves in thrown into the heated and bloody War on Terror with a special group of men known as United States Navy Seals. The main characters of this incredible movie include Chris Kyle who becomes the most lethal sniper in American history played by Bradley Cooper, Taya who is Chris’s wife portrayed by Sienna Miller, Marc Lee who is a teammate and fellow operator on SEAL team 3 played by Luke Grimes and finally Biggle’s another operator on SEAL team 3 played by Jake McDorman.

The protagonist is faced with similar scenarios as was Kyle, such as the decision of shooting the man on the roof, or letting him go free. Many arguments may be made on what is morally right, but in the end, all that matters is survival itself, and doing what needs to be done. There are no rules in war, therefore all reasoning to what may be moral must be put aside. While this may be the case, human nature will eventually set in, and remorse can flood a soldier’s conscience. This was made apparent when the sniper broke down and cursed the war, providing for a turning point in the story.
The editorial piece that I have decided to write on is “The real American Sniper was a hate-filled killer. Why are simplistic patriots treating him as a hero?” by Lindy West of theguardian.com. In this piece, West talks about her beliefs on the character of deceased Navy SEAL, Chris Kyle. She focuses on describing Kyles darker side rather than what was displayed on Clint Eastwood’s Hollywood drama, American Sniper. In the movie, as well as in the media, Kyle is described as a loyal patriot. He was performing his duty with honor and courage, saving countless American lives along the way. West paints a much different story, stating “Right wing conservatives are treating it with the same unconsidered, rah-rah reverence that they would the national anthem or the flag itself.”According to West, Kyle is not the American hero that many have come to believe and is getting more credit than he deserves.
I am reaching what kind of tiring snipers go through. I will try to get most of my information from google. So most of the snipers go through acutely all snipers go through a school to learn how to be a good sniper in the field. They have to learn how to overcome the elements of the world like wind, air temperature, and gravity. But they have to be good at marksmanship, observation, and stalking.
Christopher Scott Kyle ‘American Sniper’ was an all American hero to so many people. Born on April 08, 1974, in Odessa, Texas to Deby Lynn and Wayne Kenneth Kyle(Burling #15). When it comes to stories, the most important exposition is setting, and we see that in Liam O’Flaherty’s “The Sniper”, where the setting enables action and conflict for the characters. “The Sniper” is a short story is about two snipers on opposing sides in an Irish civil war who battle on opposite rooftops for survival in the dark of night. This factor, the darkness, starts the whole battle. The time enables the conflict when the Republican sniper lights a cigarette, and it is said, “The flash might have be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching.” (O’Flaherty, 2000, p.6) As a result, the conflict between the two snipers begins when the other sniper fires. Along with time, location also matters. The Republican sniper is located
Novelist and short story writer, Liam O’Flaherty grew up in a village on the western coast of Ireland. He was a good student when he was young, and when he grew older, he enlisted in the British Army. Later, after enlisting in the army, he began to write stories while he was in the war. Many of Liam O’Flaherty’s short stories about war, have become very popular throughout the world. One of his greatest, most popular stories, “The Sniper” has some of O’Flaherty’s experiences of being in the war. The short story, “The Sniper”, was published in the London paper, The New Leader, on January 12, 1923. Liam O’Flaherty was a World War I veteran. He wrote most of his stories while in the war. The stories he wrote, became very popular after the
Having great jobs, being invited to fancy parties is flattering and all… if only it were true. In the short story, “The Glass Slipper” by Alan Armer and Walter E. Grauman, the main characters Smitty and Duchess both go through many obstacles. As they go on with their life stories, neither of them know they are lying to each other. They continue to boast on about their accomplishments, but do realize they are digging their selves a bigger hole in the process. Within all of the obstacles, Smitty and Duchess will definitely result in not ending up together. This being the way they lie to each other and how they are insecure about what is going on in their real lives. The story begins as they dance and chat away.
2.The story took place in Ireland during the civil war. The author says that Dublin, the main character was completely surrounded in darkness in a sense that he was hiding, then talks about how he was too excited to eat it explains the anxious mood of the character. In the setting he hears guns , which also contributes to the excitement and uneasy feeling in the story.
