Sergeant Mom
	Mabel Beasley, the Mother of Norma Jean, in Bobbie Ann Mason’s "Shiloh", has all the characteristics of a Marine Drill Sergeant. A Drill Sergeant will inspect living areas for cleanliness, demand everything be in its proper place, maintain strict discipline, and change certain personality or character traits. The Drill Sergeant will force any person, without a strong spirit, to perform acts of defiance against themselves, society, or the object of their tribulations. These Drill Sergeant characteristics are very evident in the way Mabel governed Norma Jean during her adult life.
	Our introduction to Mabel in the story does not resemble the stature of a Drill Sergeant; just the opposite is true: "a short, overweight woman" (666). When Mabel was younger, was thin and good-looking, she would have been a model Sergeant. Now, she is envisioned in a long loose fitting dress. Flower patterns cover the dress from shoulder to ankle. It conceals the bulges overhanging from different parts of her body, as the years have added the extra pounds. The dress is divided in the middle with a white belt and gold buckle. This is the kind of belt and buckle Drill Sergeant Mabel would wear during her inspection of Norma Jean’s house: "she inspects the closets and then the plants, informing Norma Jean when a plant is droopy or yellow. Once Janie was an older woman in her forties she finally found the love of her life Tea Cakes. Tea Cakes soon became her third husband and has no comparison with the other two marriages. While married to Tea cakes Janie wore whatever she wanted because he was not controlling over her like in either of her other two marriages. Janie usually would wear overalls like Tea Cakes symbolizing how free and not under control she was. ?They don?t need to worry about me and my overhalls long as Ah still got nine hundred dollars in de bank. Tea Cake got me into wearing?
During the early 1920s the Great Depression took place. The Great Depression affected many people's lives. The immigrants caught the worst of it. They had just come from another country and were trying to start their new lives when the depression hit. They had to struggle once more with poverty and desperation in taking care of their families, the main reason they had left their old countries was to escape the same epidemic that was now overtaking ?the land of the free?. Immigrants, such as the Jewish immigrants, had to live in poverty-stricken ghettos without the necessities they needed to live healthy lives. The 1920s was the time of rapid change, it was the time of risque fashion, it was the time of which that if you were rich and had all the latest fashions then you were ?in? but if you did not then you were an outcast.
Throughout the book, readers are able to see Scout as being a tomboyish, little girl. For example, Aunt Alexandra does not approve of the way that Scout has been dressing. “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subjects of my attire… She said I wasn’t suppose to be doing things that required pants” (108). Aunt Alexandra seems to feel that a girl Scout’s age should not be wearing pants and overalls, but she should be wearing a dress. Aunt Alexandra also thinks that Scout should be staying inside doing woman like activities instead of playing outside with her brother and Dill. Billy was not dressed as a soldier should be, lacking a helmet, an overcoat, a weapon, and boots. In fact, “He didn’t look like a soldier at all. He looked like a filthy flamingo” (33). Much like other children sent into the war, Billy was not prepared for what he would face. To other soldiers he seems laughable, a joke on the face of the entire army, but all other soldiers are as unprepared as Billy. Billy’s comical appearance acts as a symbol of his placement in the war; in other words, a scrawny, unprepared soldier is absurd during wartime.
In the short story "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, she expresses a theme stating that taking life for granted causes individuals to lose sight of what is important and how people become blinded by everyone and everything around them. Emotions take a big toll on the way a person handles a situation and people do not necessarily compartmentalize in order to make the right decision with ease. There are various characters represented throughout the story ranging from dynamic to round characters. Norma Jean and Leroy Moffitt are the antagonist and protagonist, both of them are at war with each other. Situational irony occurs when Leroy arrives home and continues to stay home after being involved in a truck accident at work. Norma Jean is not used to her husband being home now and would rather have him on the road again. He is excited to settle down with his wife but she wants him gone. She was comfortable with staying at home alone and now that he is there all the time, her freedom is disturbed. The tone the author entails is complicated, harsh, selfish, and straightforward simply for the matter that their marriage lacks communication which makes any relationship complicated. Straightforward is another tone being described because at the end Norma Jean bluntly tells Leroy that she is leaving him. It is very crucial to his ears and harsh coming from her after sixteen years of marriage. The story takes place in the couple's home, super plaza, and the battleground of Shiloh. In the story the reader is able to foreshadow the outcome as a result of Norma Jean's behavior. Bobbie Ann Mason’s family faced the challenges of most southern families needing to adapt to changing times and cultures. Mason’s mom was able to adapt to the new idea of women’s role by leave the farm and working for a factory while maintaing her role as a caring mother and housewife. With new forms of entertainment and ideas by popular culture her family was able to stay in touch with changing times. And even though she left home for the big cities like a lot of people Bobbie Ann Mason never forgot her where she came from and her family.
Clothing in general is an important symbol for rebellion in “A & P”. But, in the girls’ case, they are rebelling by ignoring the unwritten rule of wearing clothes and shoes in stores. “…The women generally put on a shirt or shorts or something before they get out of the car into the street” (193). To Sammy, the bikinis represent freedom because the girls seem to be free of the rules that society forces on everyone—the girls are independent. Although the bikinis represent freedom to Sammy, to Lengel, the girls’ clothing, or lack thereof, represents disobedience. ““We want you decently dressed when you come in here”” (194). The girls are not conforming to the store’s dress code. Sammy’s own clothing becomes symbolic when he quits at the end of the story. “I pull the bow at the back of my apron and start shrugging it off my shoulders… I fold the apron, “Sammy” stitched in red on the pocket, and out it on the counter, and drop the bow tie on top of it. ...she describes the pompous women. The author uses the women's conversations to emphasize the reasons Scout remains a tomboy and refuses the traits of Maycomb females.
The setting in the short story “Shiloh” by Bobbie Ann Mason works well to accentuate the theme of the story. The theme portrayed by Mason is that most people change along with their environment, with the exception of the few who are unwilling to adapt making it difficult for things such as marriage to work out successfully. These difficulties are apparent in Norma Jean and Leroy’s marriage. As Norma Jean advances herself, their marriage ultimately collapses due to Leroy’s unwillingness to adapt with her and the changing environment.
Aunt Alexandra is a negative influence on Jem and Scout. She is a refined lady with great knowledge about good conduct, and tries to impose this especially on Scout in ways that are unsuccessful and even hazardous to her growth and self esteem. She is strongly opposed to Scout’s attire which consists of overalls and pants, and demands that she act lady-like by changing into a skirt or dress. She is making Scout conform to the ideal vision of a stereotypical girl in the Nineteen-Thirties, which gives Scout a message that her individuality is unacceptable.
We all have gone through troubling times in our life. We have all experienced pain and loss one way or another. The Holocaust was a completely different kind of horror, and Adolf Hitler was the sole cause of World War II and the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a terrible time for the Jewish people of Germany. Hitler had two plans for Germany, the camp life was traumatizing and the aftermath of the Holocaust left Germany both physically and mentally broken.
Leroy and Norma Jean in the short story, “Shiloh” by Bobbie Ann Mason, are a married couple, and they experience a series of events, which shapes them and determines there future. The final setting, Shiloh, works well to highlight the battles of war to the battles between Norma Jean and Leroy. Throughout the story Mason is focused on the persistency of grief, the instability of gender roles, along with the distance and lack of communication separating Leroy and Norma Jean from each other. Mason illustrates how marriage can be a struggle striving to work out to the very end.
The idea that a woman must be proper shows the historically accurate gender role that existed in the 1930’s. A woman had to wear a dress or she wasn’t considered a proper woman. Stephanie Crawford communicates with Scout and states”…you won’t get very far until you start wearing dresses more often” (Lee 196). Stephanie provides the argument that women must wear dresses to follow proper etiquette. Not only was wearing dresses was important, but careers played an immense part of the gender role, where men went to work and women stayed home. The thought of a woman not being in the house and providing a day’s meal was frowned upon. Atticus, whom is an exceptional gentleman, states, “…Mrs. Maudie can’t serve on a jury because she is a woman” (Lee 188). Through Atticus’s statement, Harper Lee reveals that women did not obtain as many privileges as men
Mrs. Turner is a sight; however, Carol Shields portrays her as a sight that others don’t want to look at. She is often seen in clothing that disgusts the neighbors and the teenagers walking home when she is in her yard doing yard work. Clothing that is not suited for an elderly lady to be wearing. Mrs. Turner is described to be wearing “ancient pair of shorts… halter top… wedges… crepe-soled sandals… covers her red-gray frizz with Gord’s old golf cap.” Her articles of clothing are old fashioned and she is unkept in social standards. She doesn’t want to buy new clothing, as she is content with her way of living. Mrs. Turner wears Gord’s ten-year-old golf cap even though he passed away from a Seizure because she wants to remember him for the aspects that he had. She repels the teenagers and
